A hammer warrior will give you considerable time to do things before they can unload their hammer chain because of the adrenaline buildup, and you can kite them to let your teammates do some damage. Burst sins kill newbies before they can even cast anything.

it was sarcastic a comment.
What I wanted to say is that current game is much more brutal and much less forgiving than it used to be on the first release. If you do not know what you're doing, you will die much much faster.

You fail at basic math.

50*2*6000 = 600,000, not 60,000. Being off by an order of magnitude is rather significant....

How much does that change things? Seriously.

Let's be generous about the math and say that 5% of GW sales (not customers) can be attributed to pvp players. GW sales of all 3 chapters combined is 3 million. Let's say each sale is $50.

.05 * 3,000,000 * 50 = $7,500,000

{For contrast, since 95% of purchases are made by pve'ers

.95 * 3,000,000 * 50 = $142,500,000}

In the videogame industry, typically 15-20% of the revenue goes back to the developers. So what they get from pvp'ers is .20 * 7,500,000 = $1,500,000

Again, bear in mind, these figures are pretty generous.

According to http://www.cesspit.net/drupal/taxonomy/term/30, Arenanet's operate (sic) costs are about US$9m/year. Guild Wars (Prophecies) itself cost ~US$16m, including marketing costs.

Let's say that Factions and Nightfall cost about 5 million each to make (probably a very low estimate). So total costs of all chapters is 16 + 5 + 5 = $26 million.

2 years of operating costs is 9 * 2 = $18 million.

Total costs = 26 + 18 = $44 million

According to my estimates, PvP covered about 1.5 million of that cost. Over the lifetime of GW, has it cost just $1.5 million to maintain pvp with skill balances, testing, bandwidth, tournaments, etc.? I highly doubt it.

The OP's point still holds.

Did I say otherwise? (Seriously)

Calling it "generous" when the math is off by a factor of 10 is anything but. It's not as insignificant as he made it out to be. (If we used his math, your number would be 150,000 instead of 1,500,000, a rather large difference.)

Actually, yours was one of the few posts disputing the math that actually had a good point. I apologize if I came off as being overly critical. A group that makes up < 5% of the playerbase and requires a good deal of maintenance isn't going to get the love it deserves unless it can increase its ranks.

The outreach effort by Tiyuri is a very good step in that direction, imo.
