Over here ISP's have a thing called interleaving which i think is just error checking but it adds 20-30ms to ping times. You can request that they turn it off over the phone, that's one of the biggest drops in ping times i've seen on my connection but that may just be a UK thing.

Moving ISP is a good idea if you know someone else near you with a really good ping you can move to the same ISP as them but just moving to an ISP that claims to be good for "fast gaming" is a recipe for disaster, you may end up with a worse connection after all the hassle and then be stuck on a 12month contract.
With connections you usually get what you pay for, in my experience the more you pay the less the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO with your connection, a cheap connection will be subject to traffic shaping and throttling at peak hours.

Your location does make a huge difference, i'm not sure why GW suffers so much with cross server connections, i often play on US servers in games like counterstrike and TF2 and my ping never gets above 100, but i'm sure everyone knows how bad everything gets in a GvG when one side is from the US and the other from europe.

I think it's mostly down to Guild Wars having poor servers or poor bandwidth management, normally in an MMO you wouldn't notice so much but with interrupts being such a core aspect of PvP you really notice when you get even the slightest lag.

I think the biggest difference there is with Counterstrike and TF2, you're playing on Valve servers and stuck playing Anets servers for GW. BIG difference.

I also think Anet has been shutting down GW servers for awhile to cut back on expenses, which makes matters worse.

Faster loading times, sure.
But having a better ping is just your imagination, argueing about this would only make you look more stupid.

Basically, if your connection is already decent, there's nothing you can do to make it better. Just make sure there arent any p2p programs running.

Absolutely right!

I think people tend to lump most of their lag problems into an all encompasing 'bad ping'.

Most lag problems can be attributed to other crap like:

loaded down processor
video card
fragmented gw.dat
any number of HDD issues
blah, blah, blah

None of which have anything to do with your ping. An incredible number of people actually think that their video card somehow affects their ping, which is absolutely rediculous. People see their FPS drop and automatically go "OMG my ping is SHIT".

I know Linksys routers have a pretty good utility to assign bandwidth priority to certain programs specifically for online gaming. I think you can also do it within windows itself. Other than something like that .............. you can buy new video cards and SSD's your blue in the face and it won't change your ping 1 ms

If you have Windows Zero Config enabled instead of the wireless drivers for your wireless device then you will experience large lag spikes every 1-2 min or so. This isn't really any blazing new information for online gaming, but it surprises me how many people still have it enabled.

For wireless problems, I've found the opposite to be true (at least for many brands of wireless cards). Disable your wireless card's own connection utility and use the built-in Wireless Zero utility.

(do not uninstall the driver, usually you change a setting in the utility to say 'let windows manage this' etc., or sometimes you have to disable it from msconfig and reboot).

Then your wireless cards have absolutely terrible drivers. Window's wireless will give you lag spikes as even after it is connected it continues to search for available networks. It is a lag spike of about 1-2 seconds every 1-2 min, rather minor for most things, but get into a heated match and suddenly it will make you so mad you break shit.
