Default What's the best method for farming skill points?

My current goal is 100% skill unlock, preferably through PvE. Skills are expensive, but I can make money farming SF, UW or FoW. The bottleneck is really skill points - once you run out and complete every mission, it takes annoyingly long to earn more.

What do you folks recommend as the most efficient way to gain skill points?

The only thing I can think of is killing things at higher levels or go into random arenas and collect some there. If not dome already go and do the SF quests buts it does take awhile to get more skill ponts at level 20 to buy an SOc or another skill.

You are looking at it the wrong way. The fastest way to unlock skills is to start a new PvE char. Do the **skills quest** and missions only. You don't need any gold items. No farming needed.

Going through this will allow you to unlock 90% of the skills for **TWO** classes. Cap elite skills when possible and the rest? Use faction. You should be familiar with the game enough that using the skills you received before Lions Arch is good enough for 90% of the game.

Getting Droknar armor (yes running to Forge) early can help a lot through the missions.

You have four char slots. Use 3 for PvE and the last for PvP until you have unlocked all the things you want.

You can blow through 80% of the game from start to end in a weekend of gaming. Or one week for 2-4 hours a day.

I've done that. I have a R/W, Mo/N, and E/Me, all ascended and having completed every skills quest diligently. I've counted, and after ascension (no more skills quests) I still have ~30 skills left to unlock in each class (including elites). That's a far cry from 90%. My monk, the one I've most recently ascended (still at Droks), has ~50 skills left to get (I'm not at my home PC so I can't check exact numbers) and 22 skill points accumulated. Which means I'm going to need 28k gold and ~560,000xp to complete that char.

28k gold, no problem. 560k xp? That takes a while.

It is 20k xp per skill point, right? I'm not making that up?

If I am not mistaken most skills can be acquired via skills quest. You should have enough to buy the rest of the non elite via trainers.

My first char - w/mo - unlocked all non elite warrior and monk skills with a small handful of exceptions just by questing/mission. Also, I also used that same char to unlock several elemental, ranger and necro skills. It has 640K total of exp.

And I previously articulated I would unlock many elites via faction. Try to cap from random spawns takes up too much time IMO.

Out of the thirty my bet 2/3 are elite skills. 10-15 are non elite. With 6 or so mission left that leaves you 4-9 skill points.

Getting the Ascension XP bonus via fast kill should give you one level up. Do a couple of the easy 'new quest' (defending Droknar) should be another level up. Plus there are couple of easy Furnace quest for a lot of XP.

Add faction (1-5k per hour depending on skill level) that should get you most of the 30 skills left unlocked.

Maybe it is just me, but I never found unlocking skills that time consuming if you create a PvE char to do so and do a little faction farming in arena, HoH or GvG.

I believe it is now 15,000xp needed per level once you get to level 20.

Also, have you done all the quests? Sometimes finishing one quest for an NPC opens up another quest so that could account for missing skills. Use a GW website or GW freaks to find the missing skills.

Run through PvE for the basic skills. For the remaining elite skills & equipment, play as a MONK in PvP Random Arena. =] It'll still take time but you'll more likely to win and earn faction points in CA than in team.

well if you want to get all of the skills through pve, then listen to the people above, but by far the easiest way to quickly gain skills is through gvg. faction is nuts there. tombs works too, but its much faster in gvg.

tombs is nuts for faction if you just throw down the edge bomb. Granted, you WILL piss off everyone there, including possibly your teammates.

If you intend to unlock all your skills thru PvE, your best bet is to use scroll as often as possible. My mesmer just unlocked every single elite and non-elite skills from its primary and secondary profession. Trust me, earning 740k exp as a mesmer isn't the easiest thing in the world, but it's feasible if you know how to beat high level mobs in bunches. I usually gain(pharm) 5000xp every 5 mins and my char would level up every 15 mins.

Yet the troll option seems only feasible to me with a class combination that can kill them easily and quickly enough.
I recently encountered this problem with my Mes/Mo, a combination that I enjoyed, but realised probably one of the harder to unlock due to the sheer number of skills in both professions. (My Ran/Warr on the other hand looks much easier in that respect.) I can't imagine that Mesmer demand in UW or FoW is that high though (but I'd be gladly proved wrong), making any run dependant on avaliablility of friends/guildies.
If only skill points were account based. ;p (I want to save my faction for unlocking weapon upgrades... xD)

The skill quests only give about 60% of all skills. You gain about 45 skill points by gaining 20 levels and doing all missions. So on average you are still missing about 20 skills per profession after spending all your skill points.

Tomb is the best place for gaining faction. GvG match takes too long compare to tombs.

If you are unlocking skills for the purpose of PvP then do not bother with unlocking everything. Simply unlock those skills that look useful and save some skill points for special builds. Use faction only for runes and mods because unlocking them from PvE is completely random.

If you are only interested in the challenge of unlocking all skills, then listen to all the previous posts.
