Well, many people in a random forum

but jeez, comparing to other games I played, GW is still better. Hit by 1234321 arrows is not fun.

Currently only PvP. I started playing Ragnarok Online, where PvE is much better than in GW, as it rewards both skill AND time, not just time.

I still play it only and ONLY because I cannot stop playing :S
PvE has no challenges left for me. Only PvP is still interesting, but it is hard to find a group who wants to take me since i am as yet rankless. Which annoys me terribly, since I know a lot of really bad high rank players. (not saying i am good, au contraire, but at least i know i suck at pvp :P)

First off, lol at using Maslow's needs hierarchy, other than self actualisation (even by his own words) not being a need everyone/anyone/most people achieve, there's also serious doubt what would that even be and how would it be measured. The other four "need categories" are fine, but self actualisation just ruins the whole credibility of it.
Anyways, that silly theory aside, currently I play GW only because of the friends I have there, some of which I know IRL as well. It's basically become a chat program with other random fun stuff to do. It'd be much better if all of the people I regularly play GW with lived next door, but as it is some of them are even in the thousands of kilometres away so meh, I'll take this "lower" level of socialisation over none at all.

being able to crossdress and act like a girl through my characters, but then pass it off as trying to be manly because i like staring at a three dimensional pixelated ass because they are better than real girls. also to flame people, and winning lots of thumb drives.

playing any form of team pvp with friends on vent is still fun, despite all the gimmicks (and the state of GVG atm).. and the fact that my comp is too outdated to run anything but GW

Because guild wars is the perfect strategy game.

Oh, yeah, and because I can tell others they're bad.

I talk to people, and play some HB; due to flaws in the game, talking>playing.

There is a certain rush in competitive PVP that's hard to duplicate. When you've broken your opponent's defense and you start to make that push, that critical point where you know you're going to win and nothing they can do to stop it... it is a huge exhiliration.

My guild / alliance doesn't do TA anymore (it's all PVE and sporradic AB), and I do miss it (RA is a poor substitute but better than nothing), but I stick around because I love the people and personalities. And truly, there is considerably less drama and friction in a PVE guild than in a PVP guild. But that's understandable too, because PVP brings out the competitive flame in anyone who's serious about it. But ego clashes are never fun to be in or around.

I don't get the same satisfaction out of doing stuff in PVE that I do in PVP. But I still PVE some when the mood strikes.

I play Guild Wars because it's free monthly, it runs great on an aging computer, and it's easy (in some ways) to just up and get into the heat of battle.

Oh, and I love the death cry of Monks. I live for that sound.

Friends or the few people I know. Besides that I don't feel any urge to play this game, so I am mostly on my desktop.

I started playing it as more of an interest in the gaming/business model, but I 'still' play it because it is incredibly fun and in all honesty, a tower of achievement.

Despite all the f-ups with questionable decisions, when they get things right, the experience is virtually unmatched across the entire industry. Not many games can say that...

(I hope you guys are reading this thread, as this is your stroke-shot ^_^. )

The first 4 months that I played I'd say were for Esteem needs and, strictly playing PvE at the time, my main goal was achievement.

When I branched into PvP, I played mainly to fulfill the belonging need. Comradery and friendship was what kept me playing. Of course winning was vital, but I could go win at other games. What kept me playing GW (which came with the opportunity cost of not really playing other games) for so many months was making new friends through the multiplayer aspect.

What drives me now to not play Guild Wars? Playing it at an unhealthy level (i.e. 2900 hours in 20 months) to the exclusion of my family and other more healthy activities. There's something incredibly addictive about MMORPGs and I can't pinpoint exactly what it is. Giving up the game allowed me to start exercising again which helped me lose 105 pounds in a 34 week span. Seeing how this game enabled me to take my life in a direction I wasn't liking, I can understand now why there are people who compare some video games to drugs -- a comparison that used to sharply offend me. My desire to design, develop, and market my own video games is now dead and replaced by other goals.

Still, I don't regret the time I spent playing GW and cherish the friends I made from playing GW PVP (you know who you are).
