Default How do you start 'HAing'?

Iv been in the game for a long time and have played mostly PvE and Alliance battles, but recently iv become interested in starting to do Hero's Ascent. My problem is that im not in a PvP guild (and really don't want to leave mine) and am un-ranked(actually have like 5 fame). I know this is not an uncommon problem and would like to know how someone like me would go amout getting into HA.

Join a PvP guild or dont play serious PvP. That is my experiences.
Either that, or find a friend in a PvP guild that would let you guest for him.

If you have no serious PvP experience, i suggest you to train playing something like a monk in RA/TA. Monks are always needed for guesting.

pick up groups. thats the only way. HA is really stupid though. not the pvping itself, but the ppl that form groups. they believe that if u dont have a rank ur much much inferior than them. this is not true. i guarantee non ranked ppl would have a chance of beating ranked ppl. i really hate the way ppl form ranked groups. so look for pickup groups or even start one. i got my first ranks with this team build: its a balanced build.

tank, preferably thumper or shock axe warrior
sandstorm warder
grenth dervish
word of healing monk
restore condition monk
-optional-

usually works 4 me, u may build up some fame. other than that, most ranked groups are ignorant, so dont try begging. good luck. i only started HAing also, so if u wanna meet up, my ign is Xeones The Great. hope this helped.

Just to be pointy, there are no "tanks" in PvP. And you cannot "aggro people", unless they are really retarded (like their AI friends).

Rank is the only system we have. It's better to have a ranked person than an unranked person if you do not know someone. Why? The chances of them being bettere, are higher...

Quote:

I hope you are aware that ''ignorant'' means 'without knowledge'; therefore, your statement is complete nonsense; in addition, this thread wasn't a hate thread on ranked people - it was how to start HA'ing. Other day I made a group with unranked people for a laugh. I gave the skills, attributes or each bar. What happened? I asked for an Spiteful S/Warder, I gave him the bar but basically he turned out to be an MM with shock... Wonderful...

---

To keep on topic :

Just talk to people in HA and stuff who can help you. Preferably ranked people. Yes they might be bad, but they'll still have some knowledge on the game... Get your guild to PVP as well maybe? If you join a group, ask them for a skillbar and ask them how to best play that class. Don't claim to know anything, even if you do.

Concentrate on playing many builds, and playing them well - don't concentrate on the fame.

To sum it up : Don't ask how to HA, just do it, type in local chat 'looking for group, can play any build - message me', then if they name a build you can't play, search it - get faction for the skills in RA/TA before this and then you'll be able to play it.

I'm sick of people saying that there is rank discrimination. K, let's say there is rank discrimination. Now, this would imply that the lower ranks are EXACTLY AS GOOD OR BETTER than the ranked players and simply cannot get into those ranked groups because of their rank. This leads to two questions : 1. if you're as good or better, why do you want in. 2. if it's discrimination, why not just form an unranked group that will pwn all the ranked ones? you phail

i started PvP trying to stay in my pve Guild , i could say that was a bad error.
it took forever to get rank 3(no iway then) , after that i realized i have to leave my PvE guild to play seriusly.

few suggestion

join in a PvP guild , i never tried but i think many rank3+ guild will take you anyway even if you are unranked if you ask nicely due the hunger of member.

don't be ashamed to play FotM.

if you dont understand how to play something watch a observer match and check how some other player play your build.

QFT.

At night, I usually run with r10s and r11s. During the day, since most of those guys aren't on yet, I'll run with just about anyone if they know what works/fails in HA and why. I ran into a (presumably) unranked heal monk the other day who refused to believe that veil was better than ihex. He asked me to explain why and after I gave him four reasons he countered with "but ihex has a faster cast time" and insisted on carrying it anyway (even though I was running Divert Hexes). He then proceeded to lecture me on the superiority of Divine Intervention over Healing Seed. Yes, you read that correctly. Divine Intervention.

The point here isn't so much that rank matters, but understanding does. If a r10 told me the same thing that guy did, I'd laugh at him just as hard and I'd pass up his group just the same. The best way to climb the latter in HA is having a solid understanding of the mechanics of HA and acting accordingly. I've been grouping with r9+ since r5 as a result, obviously not because I was a r9 but because I took the time to learn the builds, understand how they worked, and how to run them. Sometimes, it's just as important for the other team to realize how good you are as it is for your own team. That's how I ended up grouping with people that had like ten times more fame than me.

That said, I'm not gonna lie: getting to r3 from unranked, largely clueless groups was one of the harder things I've ever done in GW. It really does take a lot of patience, especially if you don't run FotM. lishi is probably right too; I went through pretty much the exact same thing and I came to the realization that a PvE guild wasn't the answer. At the very least you could look into joining a PvP-oriented alliance.

Rank 3 is always the hardest. You COULD always form a rank 3+ group and if you seem to understand the game most people won't care. Infact, many people don't.

ok alot of that is helpful. im still confused by alot of things though.
how are you supposed to learn the builds? the HA builds section on guru contains only a few builds and the wiki builds are just a joke, and people in game wont help you by explaining a build. it took me 20 minutes to find a person willing to explain zergway to me today, and i still dont fully understand it.

also no one really accepts you into a group even if you do know the build. I spent half an hour trying to get into a group with a greneth dervish before i got bored and went to alliance battles(with a build almost identical to ones iv seen in a few matches iv observed).

I suppose i could look for a pvp guild, i guess ill just leave my guild with my best friend. If anyone is in a PvP guild willing to take me in please PM me. IGN: Coloneh The Reaper.

thanks for all the advice.

If you want to get into pvp, look for a gvg or TA guild. HA isn't respected pvp and won't get you into good groups later on.

Coloneh you are best off with doing RA or TA for starters. Go in observer mode for HA and copy a certain players skill bar and then go test it and understand the skills/counters etc. I know it's not HA but the matches are usually quick and a lot of players go there just to test things out. Being a good monk takes awhile but it is probably the best way to understand opposing builds. For instance we had a pug monk in our group earlier today (r9) that had malaise on him constantly and didn't bring along a -energy set. Learning how to kite is essential as some players think ward melee is their friend yet getting hammered by aoe.

ward foes > melee

Hide your title (shouldnt be hard as you aint got one), and start a r7+ group. Nobody asks the leader for their title Make sure you do know what to do in HoH tho....

doing HA takes time. If youre unranked it will take you 1/2 an hour cause ppl will not easyly accept you into the group. If you're r3+ it will take you 1/2 an hour cause it will be hard to find ppl with your kind of rank.
So just have time. Use a standard build, inovative ppl are not tollerated in HA, cause most of the ppl there are just for farming fame. Use one of the builds suggested earlyer. If you find it hard getting into a group just form your own. Dont be afraid that you dont know the maps. Get the group going and from time to time you will get into a map you dont know what to do (my first time in HOH I missed the sigi cause I didnt know of the drops, lol), ppl who play with you will explain to you, or you will find out the 3rd time you play it. Enentualy you will get fame and visit hoh. That is how I started and again it takes time. You will soon find out that if you think a little you will form groups just as good if not better that the groups you join (My first 2 times in HOH was with a team I formed. 2 roa, 2 fs, 1 rc monk, 1 healer monk).

Whoever suggested you to go TA/RA 1st, don't listen to him. It will only make it harder for you to start HA-ing. Get rank 3, it will be hard, but it's needed for you to at least get familiar with all the maps. When you get rank 3 you can join r3+ groups and when you notice that someone in the group is mature and knows how to play add him to friends. After some time you'll have a nice friends list and you can even make your own guild. You'll make your own build or modify one and get used to play with each other. That's about it.

Uhm...no, you should unlock loads of skills in PvE first, so that you can play any build the community desires, not just a few, FoTMs can cahnge relatively fast, especially when you're monking don't go with 2 builds, go with whatever build is in play, and try unlocking every single used/good elite.

1 )If you want to play HA, dont bother starting in RA or TA. While TA has some really good, experienced teams around, HA is something different. And being good in TA doesnt make you good in HA. That point is true, when you have some pvp experience. When you;re a complete pve noob, try arenas first, to learn the basics.

2) Pug to rank 3, this is going to be hard, but it takes some dedication to start. Try to form your own unranked teams ( use builds that you see in observer mode ).

3) Add the good players from your pugs to the friendlist, and invite them again when you'll be forming

4) After rank 3, try to get to a low ranked HA guilds, a lot of them are recruting everyone. If you manage to get a good friendlist by that time, you can start your own guild.

5) Most important thing - dont cry on forums, dont give up, play and learn!
