Default Need some basic strategies for GvG

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to read my post. I'm an officer in the Evil Avatar guild, which comes from www.evilavatar.com, an excellent gaming-news site. Our guild is mostly filled with people who have work and/or a family so are casual gamers. Back when the game just came out, we were around rank 300 in guilds but that dropped all the way to 1400 after we stopped GvGing. I've decided to bring us back and last weekend we won two GvGs taking us to around 1000. The task of making a good team has mostly fallen to me. I don't know everything about how a good team should work so thats why I'm asking for help from you guys. Heres what I've thought of so far.

2 Healer Monks, 1 Protection Monk
1 Mesmer
2 Air Eles
1 Ranger/Nec
1 Hammer Warrior

I'm trying to make a balanced team in terms of offense and defense that would be able to deal with most situations and other team builds. We don't really have enough hardcore people to have a team of 8 necs, mesmers, or rangers. We do have teamspeak, and last time we just ran to the flag tower, held it until we got the morale and then attacked their guild lord.

In a battle of 8vs8, my biggest question is who should be targeted first and whether we should ALL be focusing on one target or not. Monks seem to be targeted first commonly but assuming their team also has 3 monks, it would take quite a while. I think that mesmers are also high priorities because they can shutdown our monks. However, I've heard people say that attacking only one target makes it very easy for enemy monks to keep him healed and protected. That means we would have to switch around or attack two target simultaniously.

So if anyone has ideas about how to improve our team build or how targetting should go, please post here. Thanks.

It isn't so much about what classes you have but how you use them. You need to be aware of what attacks you're probably going to run into. Make sure you have enough defense to live through it. You need to be aware of what defenses you're going to run into. Make sure you have enough offense to punch through it. That will get you up to rank 200-300.

After that it gets complicated, positioning, target calling, and when to go where and do what is the difference between rank 200 and rank 100. When you are ok at the nuances is when you'll hit 100.

Above rank 100 you not only need to have a good offense or a good defense, you need to have a build setup that is going to give you at worst an even chance against ANY enemy you run into. Builds like that can be put together if you sit down and spend some time discussing it. By the time you're up to rank 100 you'll probably have it figured out (it also helps that you will have probably played a lot of great builds by then and if you're observant you'll see what they do).

We've beaten teams in the top 100 with 1 Monk on our team before. Somebody somewhere said, 'The best defense is a great offense.'. We've also lost to stuff we'd never thought we could lose to or never thought we'd see because we've gotten out of position and the tide of a battle can turn at the drop of one key player (you try to not make 1 key player in your build, but depending on what you run into a player may be key against their build).

If you run into us in GvG and try to analyze 'What were they thinking when they came up with that build?'. We weren't. We "grab 8 and go". We allow everyone in the guild to participate in GvG. We try to bring balanced teams that will have a good chance but if you focus on your strengths and learn to think outside of the box you can win a lot more than you lose.
