Default The State of the Heroes Ascent Section

This morning I decided to have a quick browse of the Glads forums, checking them in my usual manner. I was slightly stunned to see that the vast majority of the front page of threads were locked. Some of these I know I had done myself, but the rest I checked out. I was disappointed to see that every one of these locks was justified, due to people filling threads with the same old garbage.

It has been made repeatedly clear that Anet developers read this forum. Here they seek insight, opinions, and see what issues are currently bothering the community. Or... they would do, if this forum was actually readable. How can you honestly expect to be taken seriously as a community with the kind of childishness that goes on?

It has gotten to the point where either things change, or I start requesting bans on trouble makers. Hell initially I wanted the whole HA forum locked and removed, but after reading some posters and talking to people via PM I realized that it does in fact have potential - and the HA community does deserve attention.

It dissapoints the most because of how much I am pushing for requested changes and improvements to HA, only to be undermined by the attitudes of a community I supposedly moderate. If you wish to have an effect and an influence on changes to HA, which is an ENTIRELY realistic desire, clean up the attitudes - seriously.

Regards,
Your friendly moderator.

(Leaving this open for any discussion, and because I am sick of seeing locked threads.)

Yeah I agree JR, it seems every good thread comes down to arguing about something whether its Heroes/IWAY/fame system/omg Anet did something positive for HA now I'll play!

If we want Anet to take your thoughts seriously we need less unconstructive flaming

Agreed. You need to start getting bans on people that hijack threads into iway flames, etc.

Yeah everytime I come into the HA section the most active stuff gets locked due to the fact the same things get brought up everytime like how rank means nothing etc...

Every good point is made in the first few pages. Then it's IWAY bash & flamebait.
You should lock & sticky .

i cant comment much cos i havent posted that often... only when i have something important to say or if im bored :P

What i can say from what ive seen... both in threads started by others and in threads started by me... there are some people who do not contribute very constructively to discussions - thats my polite way of putting it. It is very frustrating when you are trying to host a mature debate to encourage people to voice their opinions constructively. I think the biggest factor that contributes to this problem is that GW is free to play... and membership of forums like this is also free. I cant claim to know the age of the people who ruin threads... but id take a guess that the level of maturity in some posts is a reflection of their age.

I was quite pleased at the thread i started about skill changes for the next season... the majority of the posts were interesting and many people made some very thought provoking suggestions. Although there were moments when i wish i could have deleted some posts!

if i could suggest a course of action to prevent this... and im sure you probably do it already... why not pm the ''troublemakers'' and ask them if they can try to contribute more constructively and less inflamatory towards others... and if they continue to lower the tone of threads... suspend their account and finally... ban them if necessary.

thats just my humble opinion of course!

and i really do hope Gaile's thread on HA remains open... id rather you delete all the rubbish from it and ban the culprits from posting in it than for you to lock it... its not often we get someone from Anet asking us what we think!

Beginning of the mess there..so just Shut Up.

For a game that's as balanced as I've seen from any game...there is WAY too much bitching about this and that on the forums, and JR, and the rest of the Mods do a great job at keeping it under control IMO.

Oddly enough, the PvP aspect of these forums seem to be locked alot more than others...it's not the Mods being hardasses.....its the people being jackasses.

Use your heads.

I dont think people can help but be childish after 2 months of rather low-quality PvP gameplay, especially in HA. And its not like the GW PvP'ers are immature or something, its everyone. I dont even go to the PvE forums but theyre probably full of "we want an auction house" and "black dye isnt even black" and all that.

Agreed, but childish attitudes are not going to contribute anything for the better.

Honestly, I have avoided HA forums like the plague, but when it was brought up by the supermoderators that there was quite a bit of flame-festing going on that needed to be handled and that we (the Gladiators Arena moderators) needed to step up and handle it, I came in here, rolled up my sleeves and got to work. I've gotten my share of hate PMs and whine/bitch posts/threads in response to my efforts. Unfortunately, every lock I've tossed on a thread has been well-deserved. This forum is a mess. Certain posters are more acerbic and offensive than others. I don't mind a sarcastic sense of humor and some folks need a bit of prodding to get their heads out of their arses. Outright flames, whining, +1 post count spam, /agree without backup reasoning, moderating bitchfests will all be locked and/or deleted on sight. The HA forum is my personal mod playground now. When I am cranky, I'm here looking for stuff to delete and lock, and there's plenty of cannon fodder for it because the posters in this area can't seem to intelligently present their thoughts without resorting to juvenility. Clean it up or see it get locked and deleted. Don't like it? Appeal to JR's soft & cuddly side. (It helps if you're a female with a sexy Southern accent. )

PS - I expect Billiard or JR to probably come along and edit this. I tend to shoot straight from the hip a bit and fail to coddle the more sensitive souls among us.

Kudos to JR for re-opening really good thread <3.

As usual the best posts in thread here are on the first 4-5 pages. Then people start to get emotional and yeah, thread going to pieces. TBH the best option for mods, If I may suggest, is not locking the thread, as this punishes also good posters, but deleting unappropriate posts, and banning repetetive offenders :P

Sadly you can't see the posts that we DO delete. If you could see that, then you would understand that in threads with some merit there can be up to 40+ deleted posts before I finally lose my patience and lock it. Locking a thread that has the potential for intelligent and constructive debate is always a last resort for me.

As for banning repeat offenders, that is an idea that is beginning to appeal to me. It is something I have avoided in the past, due to some of the worst offenders being also some of the more interesting and insightful - when they choose to be. I can think of at least a few who often let their egos get in the way of posting intelligently, which is very much to their discredit. I'm not sure if you are aware that I was banned from guru for an extended stretch of time for flaming in this section, before coming back as a moderator to re-vamp it as a more serious place for PvP discussion.

<3 you too.

I just have one question, was Gaile's thread initially locked because I kept posting in reply to Randomway telling him that 6v6 doesn't suck, but that 8v8 was better. I felt partly responsible the next morning when I saw the thread locked .
@ Juniordash, kinda off topic but what happened to ICE?

A multitude of reasons, but as long as you see where you may have been at fault then it matters little.

We went into the play-offs with some internal drama, with the motivation to compete being the only thing keeping us together as a team at the time. Drama between players and conflicting attitudes exploded almost immediately afterwards, and the guild disbanded.

The thread was initially locked because I spent an hour or two cleaning up the whining, bitching, flaming, +1 post count spam, /agree without any rationale being posted to support the the agreement, etc. Along with my cleaning, I posted a warning to the thread's followers to keep it clean or I would lock it. Immediately afterwards, a post was made re: moderating the thread which was basically a bitch/flame at me for moderating the thread. I deleted said post and tossed on the shackles. JR (out of kindness and a genuine interest that ArenaNet recieve worthwhile feedback re: the state of HA) re-opened the thread. Consider it a Christmas present. Since the thread has previously gotten very messy and took a lot of work on my part to clean up, I will be watching it very closely. Learn to behave yourselves. Most of you guys are grown and/or nearly grown. Is it really that hard to respecfully disagree? Must you always make it into a personal attack?

JR- killed [ICE]. He caught the guild killing flu from D1CE.

Seeing as its allways the same people hijacking threads, posting the same crap over and over again, i dont think a few bans would be misplaced.

yep and the forum should have say "get 5 warning points from the mods and bye bye guru" system.

mods should implement teh iron hand sometimes. i don't care if it hits me tho. guru is more fun and addicting than gw. need to ban me so i can spend more time playing the game.
