So what makes a guild? Is it the guild name itself or the guild players? We all know that adding an "s" to "Rebel Rising", thus making it to "Rebel Risings" won't carry on the trim, thus making it a different guild. Or adding "Reformatted" to "Rebel Rising" making it "Rebel Rising Reformatted" won't be the original guild. But if the players from Rebel Rising play under Rebel Rising Reformatted, the latter guildname will just carry on the "essence" of the guild, but it won't be the original guild.

Guns and Roses is still Guns and Roses even if it's only Axl Rose left in there. Guns and Roses will always be Guns and Roses even Axl quits the music business. Same with Sublime. Bradley Nowell owned the name Sublime and when the living members decided to revive Sublime, it had to be "Sublime with Rome".

Guild members come and go, but we all know what will remain for posterity.

What do you guys think? Is it the guild name or guild players that matter? Just wondering ^^.

It's the guildname that usually goes down in history. I know the guild named EvIL, back in the day everybody knew EvIL... but I know none of the player names.
But it's the players that take a guild to the top. The guildtag carries the testament of their achievements and it's the players stamp they leave behind. For me personally it is comparable to a building or monument that stands through time, but the general public doesn't know the architect/builders' names.

I think that the guild name stays in history for the masses (normal casual players) and the names of specific players are remembered only by the 0.0001% group of hardcore players that specialize in specific areas. I could bring examples of Zraw and DL that people would know but the group of people that are "legends" amongs these guilds and allies will be remembered only by the people interacting with the guild

Its the players in the guild who make the guild's name memorable, while they themselves go on nameless in the community's minds.
Everyone knows the mainstream guilds, whether through love or hate, but virtually no one can name any of the players in those guilds.

Casual observers care about guild names. People in the know care about the players.

It is 100% the players. If the rawr crew started playing again under the guild name Pretty Pink Ponies [awsm], they would still be known and referred to as rawr (just as they were when they played under the cape is a lie [trim]). They are still called rawr because that is who they are. They played for the guild when it was successful and as long as they play together they will forever be called rawr.

On the other end, guilds do not share the same result. eF is a pretty good example. Sure the guild is called Team Everfrost, but no one in serious PvP would ever call a single person in that guild right now a member of eF. eF was a very good PvP guild that has come and gone and the players who won the gold trim will forever be known as eF. Without them the guild is nothing. It is the shed skin of a snake. It is no longer a part of the living organism that made it what it was. It is simply a piece of dead skin being abused by the people who currently reside in it. The same goes for every single gold cape guild no longer in the possession of those who put the gold their in the first place. It is hollow and meaningless.

Players matter. Guild names don't.

As someone already mentioned, it's the players that make guild name famous. GvG smurf guilds prove that point. If RenO plays under Random Smurf Guild name they'll still be called RenO and their players will be respected not the guild name itself.

But if the RenO guys quit the game, it will still be RenO that will get remembered, not their random smurf guilds.

Completely wrong.
Look at dirtspike. They started playing the build while using the guild name Galactic President Superstar Mc [awsm] but everyone still called the template dirtspike (and not awesomespike) because the [awsm] guild was comprised under the players who had played in [dirt] for years and years.
