there never was a golden age of tombs either, sorry to say. the first week or so people played mostly with premade builds, but after a while lightning orb/surge spike was the dominant meta. chain lightning was pretty ridiculous at that time and i believe it was the first nerfed skill in gw (maybe balths aura?). but then people discovered oath shot and spiritspam dominated tombs for a good 3 months, up until pvpx made it so you could only have one of the same spirit at a time. the nr nerf didn't help either, and it opened the door for smite (and stancesmite lol). like a month after that they totally destroyed ether renewal but absolutely broke rangerspike in the same update, and so that became the new meta. the gwwc update (best update ever imo) added an after cast to punishing/savage/dshot and so toned rangerspike down a bit. but then apparently iway came along, and i think you know the story from there.

Having to do certain builds all the time is boring, but unfortunatly when i started HA the only teams i could get into was sway because i was unranked and the ranked players would say go back to pve noobie no rank -_-

If there wasnt so much rank segregation i really believe sway and iway or the silly sf sins would not of gotten as big as they did, simply because there would be no need for people to desperatly gain ranks to play with the higher players and do fun builds like balance and try new builds.

I made a build once, but because i am only r3 now no one wanted to try it, but if a r10 said the same thing as me, they would get tons of people flocking at them most probably.

It is a shame, i think at the start of HA ranks wouldnt of mattered so much, and everyone was at almost the same level as each other, so it probably seemed like a better quality of players and opposition.

Back in the day my guild ran a nasty build with 2 drain mesmers and 2 migraine mesmers. This was before factions was released and pretty overpowered.

I think there were a few guilds that seemed to have HoH a lot of the time, Your Math Teachers [Math] being one of them i seem to remember. Also, IWAY was loads of fun, even though it was for noobs it got plenty of people, including me to rank 3. Also, we used to try and gank the Koreans if it was 2 america teams and 1 Korean in those 3-way maps.

HoH began to die when they started trying to balance the gameplay rather than the skills. I can post this from a very objective point, because I haven't played GW for about a year now.

When they started balancing the gameplay to prevent holding builds, rather than balancing the skills in those builds, they killed HoH. The entire lure of playing Tombs was the possibility of holding for hours with a new build and counterbuilding those who were holding. Also, IWAY was the only reason halls stayed alive for as long as it did after they began the balancing, despite all the hate that it gathered (I hated it too when I played )

To be honest there is quite a simple reason why HA and organised PvP has died over time.

Pre-made Builds.

When people stop sending in pre-made builds for everyone to use at their leisure and when website such as PvXwiki stop ruining the game only to fill their pockets then we can have a good form of PvP. But sadly its too late now.

I can imagine the same will happen to GW2. I guess we'll have to enjoy the game for the first few months until the game will be ruined by pre-made strategies. The only thing we can do is to stop those websites such as PvXwiki, but sadly the owners pockets are more important than their dignity and the quality of a multi million game.

So what was PvP back then when there where no pre-made builds around? Random, refreshing, rewarding and most importantly fun.

It was golden when it was 6v6. Also, on a side note, BYOB HA ownz :

Had one Choking Gas/Practiced Stance Raner, Shock War, IWAY War, two RaO Thumeprs, and a SB/Infuse.

Its been a long time since I have PvP'ed. (hell I only just decided to play a bit of Guild Wars at all again, Those korean players were not pleased when I showed up in RA with my Illusionary Weaponry Ranger haha.)

I think the last guild I was in was Lex Talionis or something.

To be honest I think IWAY was what kept HA fun.

- You could get a team together in 5 minutes for a few rounds of axe swinging with a chance of winning and didn't even need vent.
- When playing balanced builds you could mock it.
- It Kept alot of the FotM builds in check.

Heres a few pics I found in my photobucket.

This is us winning HA with IWAY (we tended to switch between that/balanced and one of Loreks crazy builds that half the time never worked)

Heres us winning a GvG match with my modified version of [Rifts] Pet/MF build. God that was fun to play with. The first viable Thumper build (which was sadly mauled by the release of factions.)

Just a random TA match, I enjoyed those quite a bit.
