Setting aside all the RoF comparisons for a moment, what about Kiss? How does Patient compare to Kiss?
They're both efficient spot heals, but with different strengths and weaknesses. Patient Spirit casts faster but heals slower, while Kiss casts slower and heals faster (much faster when HCT specs).

So, if you wanted a second spot heal on your WoH bar, would you take Kiss or Patient (leaving RoF and Infuse out of the discussion for the time being)?

This topic is indeed after it was buffed from its old version to where it is now. Even after the update quite a few people said it was bad or mediocre (ie: so-so but not good enough to be taken)... Granted, the meta has shifted since then (obviously), but I think a part of it definitely has to do with the fact that it is a heal over time, a skill type of heals that just aren't effective in this game so people just seem to naturally hate them, in fact Patient Spirit is about the first skill that is a HoT that has become largely meta across all game types because it's actually effective. Even skills like [Spirit Light Weapon] only saw minimal play, although SLW is one of the better HoT's in the game, it's still pretty bad when there is better more IMMEDIATE options. Patient Spirit wins over other HoT's in the game because of its specific interaction with knockdowns, it's a strong heal, and it's quick ability to work through daze in a snap if need be. It's down sides obviously being its not immediate and if you don't communicate properly you can waste energy on overhealing. But both of those things can be fixed by communicating, so that's nothing too terrible. It's a lot better than it initially looked even after being buffed tbh. I remember thinking it was terrible too and not on par or even close to Prot's RoF and rarely used it for a couple days, but it's definitely a good skill now I think. Well balanced.

Patient is meta everywhere, I seem to remember a lot of people saying it was noob shit 6-7 months ago too over RoF but now everyone runs it. Same goes for cure hex and spotless mind that seemingly everyone said were shit skills.

a point to consider; it wasnt buffed by HB until way later i believe. i would prefer RoF on a WoH bar, which is practically the only other option for Patient use.

I think a lot of the hate had to do with the fact that it was an untested skill and people hadn't figured out how to use it yet. Once people got over the delayed healing, it actually turned out to be useful.

I disagree with calling it a "heal over time" though. It isn't. It's a regular spot heal that just has a delayed effect. While in most cases the difference is minimal because you just want to make a red bar go up, in some cases the difference is significant.

KD's are probably the biggest problem for monks in arenas, hence all the stance monks. 1 kd is usually pretty easy to deal with, but when they start being chained, it can become impossible to do anything about it. It's sometimes possible to cast patient between KD's if the warrior is slightly off on his quarterknocking. Quite often this makes the difference between death and a close call.

Patient Spirit can be timed to heal in the middle of a spike as well if used as a sort of "pre-heal". Timed well, it can act as a sort of ghetto infuse when used with WoH. This is especially useful since contemporary monk bars are usually a little light on condition removal and that means that you often end up having to heal over a deep wound rather than removing it.

Of course, there are the benefits listed previously as well such as a short cast time and a disposable cover enchant though the latter is much less useful in most situations.

Thread's just an example of how most people don't seem to actually know why skills are good.

Have to agree though that Patient isn't really a HoT. It's still a packet heal, it just takes as long as a sig of devotion to activate, but without the annoying casting time.

Notice how I cleverly avoided this entire thread as it was being discussed, since I was psychic and knew that everyone would one day use patient everywhere!

A skill that has been used on every 2 monk backline in the history of GvG is still being compared to a skill that has seen major use for less than a year.

This makes me sad.

i think it's mainly because people realized that the synergy between patient+RoF is stronger than 2xRoF, although it isn't dramatically stronger.

also, patient works as an excellent cover enchant/big heal on spikes, since it can eat a shatter and absorb the damage and save the big prot underneath it.
