Default Calling all Ranger / Monks

Hi, all. I used to have a level 14 R/Me but I decided that I want to protect some of the party members that I usually hang out with, so I deleted him and made a R/Mo.

I was wondering if anyone who has this same class could come in and post some tips on how to fight effectively and how to keep your party members protected all at the same time.

I know that the Ranger has low energy and energy recharge rates, so I've gathered a bit of information from reading a few posts and decided that I wanted to spend most of my Monk attribute points into Protection Prayers. What I need help in, though, is how to use the protection prayers and my Ranger skills effectively. Does anyone have any tactics that they use before going out to battle with a party? Certain enchantments to use on a tank / pet? Should I stay back, do damage, and heal? Or should I be in the middle with the tank as well? Any tips or strategies will help me out tons and I'd definitely appreciate it.

I'm also looking for some PvP tips too. I managed to find a build somewhere that was similar to the R/Me build I had which someone made for PvP, but, I'd love to incorporate some Monk skills into instead, for obvious reasons. I don't PvP much, but I'm starting to at the Ascalon Academy to get the hang of it. The primary goal I want is to be a support role but to do my fair share of damage to a target as well (both PvE and PvP).

Thanks in advance!

If you primarily want to be support, id suggest rerolling, and going Mo/R... See rangers can spam their skills, but thats because of expertise. The Mo skills cost 10+ energy, so you can cast 2 spells, maybe 3, then need to regen. It takes too long, and you can't be a successful support monk with that. So if you reroll, you can get the monk energy amount, and still spam ranger skills and deal decent dmg.

or you could go with a "**** the torpedoes" approach and go smiting... take judge's insight and suddenly all your attacks have 20% armor penetration and own undead in t3h face. If you're not worried about mana you can also take strength of honor and put it on your pet - afaik, that will work too and make them a bit more effective in combat.

I rarely take anything other than Rebirth. I use Penetrating, Power Shot, Barrage, Distracting, Apply Poison and some traps.

i have an r/mo. i tried using marks, expertise, and protection. the protection ate my energy down way too fast so i switched to wilderness and just had the monk secondary for a re-usable res.

Last night we didn't have a primary monk for our party going through the Cursed Lands to get to Temple of Ages, and got owned pretty hard with a few Warrior/Monks who couldn't fight AND heal at the same time due to lack of energy. I re-adjusted my attribute points and took away from Wilderness Survival and Beast Mastery and bumped up my Healing to about 7 or 8.

I did a good job of keeping everyone alive, but in order to do so, I had to bring Troll Unguent for myself, Heal Other for spot healing on party members, Mend Ailment to get rid of poison, Restore Life, Dwayna's Kiss, and Healing Breeze. I only had Power Shot and I think something else as far as offensive skills. I have druids armor, and +5 energy on one of my bows, so I had 36 energy to work with. I couldn't cast enchantments because I needed every last bit of energy regen to keep the healing going. When we got to Temple of Ages, I switched to some +15 energy focus item I found and switched some other stuff around to get 49 energy, but as I couldn't hold a bow, I couldn't really attack. I swapped back for the bow with the weapons hotkeys when the party wasn't in too much danger, and joined the fight.

Healing/protecting the party seems to be a full time job. From that experience, it would be hard for me to wade into the midst of battle. Casting a few protection skills might be different, but ordinarily I just bring Live Vicariously, Healing Breeze, and Restore Life from my Monk skill lineup if I'm primarily doing ranged attacks. Haven't gotten many trap skills yet.

I like to switch about quite a bit, even though i'm 2ndary monk, I currently use wilderness survival as my main attribute, +10 health regent with troll unguent at 15 wilderness is pretty damn good, along with some traps, makes you an effective trapper, only monks skills I take is rez and sometimes judges insight.
