Default Tips for playing IWAY.

I figure that if people are going to play IWAY, they might as well learn to play it correctly. Feel free to append or add on to this list. Keep comments constructive, I will NOT tolerate flaming. Any flaming will be immediately reported to a moderator and summarily dealt with. I originally posted this list on GWOnline.net.

TIPS FOR PLAYING IWAY.

Here is the build. I have done some editing to the wiki, it's a little bit out of date. All IWAY warriors should be running 16 Axe Mastery, and either 11 Str. 8 Beast, or 10 Str. 9 Beast.

All players on the team should:
Resurrect any fallen teammate immediately (unless the other team has a Frozen Soil up, in which case you should take it down if it benefits the opposing team more than it benefits you. If it's your FS, well, good luck.)

Do NOT kill the Ghostly Hero unless you need the morale boost to reactivate res sigs. In addition, if your party has anyone with DP, kill the Ghostly before killing the last player alive on the opposing team.

Orders Necro:
  1. Use your sacrificing skills intelligently - sacrifice just enough to keep the team going, but protect yourself first and stay out of trouble.
  2. Be sure to use Healing Seed whenever needed (ex. when fighting the Zaishen in the beginning, seed the Tainted when he runs in to Gale/meteor the Elementalist to prevent the wards from coming up.)
  3. Please do NOT bring Order of Vampire, that skill is now useless post-patch. Bring a monk elite instead, Healing Hands is a popular one.
Tainted Flesh Necro:
  1. Wear Bloodstained Boots
  2. Exploit the corpses as soon as possible - a well placed Well of the Profane can do wonders for an IWAY team fighting an enchantment heavy build.
  3. Use Windborne Speed on the Ghostly Hero as well as the Relic Runner on relic running maps. This is so Ghostly can follow the sprinter to capture the altar immediately on Altar maps, which is essential to IWAY if you're fighting a holding build.
  4. Use Windborne Speed on the offensive trappers at 0 seconds, especially on The Underworld, Scarred Earth and Unholy Temples. This ensures that the vital bridge areas can be controlled before the opposition. (suggested by Nerdy.) The counter to this is to have the sprinter sprint to the bridge, disrupt the trapper until the rest of the team arrives, and then just kill the trapper while he's separated from the rest of his team.
  5. Have two weapon sets [and a third, empty slot to get those 3 button mesmers off your back], one with a +30hp/+20% ench staff, and the otherwith a +15e wand and +15e offhand. These are vital in the last moments of Altar Capture maps like the Hall of Heroes. (Suggested by Juicey Shake.)
  6. Be sure to watch and support your warriors with a Gale when necessary (such as in the case of a running target), especially against RC Active Prot monks. (Suggested by Juicey Shake.)
Martyr Trapper:
  1. When one or more warrior's call Blind, use Martyr.
  2. Depending on if you're the defensive or offensive trapper, when fighting other IWAY teams, you should, for the most part, ask for the warriors to stay back and trap, waiting for the other team to run into your traps. This goes for resolve trappers as well. The exception to this is if the opposing team has overextended players, or you think you have the opportunity to gank their trapper.
Warriors:
  1. Do NOT run away and die on your own - this is called overextension and allows the other team to easily pick you off. Also, bring a bow/ranged weapon and try to send in your pet first to allow it to die, so you already have dead pets to use to power IWAY.
  2. Don't run into stacks of traps without Healing Seed on you. For that matter, try not to run into stacks of traps at all unless you've notified your Martyr ranger and/or orders necro and they're prepared to keep you alive.
  3. When fighting builds running Life Bond, it is important to kill the Life Bonder (usually the monk running Blessed Signet) as soon as possible. Life Bond can make it prohibitively difficult to kill players on the other team. If you're fighting a balanced build, Warriors should be assigned to each monk to put pressure on them, unless the decision is made to spike a single target (with charged up Exec/Evisc.) Warders are also a priority target, as WaF and WaM can disable an IWAY team quickly.

Good post imo.

Another suggestion to add for Tainted Necro is to windbourne offensive trappers at 0 seconds, especially on The Underworld, Scarred Earth and Unholy Temples.

This ensures that the vital bridge areas can be controlled before the opposition.

I have personally been playing IWAY as a PUG, or in a level of more organized group, from these experiences, a good successful session dependent on the player’s quality, teamwork and communication. Thus it would be very commonly narrowed minded to say, all IWAY groups have “no skillz”.

I would love to see this thread cover on more about target calling and tactical methods on the maps.

Though I find it a distraction of thread as the original poster answering himself such as the post above.

Hmm, good guide to basic, stock iway. Stock iway is boring... to low-damage and low-defense for my tastes, but then again kura spoils us with well thought-out builds..

But I play a lot, modded, but still, so here's something to say: A good team should have [1 on 1 not taking altar / spike teams into consideration] 2 wars on 1 target, and the other two freelancing from bonders to annoying 3 button mesmers and the like.

I like taint necros, it's what I play the most, and your two biggest concerns are- a: corpse control, and b: galing ;]. Yes, galing! You need to watch your lead two warriors and who they are attacking, preferably have them call their target. If that target is a prot monk / etc, try to gale the guardian [some amount of anticipation and prediction is needed for this] -- watch for them to run, and if they run while under 50% hp.. make sure you gale :].

Also, when tainting, you should have two weapon sets [and of course a third, empty slot to get those 3 button mesmers off your back], one a +30hp/+20% ench staff, and two a +15e wand and +15e offhand. This are vital in the last moments of altar cap maps like hoh, and have saved the match for me many times. Let's you make sure -you- get that well of the profane up and not your enemy, allowing your hero to be seeded, survive an onslaught of enemy attacks, and capture the altar! Also allows you to maintain corpse control and gale a few monks keeping their hero up to allow yours to cap, etc! Also, with the +30e, the fact that you only have 2e regeneration shouldn't matter because your en should be capping out at exhaustion level because of soul reaping triggering.

Hope this helps for any hopeful guys out there.. but try modding your iway, stock is so blegh. ~_~.

if the enemy's trapper takes "control" a bridge (except for the first relic run), ignore that trapper and wait for the enemies to charge. dont cross and let someone bust the traps (say a ranger, if your pets are dead) if you wanna go to the other side or take the long way.

establish lines. dont overextend. dont fight on traps. warriors should be able to see other vulnerable dying targets.

be sure to take down the bonder and the classes that have warrior hate first.

first relic run: have to control the bridge but trappers should not stay there and trap. assist your warriors. protect your necros while taking note of the captured bridge.

for necros, dont expect to be baby sitted by a trapper. trappers are primarily there to add more pressure, not to protect your ass. if trappers are busy in the offense line, try to kite, go to a nearest trapper or ask a warrior to back you up. if death is un avoidable, dont die in a spot where it is almost impossible to ressurect you.

trappers, dont just trap and trap. try to kite as well. you must know when you go offensive mode or defense mode, (depending on enemies' positional density). assist the warriors.

warriors, use peripheral vision, you must know when to fight inside the wards, take down targets fast, learn to coordinate with a trapper/tainted.

to sum it up: "play it like football, not mud wrestling"

modding iway is for sissies. 1 n/mo 1n/ele 4 w/r and 2 r/me is the way to go.

Oh yeah, I'm aware of tomcruisejr.

But yep, Ele's and Mesmers aren't generic iway chars. Here's the bar from last night as the spirit spam/trapper.

http://img81.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hoh20be.jpg

The Ele bar was basically packed with high energy nukes and a recuperation spirit. Although the build seems to change a lot and a lot of crazy ideas get thrown in.

Anyway, don't be afraid to do a little (or a lot) of modding to IWAY.

Well, its not really a standard 'iway' trapping build. IWAY trappers don't usually bring Oath, EW, QZ and EOE.

But I see what you're saying, it was basically just an oath shot spirit spammer/trappin build.

Here's a standard as hell IWAY trapper build....

modding iway is also good. but for rightist iwayers, revision is a sin.

2 trappers + 4 warriors + 2 necros setup is strong (mainly annihilation) if played right.

IWAY should really consider an Oath Shot spirit spammer and take the spirits off the warriors.

@dansamy

Well, that's been done several times before, but it doesn't show any particular advantage over the standard IWAY trapper builds. While having an Oath Shot spirit spammer in Bloodspike builds is a huge benefit (energy from soul reaping), skills like Martyr are much more important to IWAY than the ability to spam spirits repeatedly or freeing up a skill slot on the warriors.

QFT. Can't say I approve of IWAY (never played it) but it's biggest weakness is conditions. Blind, weakness, and cripple all hurt your DPS badly, and it's not very hard to spread those around your warriors.
