Default monks with shields

in pvp ive been seeing a lot of monks go around with no shields, and not even a warrior secondary. this may sound "noob" but do u get any armor bonus at all from a 16AR like maybe 3 or half armor?
-thanks

yes you get 8 al if you don't meet the attribute requirements and monks are advised to carry +10 armor for all the diferent types of damage so they can switch. this will ensure monks get at least 18(8 from no attrib meeted shield+10 from +10vs damage type) which is a lot better than normal weapon set when your not healing. so yes thats why monks carry shields eve though they aren't warriors

You only recieve the 16ar if you meet the req on the shield. You get half if you do not meet the rq. Most monks use shields for PvP for the +health and the +10ar^vs all damage types.
So if they were getting hit with a piercing type weapon, you would get 10ar.

its also possible to run 9 tactics and have a full armor shield, but most monks dont do this, and those that do are usually in TA. it is ineffective to sacrifce the points in monk attributes, but there is nothing wrong with it when working with a strong ZB bar, or a ballsy WoH bar.

They use this because you get the armor bonus of the shield, plus the conditional armor bonus (assuming you switched to the right +AL shield). This is basically used to mitigate the damage you're receiving, which is typically a warrior/derv bashing on your face. This makes you spend less energy healing yourself, and gives you a little extra protection from being spiked out.

they also use it to hide energy from mesmers and it;s also good to resurrect on a low energy set. plus, if you can monk on 30e and then when you need to, change to your 50e set with 40% chance to half cast time, then you will get less interrupts and then switch back to low every again.

it gets you used to not having a lot of energy and only healing whne you need to... ie. WoH or ZB when they are below 50% Hp like.

also, if youi die with your low energy set, when you get rezzed, it is better to start monking agani cuase you get more energy back than on your high set

I use a shield because it reduced pressure, and i just quick weapon swap when casting.

I'm pretty sure that people at the upper tiers of play equip shields because it makes them take less damage, not for the bling factor.

Summing it up:

1) Armor Bonus +8 (+10 vs. type of damage)
2) Energy hiding (E-Surge, E-Burn & before/after dieing)
3) Defensive skills ([[Shield Bash])
4) Vanity (it's all about the looks)

yah... i meant "to be" rezzzed.

my firm philosophy in GW is that monks never rez. even in PVE. let someone who is not so essential and doesn;t have to ensure the survival of the team to rez. even my hero monks don;t rez. i give DPS or Flesh of Flesh to my heros.

unless you are in RA then no-one will rez. LOL

All reasons already mentioned. +18 armor is a godsend, particularly against pressure teams. Being able to monk in midset with only 35 energy is the mark of a good PvP monk. And Tormented Shields always look better than a Divine Symbol or some bullcrap similar.

Im really thinking why any people would do that. Seriously, if you need the enchant lengthening, you would swap to your prot staff. Or then you are like Polly and never ever weaponswap and just bang your head to the wall with trying to cast Aegis and Guardian on shieldset, good luck with Power Block. Not to mention that sometimes, especially when you are gathering DP, the extra 30 health is very important, sometimes it even saves you from being spiked.

Not just monks, but really everyone should have several shields and the ability to switch to them when needbe, even dervishes and hammer warriors. Swapping weapons to reduce damage is far better than spending skill slots and energy to reduce damage.

Also, I'd weapon swap so I can get both the +27 energy and 18 armor.

I heard monks can swap weapon sets to maximize efficiency. If you want to be a better player i'd recommend doing this as it can only help in the long run.

If you want to be lazy and sit on one weapon set or ignore using damage reducing sets you're only hurting your team, not mine.

Closing because too many bad players giving wrong information (LULZ I LIK MI ENERGY+27 WIF -1 REGEN BECUZ ITZ KEWLER TAN ARMER) and too lazy to keep coming back and deleting them. The posts that are undeleted generally offer good advice, so listen to that.

Just to correct this:

Reduction = (1 - (0.5 ^ (AL / 40)) * 100

8 AL is 13%
