Default A question about opponents in gvg

we started doing gvg properly with our newly founded guild yesterday. In the morning we were rank 1300, and our oppenents ranks were ranging from rank 500 to 4000+. After 6 or 7 wins we entered the top 500. We played 2 more games then, first one was against a rank 150-ish and the second one against 200-ish. We won both, so thats not the issue.

But the thing id like to ask is, once your guild is in that top 500, do you allways play other top 500 guilds? Or do you get to fight lower ranked teams as well?

Thanks in advance

It depends. If there are similar ranked guilds looking for a game, yes. If there aren't, there might be a discrepency.

We are currently rank 257. our last few battles have been against:

Rank 763
Rank 94
Rank 364
Rank 487
Rank 1142
Rank 187
Rank 90
Rank 15
Rank 174
Rank 337
Rank 171
Rank 172
Rank 464
Rank 360
Rank 19
Rank 346

I think thats pretty much par for the course, although we wouldnt usually play against top 20 sides this frequently, and a couple of those even ranked quite lowly were teams like ReV (rank 94 when we played them) and DSDS (rank 346 when we played them) who are usually top 20 sides but aren't currently

Inside the first two minutes of searching for an opponent you will be matched up against someone within 200 rating points of you (plus or minus). After that you'll get whoever is available. Thus there can be considerable range in who you play, depending on who is on.

It will usually vary largely during downtimes, where you end up getting matched up with whatever guild is available. During peak hours, you will usually end up fighting guilds closer to your range.

Sometimes I think the matches that get put toggether are utterly ridiculous. For example, in past GvGs my guild has gotten thrown into a match vs a <25 guild with no aiting time (we were 700ish).

I usually see about 30% of the matches within our ranks range, 30% against guilds with 1200+ ranks, and 30% against under 400. This was when we were once again hovering around the rank 700 margin. But as we got lower it seemed like we played more matches closer to our rank.

I can only guess that somehow, the match system is set-up so rather than a rank 500-700 play a rank 3,000 they more likely than not get thrown into a match vs. a <100 guild. While it seems like in the 800-1200 mark it's almost a shot in the dark since you can still get thrown into a <200 fight along with the possibility of a >2000 fight.

So I think the higher you get the better you get matched up.

you really have absolutely nothing to complain about playing high ranked guilds. My guild played iQ (mid 20s at the time) when were were ranked upper 170s, when we lost, we got -6 rating. The next win we beat a team in the top 100 and got like 20-25 rating, so its actually more advantageous to play some higher rnaked guilds because
a) risk reward is in the favor of the higher ranked guild, Trust me when the rank 50 guild goes against the rank 3000 guild the rank 50 guild is like we better not lose this or we are prolly outta the top 100, while for the poorly ranked guild, this is simply not the case
b) You will not really learn advanced tactics and elevate your play by playing against crappy teams, playing against good teams is how you learn and improve, you should relish the opportunity.
c) If you are above 300 forget about your rank, theres something fundamentally wrong with your GvG game, build, communication, tactics something. get yer stuff strait before you worry aobut how well you are doing or your win loss record

For a team that has its fundamentals down, you should be able to go 10-0 or similar if you start at 1000 rating.

in all reality, facing a lot better guilds not only make you better, they dont really affect your rank and rating all that much, so i would actually rather fight higher rank guilds then lower ranked ones.

It kinda piss's you off, even when your not playing for rank competitivly yet, when your a rank 800 guild with a high rating and the last 7 guild fights in a row end up against top 100 teams. I dont mind loosing, but most of my guys are practicing how to split, and getting use to working with eachother. Your moral kinda goes through the floor when you lose 7 in a row, reguardless of who they are. I would really hope arena net fix's this.

It is balanced. If you lose to a guild that is hundreds of ranks above you, your rating will take an absolutely miniscule hit. No big loss. Consider it extreme practice.

I think it is absolutely the very best kind of training that there is. lets say you lose all 7 battles, thats going to cost you about 30 points, the same as you would lose losing just 2 to teams ranked similarly to you. except, the two teams ranked similarly to you wont be able to teach you anything, whereas the top 100 guilds will without exception.

After the loss to the top 100 side, if you arent in the habit of FRAPS recording eveyr battle anyway, go into obs mode as a team on voice comms and discuss what happened at each stage of the battle and look at what it was that they did that made them win, and what you did that made you lose. watching the battle from this third party perspective can be very helpful, and often players from the other side will be in oberserver chat and more than happy to provide you with feedback.

as JR- said, the rating calculations are balanced. So if you are rank 115, for example, and you play rank 2 War Machine and end up losing. You lose -2 rating and they gain +2 rating. Now, if you would have won that match, then you would have been at +28, and WM would have lost -28 for that battle.

Anyways no one should be complaining about facing the best guilds in GW. Its a great oppurtunity to gain experience and knowledge.

Realize that higher end guilds tend to play more. Therefore the higher you rank, the easier it will be to get a close match especially if you are playing at peak periods.
