The main reasons you would want factions would be for illusion mesmers, touch rangers / blood necros, curse necros, and of course assassins and rits.
In agreement here, apart from maybe expel hexes for TA. You could run gift of health on a boonprot sure...much in the same way you could force him to run silverwing slash instead of galrath. The fact is that a lot of top builds have characters with no factions skills at all. Of course if he had factions he could run a greater variety of builds, but this isn't to say at all that without factions he could not run builds which are just as accepted and just as useful.

Err, I take back everything I have said in this thread so far.

For some reason I was under the impression he said Factions only. Reading for the win.

And don't forget about elementalists, they actually have useful armor in factions.

I'll take your word for it, but I have a hard time imagining getting depressed for not being able to fit seeking arrows into a build (mostly because I've never seen anyone use it and can't recall what it does).

What does "seeing something a lot" have to do with anything relevant? Let's ignore the fact that a death necro in 4v4 is already a weak choice. Then let's say for some reason you want to raise minions instead of putriding every corpse that comes around. Animate flesh golem is still a waste of a body, and subsequently a waste of a skill (let alone your elite slot), because it does less DPS than a bone fiend.

Again, with the focusing on what other people use. I'm just saying if you want to run a water ele you can run it just fine with prophecies skills, and likely be more competant than 80% of people in RA. Vapor blade is a decent skill, but no must-have for arena play, especially with how many enchants are usually around.

I don't get why people are picking at a few skills that may fit into some bars. There are only a handful of must-have skills from factions for certain characters.

Yes, you can pvp successfully with just prophecies skills. Factions just adds some key skills in specific builds, but you can still roll a large number of commonly used builds just fine with prophecies-only skills.

Now that I went away and actually learnt to read;

The last two GvG builds I have ran had no Factions skills at all, baring Expell Hexes on the Mesmer; which could easily have been subbed out for Mantra of Recovery and Remove Hex. They just simply aren't hugely interesting to me.

So as for arena goes; you can still run a perfectly decent build.

*smacks head more*

Woa! Thanks for all your replies. For the time being, I probably will stay prophecies only and enjoy all the contents in it.

I've had some sweet moments in RA last night so probably you guys are right, I can do OK even when I have only unlocked like 5% of the prophecy skills

I also think Prophecies skills are more beginner-friendly...just compare how conditional some factions skills are...and how they function ( Quivering Blade, several dagger attacks, some Ritualist rituals... Compare those skills to let's say...Flare? )

you have to admit that most of the new skills have a very large surprise factor with them, and there are less known/popular counters tho

With Factions-only, you could still make decent Assassins and Ritualists, but that's all. If you want to play as a core profession with only Factions, you better learn how to make builds with extremely limited selections.
