I thought I would post my experiences as of late as I begin my journey into PVP. I have been playing GW since Public Release but had never tried PVP at all before---until about 2 weeks ago---here is what I have learned:

1) I used my PVE monk (my solo farmer) to switch my secondary professions to each class and then grabbed henchies and capped all Elite skills---I had tons of skill points and gold from farming so this was not difficult to do at all. As far as items and runes go, again, from farming i could afford to buy anything i felt I needed to unlock.

2) Learn a build that is tried and tested in the arenas where you will be playing, reading these forums is a great way to learn some really good builds, and again, just from my PVE experience, I felt most comfortable with my monk, so this is who I played with.

3) This is the most important part---Be HONEST---I would chat in "All" channel "Rank 0...PVP beginner LFG to learn and have fun with, have both TS and Vent"...so ya, I almost forgot, install both Vent and TS, it really does help. By being so honest some people did laugh and make comments, but you know what, I got into some pretty decent groups and even got to the HoH.

Now I know that I did not contribute very much, but I learned tons and to the people I battled with, Thank you so very much, it has been so much fun so far...now to the other side of things, i was playing some 4vs4 TA and I played with someone who posts here quite a bit, who seems to be oh so helpful, well, what a terrible experience, our team lost quite badly and this person said "You guys Suck" and then left, all I can say is I bet this person was a seasoned pro in his very first match---ok rant over, the point is, there are people like this out there but there are also lots of really nice players as well, so don't take it personally when you encounter these immature, ignorant players, just be honest and upfront with your team and don't be afraid to ask questions before or after a match---and most importantly have fun and keep at it---it really is Worth it

Glad that you had a good experience for the most part in your first foray into PvP. Don't take any comments personally and you'll be much better off.

Thank you very much---I had a great first experience, I never take anything personally from a game, however, it is disappointing to see that type of crap since I now believe that PVP is just awesome and that many may not want to put up with that kind of stuff in order to experience this whole other aspect of the game, but, there are some really nice players out there too, so just keep looking---I need a bigger friends list,lol

). Been playing for 7 months now and only got started playing pvp for like 1,5 weeks. What seems to help is getting a build thats really really basic (I picked a shock/gale-warrior). After a while you're beginning to get a feel how groups work and what groups to avoid.

I have been getting a lot of crap from other players, pvp-players are just not nice to eachother, but after u win the first match things are brightening up. My advice is to take a build that you're comfortable with and just lay low for some matches to learn about pvp (that means following targets).

Well, I have to post again since my last try at PVP...this is the problem I have now, I learn very quickly and I now find myself in groups that quite frankly don't seem to have any idea of what their plan is...IF they even have a plan/strategy...so, it now seems I am having some trouble finding a good group, since they always require emote to join, i guess I am now doomed to fame farm slowly one lucky win after another. BTW, I have recently joined a guild that is supposed to be starting some HA, so hopefully this will develop into some for consistent groups. One more thing, i tried IWAY...yes I know it took a nerf and people hate IWAY, but I actually really enjoyed it, and I was on one team that was outstanding and we beat some pretty decent teams with it, then I was on some teams where we were simply terrible, perhaps this is the difference with pre/post update, but I don't think so, I would have thought that an IWAY warrior should never go charging into a trap team...isn't that what your pet is for??? So, for those who say IWAY takes no skill, I do not believe that was EVER the case

I just wanted to clarify something here, please don't take this as whining or complaining, I am just trying to share my experiences in PVP since I am new at it. When I said good teams, what I mean is teams that will not call everyone "nooblets", then quit, I have spent a 3 hour stretch once, getting onto teams who would do this very thing, we never even got to finish 1 match. So for now, IWAY is an alternative where I can gain some map experience and hopefully meet some new friends who PVP. I don't expect or deserve to win HoH, but I do deserve my 22 fame points in a week and a half just on my persistence alone IMO

I took me about 2 months of playing to make it to the hall for the first time, thats pretty sweet you got there in your first few outings. I remember the first time I probably took about 50 screenies

Hi guys, just wanted to report back after last nites HA experience. I was in HA pm-ing all the group leaders I saw asking for ranked IWAY players, asking if I could possibly join, well, one group of ranked players did let me join and what an awesome learning experience it was. Not only did one of the other warriors tell me what to look for when using my skills but the group leader was amazing. Before each match, she would almost instantly tell us which group we were up against and what their strengths and weaknesses were. On our last match before losing, yes we lost, she said we had met a necro spike team that she had played before and that she said soundly destroys IWAY teams. But, rather than just go about the same game plan, she communicated changes to us all and we actually gave it a pretty good go. I know for a fact that I did not contribute much but I am thankful for the chance to learn from some very skilled players, yes they were running IWAY, but they were able to determine their oppenent and make changes on the fly, I think that takes alot of skill, anyways, it was once again a ton of fun.

Nice on getting a good start in PvP. I can remember my first foray into HA. All of the Rank..... I felt so noobish.

I'm also starting at pvp for a few weeks cause i basicly did all pve things for over 3 times.
Collected 2 all the skills in game and the elites needed for most builds.
My experience isn't that very good though... i use my mesmer and it rlly takes a long time to get into a descent group :S
But still I keep learning, but now i'm gonna start at iway cause ppl keep demanding ranks and what i've seen is that there are alot of iway groups...

well gonna try... i'd love 2 hold HoH 1 time

If a part of a community doesn't like you merely because you're a new player trying out a build, then I would say they're not worth associating with anyway. Do you ever see the highest ranked players making posts about how much they hate IWAY? No. They know it and accept it for what it is, and they move on to GvG, but they don't complain because it's useless and immature to do so. Anyways, this argument is moot and the fact that we're having it is just sad and shows the point to which parts of the PvP community has degraded. Thank god for GvG and nice people like wheel.

To apocalypse: If you need someone to help you out and to introduce you to various PvP builds, you can always apply to Xen of Onslaught at www.xoohq.com. We're probably not the best guild out there, but we have over 450 members, and we focus our divisions to help orient players like you and to get you guys into good groups where you can learn to play in tombs and in GvG. Seconded. I spent a while in both OoX and XoO back in the day, and have guested for XoO Ladder since; all great guys. As long as you are willing to learn and improve, it's very much a decent guild to be in.

Also, as Wheel said: Glad that you enjoyed your first venture into PvP, and I hope you continue to do so. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

And for the record, posts have been deleted because I am trying very hard to stop this thread becoming yet another thread about "the evils of IWAY". One a week is about all I can stomach.

I've been having some similar problems with HA, but different enough to warrant a new post (delete me if i'm wrong!

)

I am a night-time supervisor here at work, so I don't get home until around 11pm eastern time, and i've noticed that the quality (and amount, to a lesser extent) of PUG's is not very good during the times when I can play. I have a few friends, and maybe one or two of them do PvP in one form or another. My question:

Am I SOL for finding any friends that run in HA late at night? Should I not bother trying until the weekends?

I've done some international-districting (I invented a new word!) with little to no success, to try and find a group of people or guild that operates during the time that I am online. The few that I have found scoff at my lack of an emote, or are just jerks in general. The more I play it, the more I enjoy PvP, and the more frustrated I get trying to find that niche of players that will "throw me a bone", so to speak, especially during the times that I can play.

Suggestions? Thoughts? Pokes with a sharp stick? Feel free to post or PM, and share your insight.

It's nice to see this post. I have recently been getting into PvP. Probably have been playing random/TA for 3-4 weeks now. I want to try HA but have always been discouraged by "NO NOOBS PLEASE". As much as I don't take offense in video games it still makes me wonder, Will i just get yelled at for being inexperienced?

Hopefully my first run at HA is a good experience and this post makes me feel a little better about there being lots of good people out there willing to help.

just try it! usually the people shouting No NOObs plz arent that great themselves. just join up if they get mad at you dont worry about it. The more you try it the better you will get.

Ascent can be extremely frustrating, trust me I know. I remember the one time when I spent 6 hours in ascent, and came out with no team and no fame. I was about punch a hole through my computer. It took me around 4 month to grind out my first 180 fame, and it was not easy, since I don't like to play iway. (Especially since my loyalty to my RL friend prevents me from leaving the guild... and my sound was messed up so I couldn't run TS or Vent)

Always keep an open mind, and a happy attitude, and ignore all comments of (OMG NOOB, STFU NOOB, etc... etc...) And know that it does take a while.

It is nice, however, to see someone enjoying himself in Ascent. A nice break from the huge number of complaint topics that I see about ascent.

I remember when I was first starting out in HA, I'm so glad my friends and guildmates were there to help me through it. I find the competition to be tougher around my playtime (12am-4am CST), but its been a blast! Good luck in all your PVP endeavors in the future man!

From my experience its better to start with IWAY when beginning into HA. It makes good groups for the amount of skill you need for it.. You can get a lot of fame even with an unranked group..
Acapolypse, when you feel you are ready for better teams and you have made a nice friends list of good players you can try out some balanced groups. Make sure it are balanced groups with a plan. Always when they invite you, you should ask for the build. Watch at things like what kind of monks (Woh/HP, SB/Infuse, Restore Prot), corpse control, wards, damage and all that sort of things. If you find such a group you could just join them and see what becomes of it. If you see it is going wrong, take some control of everything (it's good to be a damage dealer in this case). This are some tips from me on problems much people encounter while starting with PvP..
IWAY isn't as dark as it looks like. It is a good way for new people to PvP to start with it.

For new HA players, your best bet is to get into a recruiting PvP guild like XoO, and then learn from there. In terms of play time, I find that many of the best US players play late at night (they've got work or something usually, so they can't log on until late). I'm sure that in a guild with enough people, you could easily find a group even late at night.

Played HA for the first time today! Gained 5 fame. We weren't very good but it was fun and it helped me understand the importance of teamwork. May take me many tries but hopefully i'll make it to the Hall of Heroes sometime! Not to mention i had a good group of laid back guys who were out to do the same thing i was: just play/have fun!
