Default Brand new to GW. Are PVP characters Gimped?

Just wondering, If I create a pvp character will I be able to at some point be able to compete? To get into serious PVP do I have to level an RP character to max?

I just want to know because I love pvp healing in other games but I want to RP a Dervish.

Thanks.

No, you can create a PvP only character, and there will be virtually no difference, you will just have to unlock the skills/items/armor/weapons in a different way.

If you have the time though, I recommend playing a RP character up to 20, so you get the feeling of the class.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that you cannot play any of the missions/quests with the PvP only character, just making sure that is understood.

hmm.. if i understand your question correctly, then no. you do NOT have to use a PvE character to PvP.

and YES, PvE characters DO have access to the PvP part of GW

PvP characters cant be as pretty as RP characters, but whatever they still hit just as hard, even if they are ugly as hell.

if anything, pvp chars are superior statistically to rp chars. pvp chars have access to every skill and every upgrade that you've ever unlocked on your account, while rp chars only have skills and equipment that you've bought.

even after investing well over 500k gold into my rp ranger, it still can only play a handful of builds because of lack of equipment and skills. (granted, i invested most of it in fancy armor. that's why you'll want to use an rp char over a pvp char in the first place)

Agreed. Especially for monks, since I'm not going to customize all my staffs/wands, they'll be doing 20% less damage when I decide to wand

Pvp chars are also easier to delete and re-name to avoid friendlist camping.

the only real differences between PvE and PvP characters are::

1) uglier armor to start off with
2) PvP characters require almost no time invested to make them do whatever you want them to do.. i.e. have the right armor for PvP (GvG, HA,TA,RA,HB,CM)
3) PvE characters ARE THE BEST WAY TO GO to get familiarized with the game.

IF you just bought the game and want to get serious about PvP, you must first look into PvE and learn the basics here. study the skills and their effects, watch what other people use, GET IN A GOOD GUILD ,and yeah... thats it.

but yeah there arent differences between the "best pve character" and the "best pvp character" they do the same damage, have the same armor ratings, all that stuff.. its just way easier to make a pvp character instead of slaving over farming for hours, buying stuff for days, all that jazz.

You can't rule out that there are still unconditionals from when the game first started being used by some top players, who obviously started the game in PvE.

You could then go on and say that monks have an advantage with those 15AL req7 shields. They are very easy to get and yet you still find those top players preferring their Tormented Shield. The effect these items have on the competitiveness of a character is minimal. And id rather be able to change my build and equipment when needed on demand rather than take advantage of these items. But saying that its always good to have at least one RP character kitted out for PvP.

Did they happen to be playing Mo/Ws?

That's why you're nub

My wands/staff are customized, as well as my spears! That's why you hit for 1's and I hit for 2's!

My monk can play anything she wants at this point, as can my warrior, but it is very expensive. Expect hundreds of thousands of gold investment to get an RP character as the same level as a PvP only.

That said, r7 shields are PvE items

Unconditionals are way better than 15AL req7 shields.

If I ever run req7 or 8 tactics, I'd be using a 15/7 or 16/8 shield instead of my tormented. I'm curious to hear which "top players" still use their tormented shield while running 7/8 tactics, so that I can make fun of them ^_^

Having 15 as opposed to 8 armor is pretty big.

With that said, there's nothing stopping you from using those special items with a PvP-only character. Just make sure you don't accidentally delete them

At least it allowed my PvP ele to use my healing wand+focus when I didn't have enough slots for more PvP items :S

i acctually got a friendly reply from holy ZOMGWTF

it must because we are in the realm of the gladiator's arena.

anyways back on topic. Yeah of course 15/16 AL makes a great difference opposed to the normal 8. My point was mainly that people choose not to run Mo/W for the extra defence, so it is rarely seen and so it doesnt have a big affect on high end PvP.
And on the note of which top 100 player it was. I cant remember names but i have seen it more than once that a Mo/W play with Tormented shield although it was a while back.

TA now is a whole different topic

You can have 16AL r7 tact shields and r8 command shields, they are rare with good stats but still about and do make a considerable difference when you meet the req.

Theres also +1 attribute shields which are useful.

OK that's all I was getting at. People are only running Tormented because they aren't running Mo/Ws; in the right meta those extra points will make a difference, and I'd expect top guilds to be exploiting it.

Anyways even in such a situation, if you have a 'perma' pvp slot you can donate most pve items to said character and customize in the guild hall.

PvE has a lot more options, but not far. What I'd recommend is probably making a PvE character to 20 because you can still do the same amount of things a PvP character can in about just 20 or 15 commited hours, you're lucky its not 70 hours...

PvE also gives you a lot of different types of armors, weapons, and stuff you can choose from.

Please don't take PvP advise from PvErs. You should prolly start playing the game in PvE because it is easier to learn the basic function of skills that way, but when you start PvPing I highly recommend using PvP chars all the time, at least until you have a significant enough grasp of PvP to know exactly what equipment is required for each role.
