I was being sarcastic, a pvp pack should have been released when factions was released, not many people wanna invest $100-200 just to get started so this might have actually bring in some new players. Too bad it's about a year and a half too late..

You made it sound as if you thought of it as an accomplishment.

My apologies, it was meant to sound as an insult to the current ladder format...

smurfing has been around since 2005, and it was actually way worse back then than it is now.

It's mostly pugging or testing/fooling around anyway. Not having to wait for 20 mins is pro

Also you can't have multiple GvG's going at once, so if you have more than 8 players who want to GvG at the same time the smurf/second guild is a way to let other have a game.

In 2005 you could have multiple teams playing at the same time...

That was SO COOL!

No serious guild has enough players for this really, competitive guilds rarely have >10 active players.

Yeah but "serious guilds" don't care about the ladder, so you don't find them smurfing as much as the top 500 guilds.

I think smurfing, in its current form is acceptable. Even if its frustrating to take a -3 off a guild with a rating of 1000 who happen to be EW in disguise, at least you are getting experience playing top players.

What happens to a smurf guild when they get up to the top 100 though? Does it get dropped for a new one? If that is the case, that is more cause for a ladder reset.

Typically, it gets sold.

And B-Spiked down 100-200 ranks, then sold for a much lower price.

Yep, so you won' find em smurfing in a guild below a 1,200 rating.

SoG and eE are very serious guilds. That's why you don't see them smurfing or caring about their ladder rank!

It is axiomatic that by far the fastest way to learn anything is to play with/against the best people out there - this is true in fighting games, in FPS, in martial arts, etc. It doesn't matter if you get destroyed in seconds - you see how they're destroying you, which allows you to figure out two things: 1) how to avoid being destroyed in the future, and 2) how to destroy others. You can't learn by playing against people of your own level, because they suck just as much as you. You'll win more often, but you won't learn a damn thing.

The only time playing top players becomes a waste of time is when you go in there just trying to win, and not trying to learn anything - in other words, being handed a great opportunity and promptly squandering it.
Interesting axiom. If you're ever in Toronto I'd like to invite you to step on the mat with me to see just how wrong you are. After you regain conciousness and limp away the only thing you will have learned is not to play out of your league.

I'm no stranger to martial arts training, trust me. The higher the level of your competition, the faster you improve. You might not learn anything the first time you get destroyed, but regular practice with the top fighters will teach you things that you could never, ever learn through practice with your peers.

If you're really a martial artist, consider: which helps your training more - fighting people who are just as good (or as bad) as you, or people who are much better than you? I think that if you seriously consider the question, rather than come up with a knee-jerk answer just to argue with me on a forum, you'll agree that fighting the sensei is a much faster path to improvement.

Fighting your instructor on a serious match will probably not help you improve much. In martial arts, you get instructions and training from him/her along with possible matches. Normally you don't fight against him/her though but rather a sparring partner. I'd throw your words back at you. If you are really a martial artist, how often does your instructor decide to kick a student's ass on the first day if you had no previous or very little training?

No, you don't learn much if you drop down on the mat after one hit other than, "Damn, I didn't see it coming" or "I should have guarded there," only to guard there and get thrown the next time etc. etc.

Yes, you will be able to pick up pointers but quite frankly, you are better off gaining experience from fighting people slightly better or on your level than fighting someone way above and having no chance. Why? Because the pointers you pick up from fighting high caliber people may simply be improper or incorrect as to cause as much potential injury to yourself as your opponent. That's why you have an instructor and the instructor just doesn't throw you to the wolves repeatedly. There are learning experiences to be had if you are beaten but only with proper guidance. How many guilds have that outside of forums? Do all starting gvg groups get that guidance with higher rankers looking into their matches personally?

That being said, it's just a game and honestly, I could care less about the rating but I don't think rolling a team in under a few minutes is anywhere near beneficial to them though yes, I do agree that fighting better teams does show where you are weak. My problem lies with some of the people posting as if they were doing a service/favour to all those they roll over in GvG. Those guilds already know that they are weak in all given areas as they just started or are doing it on a casual basis and need experience. If GW was just beginning again, this would probably result in a movement towards dolyak sig/stance/healing tanks and the thought that they work out ok. After all, the pointers they picked up is that they were dying too quickly so obviously, if they don't die as quickly, they must be doing something right... amirite?

tl;dr - The PVP community helped create dolyak stance tanks. THANKS GUYS FOR TEACHING US PUGS THE REAL WAY OF HOW TO PLAY GUILD WARS. I WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FARM BALTH KEYS WITHOUT YOU. I GOT MY 100k+ OVER 9000 ECTOS SKIN.

Now wouldn't that be a kicker? All I've been getting is creme brulees and the like. Went back to selling keys since I'm in the poor man's house. Offtopic though.

What about those who want to GVG because they want to be more relaxed and not care about losing?
