Default Strange Damage Spikes

Ok, this is no complaint, but a question.
The last two days in the PVP Areas have been somewhat frustrating and left a feeling of heavy cheating involved. But i am not here to accuse anyone of that, i just want to know if there is a way to achieve those damage values some people were doing with legit means.

Some examples i am speaking of:
Once my mesmer was unloading Spells onto a monk the other partys mesmer deciced to do the same to me. First came a backfire Spell, followed by some health degen spells (Conjure Phantasm, Migraine). As all it would have taken me to kill and finish of the monk was a single Energy Surge i deciced to push the limits a bit and cast it on him. I had a healthy 421 Hitpoints left and a Backfire would deal a maximum of 147 Damage.
The monk went down, but so did i. Backfire kicked in and damaged me for around 270 Damage. And while i was like "wtf?" the other mesmer kicked in a Shatter Delussions and finished me of with another 170 damage straight.

So how is this possible, using only backfire, Shatter Delusions and a few (not much) Health Degen Spells? And i did not mislook the Damage Values flowing around my screen.

Next example.
A *cough* fair *cough* battle in Tombs. We faced a korean team mainly consisting of warriors. They only had one Elementarist but that one Ele did insanely huge damage. To be exact he took down 4 party members in 4 Seconds. And i caught one of his spells he was spamming like they had no cooldown time. It tid 389 Damage to me. Funny about that fact was i had Mantra Of Lightning on me, as well as a protective spirit (which did not get dispelled).
So how do you bypass protective spirit and mantra of lightning and still do 389 Damage?

Next example.
Fed up by that i went into the team arenas and fought a bit. All was fine until we met a team with some ranger in it. First we all were puzzled as that ranger totally left his team behind like he was 33 % faster. All the time. I know you can do that a short time, but he was all the time.
So that ranger engaged us from BELOW. He shot an arrow at us and BAM... 152 Damage... another arrow with AOE Damage... BAM ... 121 Damage + a lot of damage from explosive arrows. He shot a third arrow and our whole team was nearly dead if not for our great monk. And then he came up for us... bam... 212 Damage.

So, how... the **** are those guys doing that much damage?
Its just a few examples i experienced lately. I could just keep up with those experiences... hammer warriors with 300 damage, Necros with instant kill spells and the like...
They are rare but tend to become more common each fight.

Something that's not really like that that's been happening to me is in the tombs.

Whenever I run about 30ft away from our priest area, I sometimes randomly die. No matter how much health I have, and it's not all the time. It's like there's a trip wire there that leads to a self destruct button. No skill damages me, no text or numbers pop up, I just randomly die in the tombs every so often (I'd say about 3 times in about 10 rounds), it's really odd.

Anyone else encountered this? Is it a bug maybe I should try and report? (Thought I don't know how I would, it's usually in different places, I just...die.)

389 dmg with mantra of lightning on? AND protective spirit? You were either really, really drunk, or something is very, very wrong. Take a screenshot next time and email it to ANet, I'm still having a hard time believing these numbers. Nothing similar has ever happened to me.

The Mesmer one doesn't seem that far out if they had 16 Domination Magic, but the others are just absurd. I would like to know the tricks here too.

I doubt the 389 damage was capable. Either you're getting chained alot at the same time or theres exxaggeration involved. It's not achievable by legit/regular means, and it's not common enough for someone to be cheating. The first thing you need to do is take a pic and try this again, ask them how are they doing it. I haven't seen this yet and I don't expect to see it anytime soon.

For the ranger dealing high damage, ive seen hunter's shot hit my warrior for in the 70s. Normal hits were around 40 though, penetrating shot hurts some too. I dont know about going beyond 100, but with a sundering string, judge's insight, and things like hunter's and penetrating could stack up for alot of penetration value ramping up the damage. It would be sorta like taking your lv20 character back to old ascalon to "play" with the char id imagine. The running fast thing all the time could easily have been storm chaser and escape used in an alternating fashion.

The massive damage numbers you are quoting, i have no clue as to how it would happen from spells. I have had many instances though, while in pvp where my character would just fall over dead even though i had 80-100 hp and no enemies in range and the only thing that was eating me would be 1-2 dot effects.

Theres more spells and combinations out there that you can time much better than just "air spike groups"

MUCH MORE!
MUCH BETTER!

Shatter delusions only needs some low-atributed hexes that break self automatically in almost no-time. (1 shatter delusions + 4 hexes that last 1 second max)

for all the other examples all i have to say is, READ THE NECRO SPELLS!

you "noobs" just got owned by the most underrated class.

Hmmm... dunno about that ranger damage, if he's using ignite he's using a different build than I am though. My ranger build can usually drop any soft (non-warrior) target in about 7 seconds, so huge damage is possible. Not 200 per shot though...

I think another thing is that you should consider your own armor level... although that protective spirit thing sounds rather odd... if it is on, there aren't anything that can do more than 10% of your hp in 1 hit no matter what.

The ranger thing don't sound anything too out of ordinary. Considering the couple buff like judge insight + order of pain etc along with barrage with a proper bow for the build.

The mesemer is also quite easily done...

4 people in 4 sec sounds like exaggerating... however, was that 389 damage in 1 hit? or from multiple sources...? if you added 3-4 numbers together to get 389, it is quite easily to do... but about by passing protective spirit... that I can't say as I am not there to see this "chaotic" situation.

As a Monk, I'll tell you that I very often have party members complaining about dying randomly. The cause? Vengeance or Unyielding Aura.

Sorry the dead necro on the ground wasnt exploding the hexes that were about to wear off. As for the first guy though, shatter deliusions (mesmer hexes only) is very possible.

As for the "fall over dead syndrome" there are several explainations. If you've got Fertile Season and either you run away from the effects or it dies, you'll immediately lose the HP you gained from it, sometimes killing you outright. The same goes for Symbiosis. If you've got a bunch of extra HP from enchants and either the enchants go down or Symbiosis goes down you'll just hit the dirt immediatly, sometimes losing hundreds of HP at a time, but with no damage numbers coming up.

I doubt in the validity of those numbers. If someone could deal a 389 spike you would get a cute little balance warning which would say something like ''Balance warning: you have taken X amount in Y time, reference skill Z''. If you haven't seen a balance warning then perhaps you should check the armor you're wearing. If you're on an RP character and you still have 40 AL then yes anything will spike you like mad. Anything like Earthquake+Aftershock will deal you a net 148+248. I've spent alot of time in tombs, both in PUGs and with our guild as well as little too much time in arenas and I've never seen anything close to what you're claiming. There are powerful spikes out there but nothing nearly as close as a 270 backfire (on a lvl 16 it can only deal maximum 147 btw). It would also help us if you'd give us what the el was using to deal this damage.

I've seen something like what happened to the op, but it was in GvG. It happened to us twice. This guild immediately ran to ninja our guild lord, and even with a monk back there the second time, and a lot of protection, they almost instantly brought our lord down to half health, and then dropped the rest of it. All of this in less than three seconds. From what i've heard, there is an exploit with mes skills and ele skills that will let you do that. The thing is, both times it happened too fast for us to figure out what they were doing. If any of you ever come up against a guild calledthe Pank Flamingoes (i think), I would suggest you stay back by your Lord, cause, they go for him immediately.

Default I've Seen it.

Have yo ever Seen a Warrior with the necro Hes Weaken Armor on him? Then he Tries to use Healin Signet. In the Scenario i Saw( it was in tombs btw), There was one warrior sitting next to a monk. And me as an air ele with 16 air magic attributes. I hit him with chain lightning. It hit him for around 250 damage, bounced to the monk, hit him for 110, then reverberated back to the warrior for another 250. he dropped instantly. It Is rare, but i've witnessed it happening.

Grenth's Balance can do 300+ damage if you use it right.

Yea, I've never seen chain lightning go back to the first target. Also, I am an Air Elementalist and the most I can ever spike is around 190-220 (3 spells) and thats on a caster. 398..... maybe you just got hit by a 39 dmg and 98 dmg attack and you misread it as 398.
