It's hard for inexperienced monks to learn not to "make red bars go up" in HA, since there's 8+ people to heal, walls, people breathing down your neck in vent, and whatnot. Imo, it's better to learn in RA, in fact, before you even bother HAing try get at least Glad or Fierce. With 4 players it's far easier to actually look at whats happening and prot accordingly. Saying that, it's pretty weird going from 4v4 > 8v8, but you'll manage. Gl.

No, just giving my view on that particular playstyle. Since they're trying to get their fame off me when I HA, I feel entitled to comment.

Of course; however, it would seem you're flipping from general to personal to general and so on . You made your post seem like it was more about fact and not personal opinion too .

Best enjoyed for you, you mean then . Not always others. Plus... People get their fun from different things =P. Some find it more fun winning - some people believe gimmicky builds are the way to win. Sorry if I was debating what you said and not what you thought.

To thread starter:

Me and my friend will help if you have a group going or whatever. We play in any groups now. Though I don't want to be involved in some lame stuff. I don't mind the rank of group etc. We play most things but I think we will monk for your group .

Rank8+ = Rank 8 Hero (title from winning battles in Heroes Ascent)
Vent>Ts because Ventrilo has better sound quality
I would suggest starting out in American Districts because your more likely to find a group there if your unranked

Vent has better sound quality and lags less. They are talking about hero title. To get started with groups, you probably need a guild. To start learning PvP, you probably need to start in RA.

My advice? Monk in non-gimicky groups. I started out as a monk, no friends list no guild no experience, much like you i suppose. At that time IWAY was rampant and my favorite pve char, the elementalist wasnt used at all. so i had to use my monk. best thing to ever happen to me really, as far as HA goes. Couple reasons it was good:

Monks have the hardest job on the team (most teams anyways) so if you master monks you can handle ungodly pressure as other chars.

Monks have to actually KNOW how the build functions and why it works/doesnt, not just their roll. Reason for this is because often times monks must prioritize who gets the heal/prot. If youre running an anti-melee necro and the opposing team has 4 melee chars, you better believe that necro is getting the sb before the sf ele when that time comes. Good monks prioritize... *btw, priority #1 is yourself and your fellow monks 95% of the time in my experience*

Everyone always needs a monk. Warriors, dervs, sins, eles, mesmers, rits, paras, rangers, and necros come in and out of the meta depending on skill balances, fotm's, etc, but monks will always be needed in some form in the meta. so if youre awesome at ele and the meta shifts into an ele-hating environment youre skrewed... but if you know how to monk you can still gain fame that way until the ele is bumped back in.

enjoy my $0.02

Yeah I like monk because all those pve starting groups like to have monks for their mission+bonus, especially for HA where I like to do the bonus in hall of heroes too. And when you're monking, people usually don't give you as much crap for being in bad groups...=)

well.. on this case. just play ha often and just see what people are running and there are 3 choices (either run the meta, invent anti meta, or just come up with brand new batch of build..) the choice is up to you of course =)

You got to be joking if your telling him to find a group in AD 1
- this guy could be euro
- AD 1 has hardly anyone, he wont learn anything by playing in random invite groups

No offence to the guy who started the thread sounds like your over exagerating in everything. Sorry just my opinion
Heroes ascent= hero (sounds kinda obvious)
The rest pretty much covered
Gl with HA

Ele's were extremely popular... Airspike? Hi?

...Rubbish. A warrior will have to order team about, call spikes, select the correct target, know what the enemy team is doing and why. A monk doesn't have to be as aware. Granted the monk has to be aware (if you're protting you'll want to know who to pre-prot, basic example) but I wouldn't say as aware at all times.

You and your fellow monks were probably standing in the wrong place then...

Ok, you mentioned IWAY being extremely popular. Tell me what the monk did in IWAY? Or how about Vim? Bloodspike? Rt spike?

Monk might have been used as a secondary in most builds, but if you look back so was ele. I remember when everyone was like 'let's take WBS!'

If you're awesome at ele you'll be awesome at other classes too. Just like if you're awesome at warrior you'll be a good assassin.

I take it IWAY was never META; regardless, wasn't your first statement kind of saying avoid the Meta anyway?

Quote:

I would say decent melee players are needed in HA. Then again someone who isn't bright enough to teach himself what rank they're asking for won't ever be good at anything.

So you think a PVE player leading a team with one good monk has a high success rate?

Or do you think a warrior caller telling everyone what to do, making the instructions clear and monitoring the game has a higher success rate?

I think the latter -especially- for newbies because no one knows how to play their class generally.

@ JBwarrior:

I think your main problem is like the rest of us (dutch people).

Tips:

-Stay away from HA on busy nights (when its evening in the netherlands, after 23:00 our time all American 1337 guilds play HA).

-Join a guild wich is PVP/PVE. Better for the fun because i like pve and pvp. But main reason is because you will have friends in your guild that will play HA.

-Try to make friends that like HA. If your team have a build that is nice try to perfect that build.

-Play much RA to learn basics and to learn counters from other proffesions.

I think there is much more but its time to sleep now lol

Thanks for the tips, but what do you mean by "1337"?

EDIT: I wrote a post explaining "1337" and then I got the feeling your question might be rhetorical... well if I asked that question, it would be rhetorical... so I blushed in embarrassment... and deleted it.

Btw, are you going to be sharing PvP builds in the forum once you've got it all figured out (which shouldn't take you very long)? I really enjoy your posts on PvE builds. I've learned some good stuff from them. Thanks!

Just wanted to point out that that's nonsense. Noob time is before 19.00 GMT, but Americans going online is the least of your worries. Just look at the favor messages to see who's winning.

To start out in HA, I recommend taking the path of least resistance.

1. Start playing in 8v8 HA right away, don't waste time in random arenas.

2. While some groups in international districts may appear to be unforgiving in their assessment of your build or individual player skill, you will learn more from playing with them than with groups in the local region.

3. Try playing a monk. I started out with just a pve monk character, I had no guild, no fame, nothing. I found it very easy to find groups in a short period of time--many so-called "balanced" teams look for 3 monks these days, and you can try your hand at each type (RC, SOD, LOD)

4. Play IWAY if you get the chance. Play ritspike. Play SF spike. Play paraway. Play zergway. Play ranger spike. Play blood spike. Play each one 2-3 times, you will learn how they work, why they work and why they may fail in the long run with varying map objectives.

Have fun, above all...

The difference is small. The quality of sound mostly depends on the server and the codecs! And many newbs tend to use crappy codecs on their TS servers, while Vent servers always have a good codec.
Vent almost always has less lag than TS, but it also depends on the server. Also in Vent you can adjust each person's volume separately, maybe you can do it in TS too but I didn't find it.
I don't care which one to use.
BTW, Nice name :P
