From personal expierence playing with players who don't use a mic, this will lead to disaster. For a discussion I guess its fine, but for actual play, it should be avoided at all costs.

Agreed... we have been there you really need a mic.

However this is not for battle, this is for a (fun) seminar style learning session. So a mic isn't essential. However speakers so you can hear the speaker would certainly be advantagous :P

Just making a note that of someone is not really comfortable in speaking on TS to a bunch of strangers the option is always there for them to also use Local chat in Guild Hall as well. Either way the message still comes across.

Since you guys are Euro, times might not match up, but if you see me online, let me know. I'll most likely be free.

The biggest thing you (and the guild) have to remember is that you're playing to have fun and get better. Sure, you can have a goal (top 1000 or something), but don't let it blind you. Once reaching your goals, don't forget this is all for fun. Make sure your players are still selfless and enjoying it as they were before. Otherwise the guild will blow up, speaking from experience :O

thanks mate... good advice.. will keep on eye on this.

Had problems in the past with different levels of expectations and seriousnous. Really want to stress this is for fun. We will be looking into developing a GvG ladder guild with some goals like top 100 top 500 etc though scouting players form these GvG training nights with potential, however thats a whole different venture :P

Hi, I'm the author of the GVG guide you see up top. I would love to give you a brief intro to GVG in exchange for some feedback on some of the planned developments for the next update of my guide.

My IGN is:

I Heal Morons.

Let me know in game or on this website. I'm on most nights.

a few things to have a bigger chance to win and develop your GVG's in overal:

- all members need vent (+ working mic) Communication is the most important

- dont run a imba build like hex way or thumperway. You will win some matches for sure but its way better to lose some matches with a good balanced build and gain alot of experience. And in good GVG's most of the lame builds get owned by good balance spiking.

- All read those treads about position. Where you stand in a GVG is also very important. Learn all the maps and running routes.

- Run builds wich are comfortable with the players who play them. Dont let someone who ussualy plays monk playing a warrior. If you have alot of melee people in your team make a build wich lays on melee pressure or something.

- Spike targets down if everyone knows how a spike works. Go through this before starting a GVG

Then as you are a starting GVG guild i recomment to play a build wich is something like condition pressure. Still you need skills for it and you can also spike. But plz dont tun lame builds like Sway, Hexway or Spiking (necro or rit) builds) (you ruine the community by playing those builds :P)

IMO a good balanced build is the best build in GVG. But a good balanced build takes a lot of experience.

And experience + good teamwork is the key to win a good GVG match. And when you win a good GVG match with balanced it feels really good .

Skarkees.

ps: sorry for bad english

  • People wanting to take part in the GvG trainging nights are to meet in the OCG1 guild hall at 8.15. Training will start at 8.30 sharp.
  • You will need to have Teamspeak. I will post the details of our server closer to the time.
  • Anyone from outside the Guild wanting to take part please contact me in game and i will send you a guest invite on the day.
  • Mature and Courteous players need only attend. I have no tollerence for rudeness or show boats. We are here to learn, not grow our egos.
  • Our guild has a ban on the word "noob" so please refrain from using

Structure
  • Faction farming - in teams of 4 I would like to head off to Zashien Challenge and Zashien Elite to hit the daily quota for Balthazar Faction farming. For those making the transition from PvE to PvP gaining this faction to help unlock skills for builds can be invaluable.
  • Guild Hall Overview - running through the various landmarks and important areas in various Guild Halls. For our first Training session I would like to go over our own guild hall map, the Isle of Meditation.
  • Target Calling practice - the basics of calling targets, and following calls.
  • GvG terms and language - some common terms and names used in GvG and what they mean.
  • Guest Speaker - Introduction to GvG.
  • GvG Battle (fun match for those who have never played GvG before to get an idea of everything mentioned in practice hopefully we will have enough for a scrimmage if not then we will do a ranked battled - I am unconcerned about OCG's rank)
OK Everyone.......

Great News!!!!!!! - Our first GvG Training night (Tuesday the 23rd of October) has our first Guest Speaker confirmed. Daek Maelstrom (author of "The Beginner's Guide to GvG") has kindly offered to get the ball rolling for us and offer us some of his hints and tips for GvG. This is an ideal speaker for our first ever GvG training session and I am sure he will have allot to offer everyone that attends.
  • You will need Teamspeak in order to hear his presentation. You will not need a mic however it is encouraged (as when playing GvG you will be required to have Teamspeak and a Mic)
  • You will need to be in the OCG1 guild Hall at 8.15 as we will be starting at 8.30 sharp. No excuses, if your late you will miss out (sorry but I have to be strict in timing when I am having people from outside of the guild investing there own personal time to help us out then I don't to be waiting for players to turn up)
  • You are encouraged to have a PvP char (although not a requirement) to help learn about PvP weapons and Amour)
please come prepared to learn and with an open mind to PvP, no show boats or egos please - I do not have the patience for these people
  • I must stress this is a fun exercise and not to be taken to seriously. I wont people to be serious about learning but not about winning or losing. This is hear to help anyone that has ever wondered or thought I wonder what its all about

I will also be accepting attendees from outside the guild so anyone who would like to attend is welcome. Please register you interest on our forum make sure you state your IGN and I will send you an guest invite that day to come along. I will not be charging anything for this event, and will not be asking for any money to cover invites etc. all I ask is you turn up with the right attitude and show respect to all involved. Hoping for a great night.

Thanks All.

well our first GvG Training session took place on Tuesday the 23rd and WOW.. what a success. a HUGE!!!!! thank you to Daek for coming along and speaking to us. His presentation was coherent and articulate throughout and gave a well structured talk. WE all took alot out of it and it has generated HUGE interest for GvG inside and outside the guild. Everyone that attended learnt a great deal and really help increase our confidence in playing a few battles. As a guild it has generated interest far beyond what I had hoped for, We have GvG every night this week since last Sunday.. We have gone from a guild struggling to find the last 2 or 3 players to make a team to having enough players to rotate, even play scrimmage matches in guild, and still having people being left out, has been really really good.

A few quotes form feedback on our wesite:

"He was encouraging to players just starting out in GvG, and I think by listening to him we all had a boost in our confidence at the end"

"I participated in the first GvG training night and all in all it was definitely a positive experience. The guest speaker was very thorough and calm it was easy to understand what he was talking about"

"Excellent speaker, actually. I though he was going to say some interesting things but - wow - I was really surprised. He is very organized and has the subject well under control. And highly systematized. I was really, really very impressed."

"Was FANTASTIC! Speaker was great, TS was good, wish i could have joined in the after speech battles ^^"

"Id like to congratulate our guest speaker who really did a professional job on introducing the basics of playing GVG, an excellent job"

So yeah great work and great fun was had by all. THANKS!!!!! (anyone wanting to join in please visit out forum - and let us know via the thread or contact me in game IGN= Eva Vonruss and I will send you guest invite for the days we hold training)

I will be uploading a podcast very shorty (just waiting on files to be uploaded) and I will post a link for anyone to have a listen.

I will post again here with the info for the next Guest Speaker - Podcast upload link etc.

I am now looking for another guest Speaker to be able to perhaps go over Tactic's used in GvG or Developing a Team Build in GvG. Can anyone help us out there? Let me know please, thanks to all those that have help allready

Most people are nervous about GvG because they have never done it before. You got to make sure, before even thinking about being a top rated guild, that it's mainly for fun. If you want to get serious, tell them at the time you want to get serious. If they believe that it's all for fun, and rating doesn't matter (which it never should until you find a successful build that everyone can run and enjoys running) they will want to participate. Make sure that you and everyone else is kind to each other. People mess up, even top 100 guilds have someone mess up, which could effect the game, so there is never a reason to get angry about it.

My advice is to be kind to everyone and just have fun. And prove it.

hey!

i have a new guild that we are trying to teach to get better at GvG and would love to scrimmage against you on saturdays (or fridays). were still starting out and only have 7 or 8 players with some outside friends who would be willing to have some fun gvg practice. were in the same sort of dilemma as you with the whole "im afraid to let down my team" sort of attitude.

pm me about it if youre interested!

Sounds good!

We are GvG'ing every night at this stage... normally from around 8pm GMT. Message me in game if you ever want a scrimmage.

If anyone from your guild wants to attend our GvG Training nights please just ask me. Anyone is welcome, we are improving in leaps and bounds since we started, really is paying off!

I don't have much to offer but moral support as I'm sure there are more qualified players who can help with your GvG training sessions. I'm just glad to see work being done to help foster the development of GvG for new people. I really hope this has a positive influence on potential new GvGers sitting on the fence as I think its great for PvP to get some new blood.

Anyway, I applaud what you're doing and the effort you're putting in.

cheers

I am in a very similar situation atm, being in a very large alliance that is basically just 1 giant guild. We recently released a new guild made just for gvg in the alliance and i am one of the people in charge of making the team of 8, desighning the teams build, and getting it up and rolling. Even tho our allaince has about 300 people we are a pve alliance so getting the 8 was very hard, and other then me and 2 others noone has any gvg experience.

I know i want to run a more balanced build, and i have very experienced monks, and frontline warriors. The problem i have now is what i am going to do to make these newbies good, especially since none of them can play mesmer.

Tough world out there heh, and i totally understand you when u talk about noone wanting to gvg, i mean even our weekly scrims only get maybe 14 ppl...

Right well after a brief break to give everyone a chance to spend some time with family and friends our Gv G Training nights are back up and running for the last few weeks. They have been a great success really helping interest from within the Guild for GvG and also helping our Guild develop relationships with other Guilds both Experienced in GvG and new to GvG.

I am looking for some new Guest speakers to come and have a chat to our Alliance and Guild about GvG. IS there anyone out there that could perhaps came and have a chat with us and tell us about there guild and experiences and share some of your hints and tips.

Some topics I would like to see going over:

Dealing with splits and Ganks
Target Calling and Start Calling
Advanced GvG Tactics,
GvG and the current Meta
Setting up a New GvG Ladder Guild

If you think you could spare and hour of your time to come and talk to us please let me know via this forum, our forum (www.ocggw.com) or whisp me in game (IGN= Eva Vonruss) IF you would like to simply share with us your own experiences and hints and tips that would be great also.

I thank the GvG community for all there help so far and in advance to all those offering to help in 2008 Happy Hunting!
