Default Class combinations

Hey me and my bro just started playing guild wars and we really like all the classes but what we really want to know is what 2 classes would go really good together for pvp? and neither of us want to play a healing class so yeah...

In any kind of 8v8 setting, it'll be a lot easier to bring someone along with you in a package if one of you can monk. Beyond that, all I can advise you to do is to figure out what you like playing.

If you just started playing yesterday, don't bother with PvP. Regardless of what you take, you're going to get smashed non-stop for hours on end. Play through PvE first, unlock some stuff, learn the game mechanics, learn what works and what doesn't, what's good and what isn't, what each profession is for, how each profession can synergise with others, etc. If you look at that list and can't check off all of them, breaking into PvP is probably going to be a massive waste of time.

Not to say you can't PvP if you really want to, but you've got no hope of contributing anything to your team in your first day. I'd suggest finding a guild that helps teach people PvP, though they may just advise the above.

The above sums just about everything up.

If you are still serious on getting into PvP right away however, keep in mind that you are going to be discriminated against by most players. Alliance Battles is the easiest team format to get into due to its low level of competitiveness and small party size, whereas Guild versus Guild is the hardest. If you want to get into these more competitive formats, learn to network with skilled/friendly people you play with and keep those people on your friends list. Try and play with several of them regularly so you get used to each others' play styles. To get you started (once you have at least a little PvE experience) give Random Arenas a go.

Warrior and an ele. One of you playing uber melee and on of you uber nuker. Heroes can heal for you just fine ;-)

edit: oh wait, this is pvp ><

well, in pvp, you have to play with other people. So just find builds that seem interesting to you in particular team builds. You have to be versatile with multiple classes in pvp. at least in the beginning before you can get a core team to play with. i would find a pvp guild to play with.

I don't share this view personally, I started the game with Factions, on my first day I made a mesmer, played to the secondary prof quests then logged out, made a PvP char and jumped into RA.

You won't learn anything from PvE, this is coming from experience first-hand, if you don't believe me just enter a round or two of RA or AB to see how well PvErs do in a PvP setting.

Throw yourself into the (relatively) deep end imo, sure you won't do well, but you will learn way faster than playing through PvE which you can finish with an empty skillbar.

On Topic: It really depends what format you are playing, since you are new, its probably going to be a 4v4 format. Groups generally follow a frontline, 2xmidline/support, backline team structure.

Frontline is your melee types, things like warriors, and um, pretty much warriors, I would not advise trying to run other pseudo-frontline classes like dervish or assassin until you get better at the game.

Midline/Support is things like casters, ranged damage, disruption. Stuff like elementalists for damage, rangers/mesmers for disruption, necromancers for hexes.

Backline is your monk, which you won't worry about since you've shown no interest :P

If you want to do well, I'd recommend a warrior + a ranger or a mesmer, but don't lock yourself into one class, in GW it is VERY easy to change profs. Its just 1 minute making a PvP character away.

Also make sure you are using a PvP-only character as you have easy access to gear and spells, only use a PvE character when you basically get rich enough to buy the same gear as you have on ur PvP char.

Lastly, check out some builds on www.pvxwiki.com, pick out some that you like for the format you and your friend are playing, save up balthasar faction to unlock the skills and roll some face.

Marty is right. Learn the basics, from pve, then move on to pvp. That doesn't mean you need to pve to get good at pvp but to just learn basics.

I remember being overwhelmed when i first went to tombs pvp...makes you want to quit and go pve so YEAH try pve, zaishen challenges, Random Arena & Alliance Battles but don't take them too serious it's not real pvp especially all the bad attitude.

You can still grasp the basics for pvp if you understand how to kill things quickly in pve.

Warrior and ranger combo is best imo.

I was the same, I started to do PvE but found it quite tedious. I found virtually nothing useful that came from dragging myself through PvE. I remember when I first did PvP, I really liked the fast-paced action compared to PvE (I can't imagine running around for hours without having some sort of major fight). I would recommend just jumping into it; it'll keep you from learning bad habits from PvE (i.e. tanking, which doesn't work in PvP)

I've always advocated doing whatever the hell you want. Swearing yourself to one class and playing it constantly has its bonuses, but branching out and trying other classes will not only give you a first impression but also give general knowledge and skill about the game. That's not to say you shouldn't specialize later on. When you've found whatever seems interesting or a favorite profession you want to try, you can then focus on whatever you plan on doing.

If you're planning on playing with a friend, I honestly don't think particular combos matter since you both should have relative ease getting into groups, which should be what's most important. Using the frontline (melee), midline (casters), and backline (healers) structures mentioned above, you could consider focusing both of your characters in one area, so you can play together, learn together, and notice each other more notably.

I think the most general combination is Monk + Warrior. It'll work everywhere except JQ, when it can still work but takes a lot more skill.

Both ideas here have merit.

I started playing Guild Wars in May 2005. I immediately jumped into RA and ignored PvE. A bit later I did start doing PvE, but only so that I could unlock skills - gaining Balthazar faction back then took FOREVER. If the PvP rewards of today had been in place, I likely would have pretty much never done PvE (and, as it stands, I still haven't officially "beaten" Prophecies and I haven't even touched Nightfall at all...although I did complete Factions).

I was able to immediately understand and do well in the PvP side of the game, but two factors influenced that:

#1 - I had played MMORPGs extensively in the past, which gave me a lot of insight into many of the Guild Wars mechanics. I was able to quickly absorb the skills and, most importantly, I completely understood the power and importance of kiting before I ever played Guild Wars. It's actually pretty sad how many players still don't really understand how to utilize movement (even just in regards to kiting, not even in terms of movement in GvG).

#2 - Guild Wars in 2005 was much simpler. There were far less skills to learn (whereas now 3 extra campaigns have added a tremendous amount of additional skills), damage dealing wasn't nearly at the level it is now, and the skill level of your opponents in general was lower.

Guild Wars in 2010, if you're just starting, it is going to be a lot more difficult. I'd say that playing PvE would be somewhat beneficial to at least familiarize yourself with some of the skills. Ultimately it really won't teach you much, though, no.

There are a couple good guides here for playing Warrior and Ranger (sticky at the top of the page):

http://www.teamquitter.com/phpBB2/vi...f59e3e 84f07e

But, basically...if you jump right into PvP you're going to get smashed, yes. Marty is correct. A bit of PvE to familiarize yourself with controls and such might help a bit, but ultimately you'll just have to take a LOT of knocks and learn as you go.
