Default INTEREST CHECK: Casual Community thing, Guild Wars instead of Build Wars (info in OP)

OK so basically I already told Bill about this but I was sorta bouncing an idea around in my head randomly whilst slightly drunk (wow, it must be good!!) and tired, but here goesss.

The last excellent PvP thing I can think of off the top of my head that isn't some minor feature like a title (lol, those aren't excellent by any means anyways) or an emote, is probably the Costume Brawl, last Halloween.

Why?

Insanely casual. Anyone could jump in, grasp what needed to be done. Hardcore PvErs were even jumping in and splitting naturally.

However, my idea was to somehow take this idea and expand it a bit. Keep it casual, make it jump in (near BYOB jump in if needed), make everything easily outlined, but instead of limiting people to one bar (something that while it makes the game more accessible, sorta goes against the inherent build strategy of the game) make a list of skills that are allowed.

So basically, a 5v5 tournament, probably once or twice a month if people rather like the idea. Standard GvG rules, only with 5 people vs 5 people, and a certain limited amount of skills. I chose 5 because it's way easier to get 5 people and 5 people setup than it is 8, plus its possible to split etc still, so its great. Plus 5 just feels right ever since I tried the Costume Brawl really.

The skill selection (which would be refined and discussed a lot before each game) would be skills that promote active, skillful play, and stay as far away from Build Wars as possible.

Overall objective of this would to not only get something casual and "fun" for PvPers (you know, a diversion, a break, a whatever.) but to give PvErs something that they can do and maybe learn the intricacies of high end PvP in a mini "sized-down" version, casually. If this gets really going, could even reward people gold/flames/zkeys too.

Just looking to see whose interested/comments/epic flames/ideas/etc.

ps: if a mod has a better title I'd luv it because I got nothing.

EDIT:
To further clarify, I'm talking about community people getting together to do this ourselves, not having Anet add such a thing.

I support. Leaving Costume Brawl as a holiday event despite its potential was what made me lose the last of my confidence in Arenanet.

Here's to hoping Anet's newer CR listens to you.

Well, the CR doesn't have to listen to me, this is more of a "community does it itself" type of thing like the Sealed Deck deal [kisu] is doing, or the GWG tournament, or the rawr cup, etc.

Sounds cool.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if ANet just added sealed deck support and left it at that. I thought they said they were testing systems to get that in place a few years back, but nothing seemed to have come from it.

Also-DarkNecrid do you play Akatsuki Blitzkampf?

Casual, random games would be fun. Keep 5 player teams and res-less pre-made bars, but give 3 or so pre-made bars per class, and shuffle/balance them around from time to time. Kinda like class-based combat. Locked bars prevent exploitation/griefing at the cost of customization and skill-fiddling, which sounds like good fun to me in the right setting.

Example skill bars:

Ice Ele
Shatterstone
Freezing Gust
Icy Stone
Shard storm
Blurred Vision
Aura of Restoration
Water Attunement
Glyph of Lesser Energy

Minion Necro
Barbs
Deathly Swarm
Blood of the Master
Taste of Death
Death Nova
Animate Flesh Golem
Animate Bone Minions
Rend Enchantments

Hammer Warrior
Forceful Blow
Heavy Blow
Crushing Blow
Mokele Smash
Lion's Comfort
"For Great Justice!"
Flail
Sprint

Thematically, each build isn't really able to spike by itself, and does more damage than it can heal. Each build has some healing skill, has only skills from their profession, and has no res (respawn is fast enough, I think). The bars themselves aren't the best by any stretch, but are definitely above average for most newbies to PvP. I guess another important part would be to let skills from all campaigns be playable, no matter what chapters you own.

Make sure no boring aspects of HvH play leak in, like over-defensive teams, abusive shadowstepping, or terra-tanking on shrines.

I specifically say why I'm having a pre-made list of skills, and not bars! Stuff that makes your bar for you like Ursan is bad for the game, and making your (and your allies) bars is a key skill and one of the funner more important parts of the game. It works for the Costume Brawl because it's a weekend event. This could maybe get more people interested in PvP which is why I'm thinking of having a skill list instead of pre-set bars. The stuff you mentioned wouldn't be in anyways, and would allow for player creativity. ;d

This would be kind of like...in M:TG tournaments they have formats that restrict cards based on set, this would be like but restricting it to cards that make for good gameplay instead of degenerative stuff/buildwars/etc.

I'm not saying it would be perfect the 1st time around tho, but then again not even there yet, just looking at interest. I want to try and get some PvErs to get into this too, and a lot of them love things that aren't metagame / cookie-cutter like sealed deck and random skills, sooo maybe could get some interest there.

The so called system to help put things in place were AT's, too bad they are nothing more than a place filled with horrible matchups, forfeits, and a time sink to get 20QP leading up to the only day that matters.

Always loved the Costume Brawl.

I would love a chance to play Guild Wars instead of Build Wars again.

Excellent!

I'm still working on finishing a good list of skills, so maybe later today or tomorrow I'll post what I got and maybe go from there, since there seems to be interest.

I miss sealed deck, was good times back when we used to scrim with it.

You could end up with some odd builds, well like stuff you generally see in RA.

But it made things challenging and fun.

Even setting up Phrophices only Skill sets sealed decks would be fun, OLD SCHOOL YO!

/signed, though I don't know if we are signing this or not or wahts going on really, maybe I should get drunk too, that typically solves many things, for a few hours at least.

Get everyone to get on and have a mini-tournament with this setup, basically.
