In the case of TA maybe, I don't remember Hero Battles ever not being shit..

There is absolutely no basis for this statement. Why would the pve community revenue more than the pvp community????
so you're telling me that none of the pvp community use those facilities? I can tell you right now you are wrong.

To the contrary, many high end pvpers buy multiple accounts for smurfs, which adds far more revenue than micro-transactions such as makeovers and name changes. Granted pve-ers also purchase additional accounts for whatever reason, but that does not alter my argument

Maybe so, but that doesn't warrant disregard for arenas, as I'm sure you would be quick to agree with. It really doesn't matter what something was designed to do, the community will use and adapt things for their own enjoyment. I can confidently say that beginners in TA wont get enjoyment (from winning) for some time until they have truly learn the arena and the meta game

TA isn't that dead. I know many many people who play regularly, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

One last point
@Gboy Mesmero; i fail to see how them saying something and then not doing it till 2 years later qualifies as lack of communication. They never gave a time frame. the fact of the matter is, HB was pretty much beyond help (and yes, i do play HB, before the QQers start) and could never truly be fixed, see my earlier post lalala.

TA was actually playable when it was first released, HB wasn't. Anet might argue that the format was never popular but it was never even given a fair chance. There were plenty of votes back then to delay the implementation of the ladder and AT's and actually make the format playable first, but Anet completely ignored us.

You people whining about HB being removed utterly fail to realize WHY it's being removed. Could it be made better with a few simple skill changes? Yes. But it's not at all worth changing skills for a format that is played less than the Ascalon Arena.

To make Hero Battles a fun, attractive format that could actually sustain a reasonable player base, they would need to revamp it completely. It's not only about skills, it about the fact that most people don't find flagging their heroes around in little circles fun. Because of the nature of the format, you can't play a fast-paced, offensive build, because you'll get beaten out by somebody running three monks who does nothing but cap.

Team Arenas has a similar problem. Although it's not as fundamentally flawed as HB, most people these days look at it as a horribly imbalanced format dominated by gimmicks and a very few players who are actually capable of running "balanced" there. Even if they decided to fix all of the problem skills in TA, changing people's perceptions of it enough to get them to give it an honest chance is a lot more difficult.

In my mind, TA and HB (and to some lesser extend, HA too) were always sort of meant to be a gateway into the ultimate form of PvP, GvG. Neither of them worked that way. TA has become elitist and full of broken builds, and HB was flawed right from the start. Sealed Deck is fresh start, but for it to be effective at getting people more involved PvP, it can't be competing with two highly disfunctional formats.

Good post, good insight.

On a side note I might add that AB is starting to spiral down in the wrong direction as well. As has been confirmed in other threads good players steer clear of AB on the kurzick side, leading to very uneven matches in general. Maybe something needs to be done before the format loses popularity?

I don't know about FA/JQ as I never play them but from forum posts I get the feeling the matches are skewed there as well.

All this talk about too many formats and not enough players reminded me of a chart I made some years ago explaining how Unreal Tournament died.

And now GW is dead
