The issue becomes Looking pretty vs. playing competitively.

Lucis Loves Nutella from iQ comes to mind. I was talking to him in HA once about his armor, citing I was surprised that he used a pvp character. Turned out he just had drok's gladiators, then proceeded to swap armors to various canthan sets (I'll assume a +armor one and +health). That's being competitive. he doesn't REALLY care about how his character looks (though female warriors look very good in the tyrian 1.5k armor from voldo the exotic, as well as canthan 1.5k) but instead uses a pve character to give himself an advantage.

Additionally, it isn't too terribly hard to get cheap, good weapons. Wing's axe is insanely cheap, the end game weapons are practically free. Additionally, high req stuff is generally very cheap, especially with the double gold chests/double gold drops weekends they had. And since req has no effect on damage output, just grab a req 12 zodiac axe or whatever skin strikes your fancy, and go to town.

As I have noted earlier, the only thing you have to splurge on for warrior are some perfect health mods (depending on how many greens you like to use) and a sup vigor. If you play through factions and do a bit of farming here and there, you should have no trouble affording anything unless you absolutely have to have low reqs (WHY?).

I repeat, and I will repeat oftenuntil this thread is good and dead, and that's don't gimp yourself in pvp with imperfect items.

I've been dropped down to exactly one hit point at least a dozen times in the least year in competitive PvP matches, including once in the last week.

Every little bit doesn't matter. A lot of the time you'll get away with running slightly substandard equipment, but it definitely will cost you deaths, or kills, in the long run.

Peace,
-CxE

think of it this way:

EvIL featured some of the best "dressed" characters in competitive gvg. did that help them win the GWFC?

WM, probably the worst "dressed" characters in competitive gvg, went on to win it all. to this day, i'm still not sure if they're playing pve characters or not.

play for competitive advantage, not looks.

Look up Sirlin on google and then add to that the definition of toxicity . . .

No. It's not wrong, but many people are not terribly huge fans of Sirlin and his "play to win" articles. I've won (and lost) games playing all kinds of gimmicks, "real" builds, "griefing" builds, "vod" builds.... The point is that the games were won (or lost) on how well I played whatever I was playing, not on how "broken" it was. (Although, some things were soooo broken, it was hysterically funny to play them. )

Is that so? I've always had the impression that Sirlin was very popular amongst GW players. I like his articles, anyways

Well, there are those who are fans and then, as always, those who are not. Personally, I don't give a rat's @** what Sirlin wrote in the past or will write in the future. The only thing I don't/won't do to win is blatantly cheat. Otherwise, all's fair in love and war, and this ain't love.

(Yes, I abused the ever-loving hell out of Ether Renewal and cried the day they nerfed it.)

oh, so that's what you mean.

i'm not exactly promoting the use of any method to win. all i was saying was to not put yourself at a disadvantage. there's no real point to use a pve char if it will disadvantage you.

Entirely off topic, but it's a topic of interest so I will indulge:

Sirlin also states in part 3 (I think?) of the Playing To Win series that you are only playing to win if you are also playing to improve as a player. Thus you could argue that his ethos objects to gimmick type farming builds and serious bug abuse.

(The section about roll-cancelling in Street Fighter amused me greatly around the time that the VoD gate bug abuse was going on.)

Sirlin is covering his @** after the earlier portions of PTW blatantly encouraged bug abuse. If you win, you are not automatically a better player than your opponent. One party may have experienced any number of bugs, errors, disadvantages, etc. Any game can be manipulated, abused, distorted. Only in very rare instances is abuse actually punished in any meaningful way, which only serves to further encourage the abuse. If developers truly want fair tournament play, they would zealously seek out and ban/dq/disband players/parties/guilds guilty of abuse, manipulation, etc. One would think that Anet in particular, having hosted 2 $100,000 real cash purse tournaments, would have wanted them to be as far above reproach as they could be. Well, we see how the allegations of ladder manipulation, cheating, abusing, bugging, etc have turned out in the past. So be it. All's fair in love and war. If it gives you the upper hand and increases the likelihood that you will win, so be it.

The mods have completely destroyed this thread, the purpose of which was to convince a newer player to continue trying PvP. Its rather funny.

OH btw JR thank you for changing the avatar the new one looks sooooooooo much better.
