Unhappy Necro solo'n PvE and 2ndary suggestions

Been playing for awhile (mainly r/w and w/e) but wanted to give the necro a try; I have an aversion to w/mo and mo/X for farming high-end, so I'm hoping that the proper necro build will let me handle that area with better flavor(underworld might be a faint hope, but it's there; and I don't think either of my current mains are capable of that).

I'm considering, at least at the early stages, a minion build with Mark of Pain + minions for a good damage source (steer me clear if minion damage doesn't trigger...or if minions are just too unfocused to zero in on my hex mark). Wondering if fiends or minions would be better to generate damage; guess it's all a question of necro pets' ability to assist.

On the matter of secondary; I'm thinking possibly war for tactics line, mes or monk(!). Made a bit of use of the search button, but didn't really find the advice I'm looking for on this. Replies and PMs are appreciated!

Er...don't expect any high lvl farming with a minion build, minions get the shit knocked out of them in one or two hits. They don't do much if anything at the higher end PvE levels...unless you splode them with death nova.

One way to solo with a Necro is the Anything/Monk 55hp solo build.
I use it well on my E/Mo, and I'm just starting to use it on my N/Mo too.
I use it to do solo UW smite runs.
The only Necro skill I use there is Offering of Blood to help with energy management.

How's that work without the monk runes to boost the stats? The recent DB nerf not hampering you? PM if you'd rather; that'd pretty much cinch it for me if it's doable.
