ANet is saying you wouldn't have to grind to level 99 or whatever to be "good" at the game (aka having godly items, stats, damage, etc). Its actually based on how well you play (your skill at the game). However, you actually have to learn how to play (that seems to be what you're missing). ANet never sold the game saying you'd start off being skillful at the game. You have to learn how to play and become skillful.
Oh I'm not missing anything, but I think that you are. Of course some people are more skillful than others, but according to the quotation you posted yourself, "skill, not hours played" is what ArenaNet sold their game on.

That means that ArenaNet sold their game on that everyone had equal opportunity, without having to put in extra effort. What I quoted in the first place was a line saying "Why should anyone have an equal opportunity in GW without putting in effort?"

So here we are, back at square one. People should have equal opportunity in Guild Wars without having to put in any extra effort. Of course, just as in the real world, the more skillful people are better at what they do, and skill usually comes from pratice, but everyone should have an -equal opportunity-, just as the game box says.

everyone has an equal opportunity. players will all boil down to having UAX or maxed out pve characters, which will be the same for everyone. there are no rare weapons or rare skills, as someone said, that can only be used by a select group of people to their advantage.

there are no extra effort that must be put. if there is, that extra effort has been done by the veterans when they first played the game and that same extra effort must also be done by the new players for them to start catching up. so everyone is in equal footing still.

You are missing something. The box never promises equal opportunity. It promises "skill, not hours played", and thats what it delivers. Equal opportunity and "skill, not hours played" are vastly different things. ANet is saying you don't have to grind to level 99. Its based on how well you play (your skill) that determines the win. Let me know where ANet said equal opportunities. Let me know where ANet said you started of the game as a skilled player. You have to put the effort to become skilled.

Maybe guild wars should have equal opportunity. Its a debatable issue. But what I can tell you is that ANet most certainly did not promise it, nor did they build their game off that premise. Feel free to e-mail ANet if you want to confirm this...
