Default 3/22/08 - Balance a Skill a Day - Chain Lightning

Current:
10/3/10
Target foe and up to two other foes near your target are struck for 10...70 lightning damage. This spell has 25% armor penetration and causes Exhaustion.


A good old skill, nerfed in the Summer of 05, after Air Spike dominated PvP. For those who don't know *notices there is like, 1 person* there is also a time between each jump, so factor that in.

Anything we could do to maybe bring this baby back into the spotlight, without being ridiculous?

Make it 2 second cast, maybe 1? meh, exhaustion is the real killer, but making the energy cost only 5 might help a teensy bit.

This was good only because everyone was a noob back then. So I would increase the damage and make the time it takes to get from one person to another much faster.

Just change the casting time to 2, similar to the Deathly Swarm change.


Though I doubt it seeing use anymore because of one simple aspect -- it's a spammable damage exhaustion spell you'll be wanting mostly on spike assists, when you can take Lightning Orb instead for single-target DPS.

I really doubt this skill being any good unless overpowered.

needs to have damage comparable to pre buff orb. It has high cost, LONG cast, and long recharge, it needs to be worth it

Where are you seriously thinking that a skill like this would be used? When has random AoE damage been useful? How is this going to even think of competing with Lorb on an air eles bar when the most important part is the spike assist?

The only place that I can even image this being used is on altars, but it's not like you see Air eles in HA either way.

Basically, this skill is either bad because noone cares about random unfocused damage or this skill is way to good because you can set up a spike team to instagib 3 people at once.

Wrong. This skill was god because it did 130-140 dmg to 3 targets. There was also no jump like there is now. 1 spike would instantly wipe out half your team. I know because I was there.

My changes
Reduce to 2 seconds cast. Remove the exhaustion. Each jump damage is reduced by 25% unless the target has cracked armor.

Random AOE damage is what has made Savannah Heat shitters useful since day one. Problem is Chain Lightning doesn't have anything else to support it at that task, it's simply not very well-suited to what the line does.

You should hear me on vent when there is an bsurge on the other team...

Single target damage is pretty lousy except in spike builds. You could turn this into a pressure skill like immolate was on mblast bars

5 or 10 energy (best at 10 if higher damage)
5 recharge
Lower damage by a lot (20-70 maybe but these #s are prob to high)
Target foe is struck by this, if there is a nearby foe this spell is recast on that foe.

Make it similar to disease in that the same spell copy cant hit the same person more than once.

This will give air eles something to help punish crap positioning, which is why people run fire eles in the first place, without being retarded broken like rodgorts invocation was. Plus air eles dont have the emanage to constantly spam this

Well, they buffed Shock Arrow to help this, but its not as simple as Mindblast/Glowing Gaze as far as e-management.

I know its a little gimmickie, but:

Chain Lighting

10 2 15

Spell. Function changed to: Target foe is struck for 10..70...85 lightning damage. If target foe has cracked armor, up to two other foes near your target are also struck. This spell has 25% armor penetration. If you are not under the effects of an enchantment, this spell causes exhaustion.
