Well heres my advice.

The best overall farmer for you would be the character than you know how to use best. Dont go for what others say, but go with whats the best you know how to use for every use.

Don't listen to this.

Look, an Ele and Monk currently are probably the best farmers. The eles can do that fancy terra tank and mist form stuff, and the 55/105/600 Monks are so versatile it's disgusting.

A ranger isn't as good at farming as an elementalist is. This is a fact. I love rangers, I truly do. But they are simply not as good.

I'd take an Ele or Monk as a farmer, but warriors are fairly decent as well. And assassins have their niche moments as well.

It's not what you find best, it's which is CONSIDERED the best general farmer (ripped right from the title)

just wanted to point out that is should have been capitalized because if considered is the stressed word then you're implying that consider is not a synonym for think; in fact, they are very much so =]

monk/ele/war
nec/mes/sin/derv
para (not very versatile)

necro does well with SS, mes with IW, but nothing clears a mob faster and safer as an invinci monk, ele, and many times a war =]

superior farming classes exist because there are factors of versatility and speed (all professions can farm UW smites but w/mes is fastest atm [yay dont feel no pain])
