I've reached and held HoH multiple of times with Vimway. So far I have never won HoH with Iway.

With the most recent HoH patch, it's a challenge not to skip there after ~3 maps :\

some of the best players in the game played FotM builds untill they got "good" enough to join decent pugs and guilds. I don't like that it works that way, but that's the way it works. You'll see a few rank 3 groups in HoH, very few actually win, maybe a few r6 groups winning a couple of rounds, and a lot of r9 groups holding halls. Seeing as how pugs base skill on rank, the only thing you can do aside from building a friends list with good players, is keep on grinding. Basically, it's not the builds that win, but the players.

nope
a balanced team usually has much less holding ability than a spike team

spike teams are pretty much synonymous with being a holding team. Sure its possible to create a balanced team with the holding capabilities of a spike team but its very rare to come across.
But if "reaching hoh" means who has the best chances of going through each map and get to hoh then balanced is the most capable. The point of balanced is to be able to beat just about any build on any map. With this comes some utility thats become almost standard in all balanced builds: winborne to cap altar on broken tower and to help in relic runs, foes to help kite and slow down for altar runs, interrupts to keep other ghosts from capping.
