Default Eles - How Integral Are They?

Title.

I had this discussion with an old guildy of mine. I'm curious to hear the community's thoughts.

FC Mesmers are also included under this category.

No Flaming Plz. Kthx.

They're very useful, but I wouldn't say integral.
Most use Eles to fill in support roles and gaps in a team, while adding a bit to damage.

Can't beat a good ele when you get into those mobs. But as always in pve, it's the team that makes the difference!

Thanks for clearing this up, but not sure if the GvG subforum is the right place to drop this kinda info ...

As to your original question:
I still find Ensigns classic thread informative and that includes the discussion following:

Why Nuking Sucks.

As in the current Meta that translates into:
Ele's
B-Surge with wow or rend;
Mindshock (see above);
Mindblast with Distortion (as run by [nH] at times ... only DPS oriented ele build currently I know of);
SF-Flagger (brave build);

FC Mes
FC Water with either Expel ([rawr]-spike) or Mirror ([BOSS]-Spike)

EDIT: Just thought of an interesting source for your 'research' ... Guild Wars Memorial MaT Builds ... choose the MaT, pick a match look up the builds and try to find "the ele's" ... good luck! I hope this helps.

Thank you for your input. Although, I don't quite get what your opinion was. Was it that you believe that they "suck" as the thread you linked us to insinuates or that they have their uses?

If the EDIT comment was sarcasm, I did indeed find multiple guilds in the MAT with ele builds.

Nuking did suck back when Ensign first wrote that post. Nuking's been buffed out the wazoo since nightfall. Then VoD died and AoE nukes became of limited use in GvG (albeit dominating HA right now). The mind blasters are decent ranged gankers but are mostly being outshone by turret rangers atm (like so many other classes, paragon, mesmer...) Just two months ago people were playing shatterstone as well, another decent gank build, but 2s spells do not mix with so many dual ranger teams.

Hey xKyo,
If you take your time to dig through that ensign thread you soon discover that it's not Ele's that suck, but the Elementalists potential as damage dealer at that time. Which changes a bit in later posts by Ensign as well, due to Nighfall's power creep. However is still a valuable point in my opinion, since for example a BA-Turret does overshadow Elemental damage by far. I wasn't sarcastic in that post, just trying to help with delivering information, rather then my opinion.

Here is what I think if you wanna know:

Yes, Ele's have their uses as midline utility box or spike assist (see [BOSS]-spike)
No, I don't think an Ele in your build makes the winning change.

Personally I am not a big fan of Ele's for several reason:

- I hate those casting times (that's why FC Snares are so much better, and no I don't count them as Ele's);
- I don't like their energy management options (Attunements get stripped, leaving you with a glyph of lesser; Mindblast, Glowing Ice and Shock Arrow make up a bit but usually only so much to fuel your next 5 energy skill);
- Their overall damage output is mediocre and predictable (with high casting times);
- 60 AL base;

To sum it up:
If I can avoid putting an Ele in our GvG builds I will do that.
Midline caster classes that perform better at the moment are Ritualists (for extra defense and spike assist) or Necro's (with imbalanced Hexes and Foul Feast/ Plague Sending) in my opinion. But I don't mind running a build with an Ele if they fit in.

Well and a good Dom Mes wins games, always has, always will. For me they are out of discussion here, since they don't or shouldn't take "the Ele spot" in a team build anyway

Eles are becoming less and less needed as these overpowered templates keep thriving and aren't being nerfed.

It depends on what you're going for if they're integral or not though. They can be a very powerful snare tool if you're running some sort of split/run around build, and they can be a good 8v8 defensive midline that can have a mix between defense and spike power (E/Rt bsurge). Beyond that anymore, there really aren't any uses for them. Other new templates are going to be a lot more effective for doing what you want.

I find that any ele out there is used to reduce damage from the warriors. Apart from maybe a SF Runner, I cant think of an ele build that doesnt bring blind of some sort.

Any air ele will atleast bring b-flash. Any water ele, GoI/Steam. Mind Blast fire ele, iirc runs a bit into air and brings blinding flash along, but I havent run into any mind blast eles recently. So basically, their role has been reduced to blinding the other team. Is this bad, no, however to bring this you have to sacrifice a slot. Not necessarily not worth it, but it does require consideration before jumping in like that.
