I agree completely, Akhilleus. Good leaders would be able to properly oversee the usage of this form of chat. If it becomes a means of simply chatting over trivial matters, encourage visiting each other's guild halls to do that in local or team chat instead. It is not that hard to oversee matters such as this, no matter what the size. If a guild isn't able to manage that, then they would evidently have a problem, whether it be in leadership, member behavior, or whatever.

I can see why some larger guilds would be satisfied with it being the way it is, it removes the necessity to oversee its usage. But many guilds, believe it or not, are capable of overseeing it just fine. And if some reason 'Only leaders/officers would have anything worth saying over alliance chat anyway' - smack them. The bottom line is that it isn't fair to loyal members, and that it seems to automatically override a leader's ability to oversee the goings on of their guild.

Edit: Would it be possible to relocate this thread to the Sardelac Sanitarium board, since we are asking for a change? ArenaNet really needs to be aware of this. ><

Yup, AKH purely summed it up, also Mr_t_bot made a good point, in an alliance the so called "pawns" are the majority and should gaint he mot benefit of the alliances.

Also, and option to ONLY hear officers and leader, or hear all in alliance chat would be a good idea,

Normal members shouldn't be allowed to touch it imo, the officers earned it

From what I hear, everyone will be allowed to talk in alliance chat when alliances are updated and fixed, but I'm not positive.

I love how this works. I need something done but my guild figures you know 10 officers is enough. I notice that there are only three people on in my guiild so I want to see if others can help from the alliance. Oh wait I have no officer or leader on. So now I am reduced to using my friends list to contact each person individually to see if they want to help. Awesome. All people there is no option to give people the privilage of using this chat.

I get it some do not want to have everyone having the ability to kick members and stuff. But restricting the ability to talk to every in the alliances at once? Come on.

Eitherway I am over this now. I just keep it off now. Unless it is fixed if I cannot respond, why have it on?

Sorry, but your post made it look like alliance chat is just an ego boost for officers. Who cares if the chat is useless 90% of the time, as long as only select few people can use it, eh? Luckily most people don't see it that way. Alliance chat has great community-forming potential, it shouldn't be artificially restricted. As it has been mentioned in this thread and elsewhere, it really should be in guild/alliance leaders' hands to decide how to best make use of the feature.

I'd definately want everybody to be able to talk in Alliance chat. Sure, it would be a lot of people talking at once, but I'd turn it off when I didn't want to chat. IMO, it'd be better used as a channel for chatting it up than an Officer channel. If the Officers want to have a private discussion over Alliance politics ect, they can go to a GH and use teamchat.

Oh crap!

Me and another officer were experimenting with Alliance chat today - and cos we were officers we didnt know we were the only ones who could talk there.

We have a large active guild - and we have a number of people with contacts in other guilds who we were thinking of allying with - I'm totally dissappointed if only officers can use Alliance chat

i do think though that when using alliance chat officers/leaders' texts should show up as a different color, so you can tell whose who from other guilds (and make it easier for officers to regulate).

at first I thought I would have some reserves but even my silly officers were abusing it before it became useful sooooo..... Yeah I can see why its only officers and the guild leader - may not be totally fair but it keeps the idiots out of it ya know? (sorry we do have a few idiots in our guild and I speak out about them even if I do lub them)

If everyone could use it what the hell would be the point of guild chat??

I Have strict path to promotion in my guild, its easy.. if you recruit more than 2 members you can have officer, but if those members leave you will be demoted!..

Officers are there for recruiting and looking after the people they recruit, im sick of officers who dont do 'F'all in the guild so the alliance chat rule along with my officer promotion rule will work very much in my favor!

BTW, can you see other guilds roster? or activity? Im still waiting for other guild leaders to get to the ambasadors

Hehehe my husband is leader but they follow me for the most part, I pity our guild if we ever divorce XD Behind every good leader is his first mate

Anyways in order to make officer in our guild (except for random promotions in order to demote someone >_> ) ya have to be kind, helpful, able to communicate well with others, and have at least some leadership skills. Ya gotta earn it! We have had two officers get demoted, my brother and one of our good friends for their lack of playing GW and playing other games X'D

The friend logs on and says: Hey I logged on before Ryan does that mean I will get back my promotion sooner? >_>

=P
I love my guys!

OK thread stealing over and I still say its a bad idea unless as someone said you are a small guild then just promote everyone!

Alliance chat has been opened to everyone. I think this closes the argument.

that is a great idea. And I'm kinda glad they opened it up for everyone becuase now it's like a private channel reaching possibly hundreds of ppl. and i dunno about others, but in our alliance, we give hearty discounts and i have saved LOTS of money using that rather than regular. 3 cheers for the Heroes Inc. Alliance!
