Default Sometimes, it's better to not all hit the same target.

I've run into this a few times where it's religiously practiced to all train on the same target, but I don't believe it's a rule that has to be set in stone. There are times when it needs to be rethought:

When you've got two high-damage Bladed Aatxes bearing down on your party, with the warriors all targeting one and the other makes a beeline for your healers, it is not a good idea.

When that targeted foe is being spam-healed by other foes who should take priority (i.e. monks), it is not a good idea.

When hand-to-hand fighters (warriors) attack a target at a distance in such a way that it pulls them into aggro range of other enemies, it is not a good idea.

When that target is standing within the center of an enemy's AoE spell, it is not a good idea.

I'm sure that there are more. I just thought I'd share this little tidbit.

Yeah, you're right. I'm usually not the one focusing on the targets, I'm usually the one trying to off-tank the extra mob so they don't squash our healers.

Yeah, especially if there's 2 enemy monk type monsters. If you focus on one the other will use spells like Words of Healing or Heal other, making killing a pain. However, if you have one warrior/mesmer disrupt one monk and put pressure on it to heal itself, then the rest of the team can easily destroy the other one.

Usually in PvE I'll focus in on one mob with the rest of the group but if I see one going after the healers/casters I'll try to attack that monster.

While calling and focusing is good, there are a few times when you don't want to do what everyone else does.

I've found that splitting up can work wonders in 4v4 as well. If you end up with a lot of warriors on one team, make sure every enemy caster is being chased by a warrior and they can be taken down in no time.

Not allways focusing on one target is the advanced lesson to be learnt _after_ "attack the ####ing called target and not one target each".

And for damage attacks, attack the same target mostly holds true.

Condition/shut down rangers, mesmers and necros should know better than to waste all energy on one target.

This is where Guild Wars becomes more than Damage vs. Tanking, and seems to be a very advanced lesson for some. What should happen is that your damage dealers do all target one enemy, but that your support casters (you do have support casters, right?) counter the offensive potential of the others.

In the example of 2 Bladed Aatxes, one should be killed, whilst the other is slowed, blinded and weakened.

So yes, you should train all your damage on one target, but there's more to life than damage.

I almos hate to bump this thread as it is a fairly advanced lesson, and should only be done after most ppl at least pay attention to called targets.

I think the best way to resolve this is to leave a W or E in the back "line" near the Monk so that the other mobs that rush around the "called" target at least face some challenge aside from a fleeing weak dying monk.

I can agree with that. But for an example I find when playing as an elementalist.

A group of enemies attack your party and you have elementalists or other characters with elementalist secondary skills. Its a waste of energy and poor stratagy to have every elementalist cast meteor or firestorm on the same enemy. At least for me anyway, Meteor will kill lv15 enemies in 3-4 hits right now. But often enough you will see either the enemy drop dead before my cast is complete and my meteors land on empty ground. Or I'll kill the enemy and then down come a cast of firestorm from someone else.

What I like to do in group battle is TAB through the enemies attacking, quickly pick out which one is not being attacked and hit it instead. Oh and yes, protect the MONK!

This is exactly what I do as a nec/ele...

Let the tanks go after one guy then i sit back and slow down and health degen everyone else so by the time the tanks have killed the first guy the next 2-3-4 guys are slower, weaker and loosing -6 health every second. works good

This is where the lesson becomes that the forums cant tell you how to win battles, only your perception in combat and your usage of your abilities determine what you do.

Its fair enough to have a plan, but its a bad plan that cannot be altered, and sometimes the experiance and some the times the creativity of a player(s) is what determines the outcome.

Anyway the team that goes into battle with its eyes firmly on the monk and that sees nothing else is surely the team that is going to be be getting kicked out first.
