That is not how people see it. A lot of people in GW think like this.
Monk = Healer ONLY
If they die it is SPECIFICALLY because the Monk didn't do their job of healing them. It doesn't matter that there are other people on the team. It doesn't matter that a lot of times their own actions cause their deaths. It doesn't matter that monks have a very small and very limited energy supply. "THEY" died. That is all that matters.

On a side note I am seeing now why my GF plays my monk character. She plays very late at night (she's a bartender so has late hours) and when I hopped on last night during that time slot it was amazing! ADULTS ONLINE! Honest and true ADULTS! I might actually pick up playing my Monk character more because though there are still rude adults...70% of the crap is non-existant at certain late hours.

But give me time with that. Playing at the "kiddie hours" really burned me out on playing a monk...

I have actually started the game over as a Mesmer/Ranger. As a monk I kept getting my but kick in PvP. So, I decided to go with a Me/R called Monk Killa. Speaking of good teams I find it very hard to fond a good PvP team. I say call target, kill their monk first. yet they don't call, each person atacks a diferent target and it generally suck.

It's best for tanks to call. I'm just making it to Post Searing with my Mesmer so most of those people are newbs. Cool thing is that I've already got some high powered weapons from storage by my Monk. I'll use my Smite monk to farm for cool weapons and cash and let my Mesmer benefit from that.

Yes
It is just that I see this game as fun. At least in PvE it's just pure fun for me. In PvP I'm a bit more serious of course.

Last time I did a mission with a PUG my girlfriend watched me play and it was so much fun. I played an E/R in a team of only Warriors. There was one particular Warrior that I've met in an other mission before and I knew he would die. I told it my GF and she kept watching him. Every now and then he died, it was so much fun. Allthough if I had played a monk, it would have been more stressfull... But hey, I'd let him die if I need to heal the others. If he'd insulted me, I'd much more fun Because I see insulting other people as a sign of own failure. If someone dies, it's in my opinion his own failure. I'm, as a monk, a helper. I can help them keep to themselves alive, but I can't do it on my own. Allthough I can keep one guy alive no matter what damage he takes - it is not possible for 2 or more people.

When I'm playing a non monk char - I play the way, that needs the least healing. For example I did the "To Kryta" Quest with a monk in the team (my first time with healing-monk(!) in my team), I was an E/R. The monk hardly healed me - but he did it everytime I got into troubles. Maybe I would have surrvived without him, but he helped me greatly by just a few heals (because they were at exactly the right time).

That's the way I try to play my monk and that is what I expect from other monks.

One of my friends is a W/Mo - he hardly ever needs healing, he balanced his builds very good. It is sometimes really funny to see a W/* lvl17's health bar drop much faster than my friend's W/Mo lvl14 or so

I'm not as dediacted as EinValentine - so he'll be much better monk than me.
But I try my best and I do know that one second can make a difference for a monk. So I stay as focused as possible. But every now and then I sip a drink or eat something, etc. So I don't see it as work, but as dedicated playing.

A few of my grievences with people to add to the list: -

- Only Warriors should tank, everyone else stay back makes things much easier.

- When I say "My energy is 4 of 50" it means i need a rest to recharge, not run as fast as you can into the largest group possible.

- When you get a group of 8 you need atleast 2 monks, I refuse to join a group with only myself as a primary healer because i know i cant keep everyone alive and i'm not prepared to take abuse from people when they die.

- Do not say "the monk is crap" if you die (especially if you are an not a warrior and insist on tanking) I will stop healing and rezzing you.

I think thats it for now, more later probably

I'm jsut posting to say that my first character to 20 was/is a summoning necro... they need healers, too.... in fact that's why I made my monk. I play a monk, because I feel that I am most effective and contribute the most by healing. I enjoy it, it is what I consider to be fun =D My groups are generally happy when I heal them, and I really do appreciate when they compliment or notice the healer in the back =P

Sometimes I do run across "those" monks... the ones that think the world owes them something. I even saw one monk trying to CHARGE to join a group. Well that is just silly, and they deserve to be on an ignore list. Try to find a monk that likes thier job, they are surely better at it

P.S. Monks, don't forget to thank those tanks that do a good job of blocking enemies and keeping you aliev... it works both ways =D

It's about the whole group. Everyone must do their jobs. When everone does his job then you WILL win. If one person screws up you WILL die.

I created a necro/warrior thinking that having the little warrior traits would allow me to tank on mobs with phys. attacks and then steal their health when i got low. After reading all these threads Ive learned that the character I created is actually more of a drain on a team than a help. I had not realized the amount of work a monk had to go through because they would think i was dying while in the midst of battle and heal me as I myself was using blood magic, or thinking i was fine just to watch my artificial health vanish and for me to take one of those permanent naps. Yesterday I revamped my character and pretty much dropped all warrior skills and focused entirely on the strengths of Necromancers. The next mission I went on we had a low lvl monk and two warrior secondaries and this time i stayed in the back with the monk and used my distance spells and sent my minions to block any mobs that came our way. The results was this, the monk kept everyone healed(partially because i took little damage that i didnt regen myself) and we went through the clusters of enemies much faster because the warriors didnt have to worry about dying and the monk remained protected and able to heal. Moral of the story: Monks can only do so much, but the quality of job a monk does is more influenced by the party than by their own personal skill. At the end of the mission everyone was alive and appreciative for each persons abilities. Thanks monks.... you showed me the light

Bless this wonderful thread! Ive only gotten thanks once for keeping a rather ambitious group alive in thirsty river. They liked to just run ahead and see what happened. They almost died a number of times, but they said sorry to me and let me recharge. I was the only monk primary at the time. At the end, they all said thanks, it was the happiest day of my monk life.

Also, I did a run on Elonas again to help a guildie ascend. Now, they decided to aggro the first 3 mobs we came across, and an ele thought he should go and tank. Well needless to say I had some healing to do, and I was getting kind of aggrivated because of our ranger aggroing everything. So once we finished the battle, and were all still alive I flashed my energy, 0 of 49 or something....And people kept running. I then asked to wait, but no one stopped. So they aggroed some more. And with half energy i got tapped pretty quick. A Wa and an ele died, so while I was resing I asked , rather snidely and totally out of my personality "what happenes when the monk has no energy?"...then, a total stranger to me, responded with "we die." Everyone proceeded to stop and wait for me to recharge. I wanted to hug that guy, real hard. One guy even apologized for charging ahead without waiting for the casters. I realize that I may not be the best tactician, but I am a pretty good leader. We then finished the rest of the mission, no problem.

My moral, please be nice to the monks, if a monk says he has no energy, that mean no healing for you. A kind word will more times than not, make a monks day. A simple thanks, or good job goes a long way. So be nice to monks...........before we all form a cult and take over all of the GW universe

I'm starting to wonder if you have Ascended putting out misinformation like this. It's pretty obvious you don't understand the mechanics of the AI Mirror. A monk can beat the mirror with 1 spell and it's not even a damage spell. Quit telling monks they can only ascend with Smite, it's false.

Thank you Giroml. Way to tell him. :P
There are countless ways to ascend. I'm not going to go into detail here, since this isn't the sort of thread to say it, and there are countless numbers of threads that tell you exactly what to do, but basically, all I'm saying, is don't be so retarded in thinking that what you think is the absolute truth and anybody who disagrees is a complete "noob".... Just because you havn't tought about it doesn't mean nobody will.

And funbun, just to let you know, 7 out of 8 people can still go through a mission. you don't absolutely NEED all 8 people. have you ever even been to FoW or UW? when somebody quits or disconnects, do you just leave right away? on countless occasions i've cleared FoW with only 5 people! it can work! and also, I've won the HOH many times with dropped people(not replaced by henchies) actually dropped mid battle. you can do it.. please don't make such blanket statements like that.. and it seems from reading your previous posts that you like to do that alot.

P.S. *cough* can you say divine boon? *cough*

How fast did you beat you mirrror with that one spell? My fastest time was 35 seconds flat. Did yoiu beat your monk with your one spell in 35 seconds flat?

I've completed many missions with only 6 out of 8 peopl or 5 out of 8. BUT EVERYONE STILL HAS TO TO THEIR JOBS!!!!! IF NO ONE DOES THEIR JOB THEN THE GROUP WILL DIE NO MATTER HOW MANY PEOPLE STAY IN THE MISSION!!!!!!

Underworld? I'm a monk. I can solo the Underworld.

This thread ended 2 FREAKING months ago. You don't think I've learned anything new in the past 2 months? Different ways to play. Different characters and such.

This is an old thread and you dig it up. Did you just join forums aor something? Why are you digging up old stuff? Geeezz.

I don't remember you saying anything about time constraints in your original claim, you said twice that no monk could ascend without smiting, this is a false claim and I want to make sure other up and coming monks don't take what you said as gospel and find themselves pigeonholed into Smiting. A monk can ascend with a single spell. (not just one either, there are multiple single spells)

Just want others to think outside the box and stop stepping into this mold they think they must to compete or have fun in this game. I'm pretty sure ANet meant for people to try out many fascinating and fun combos and not all go the 55/105 Monk Smiting route, let's encourage people to be different not all the same.

You obviously missed post #130 where I tried to clarify my original statement.

It's not like this is the only post on about beating your monk mirror. There are many other threads on the subject. Of which you can easily find by using the SEARCH button.

Thinking outside the box? What do you think I was doing? At the time that was written most monks were nothing but heal-bots. Back then telling a monk to use smite prayers WAS thinking outside the box. Back then past ascension it was all 90% warriors. You couldn't find monks back then. Most monks couldn't figure out how beat thier mirror.

I was wrong. There are other ways to beat your mirror without smite prayers. I realize that after 2 MONTHS of additional game play. 2 MONTHS MAN.

This is an old thread. I have learned new things. 2 months is a long time in the gaming world. Thanks for asking if my views have changed in that 2 months

Dude, just lighten up we are not talking about a cure for cancer here.

Ive been wondering before why there are monks that will just drop of the game when someone from the group dies. Now after playing a monk for a while (he's at Lion's Arch), I have an idea why.

- Too many players who think they are invincible and will just charge to anything. This is not just for warriors or elementalists. Even monks do this.

- Many players who thinks that by having a level 20 character, they already qualify as experts in the game. Same as with players who claim to have finished the game.

Im not saying that dropping out of the game is good. I'm also definitely not advocating it. But if the group is just downright not listening to suggestions and tactics, not paying attention to the map or to the healthbars/energy reserves of the others, I'd probably save myself the trouble of getting really pissed and annoyed and just leave the group myself.

After I have completed the borlis mission (a warrior decided he doesnt want to fight to just show that we need him, an elementalist who kept on arguing with said warrior to give him the torch, and both of them not fighting/helping the group in the process), I had this as parting message:

A game is something to be enjoyed not just by yourself, but also by others you are playing with. So don't be an idiot!

I would like to preface this by saying I haven't read very much of the forum. I haven't been on GwG for probably 5 days (can't remeber excactly). I plan on reading the forum in its entirety soon, but atm I don't have time. So, if this has already been discussed, please excuse me.

A second thing I would like to say before I get to the point is that I have played monk since day 1 and have expierience out the ass.

You say that you have a list of people that if you are in a party with you will neither heal nor rez. This is not only childish, this is also hurtful to the rest of your party. Even if that person is a complete asswipe, getting through a mission like Thunderhead Keep, you need as much help as you can get. If the Murrsaat (sp?) have already gotten to the king than its pretty much gg there. The team should be able to defend in a manner that prevents all but few (not at the same time) from getting to the king. Remeber, this is coming from someone who has done this mission prolly 5 times as a monk (helpin friends).

Again, I appologize if this has already been said.
