Default Confused about drop rates.

I was told the other day that if I farmed Smite crawlers group by group I have a better chance of getting more ectos because they can't be mass farmed, is this true? I was told it applys for Glacial Stones aswell but the other day while running my W/rt in the UW I was killing 12 - 14 maybe at once and I got 2 ectos from 3 groups more or less at the same time so this has left me confused, maybe he was just lying but I'd like to know the facts.

Ugh...Inb4argument

There are several theories on how Droprate works. One major belief is that killing things in large numbers, at the same time, lowers the amount of drops you get.

Other people say that, regardless of how you kill them, they'll drop the same things.

The best bet would be for you to ignore everyone, go out farming, and draw your own conclusions.

Ok well I believe that it doesn't change no matter how many you farm at once. Mainly because it's unproven that the less you farm at once the more you get since I've gotten 2 ectos within a few seconds of eachother which in a way proves it doesn't make a difference.

EDIT: Ugh my manners! :P Thanks for the info.

I seen a vid recently on youtube, it was a guy farming glacial stones in Jaga moraine, firstly he killed them 1by1 with just sliver armor and he got a few gold drops and about 5-6 stones from one group. Then he tryed by spamming crystal wave / tenais once they all died at the same time there was a purple drop and 1 stone. I don't know if this is proven completely but it looked pretty convincing

have you heard about chance and statistics?

1 run is worthles to draw a conclusion AND they could have compaered the 2 most extreme resultsin the vid

loot scaling dosnt effect rare material drop so once u enter the amount of ectos there is set its just a matter of the other crap that drops if u kill a bunch at once less drops if u kill them in small more drops most drops being merch food but thats the basic idea it says on wiki

edit: http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Loot go there and scroll down it explains it better

There has been some strong evidence presented in these forums to suggest that it doesn't matter at all whether you kill a whole group at the same time or one by one. Apon entering a zone, the potential drops from any enemy in that zone are decided by the farming code, and these things will drop regardless. There has been some quite compelling evidence presented that suggests the ONLY thing that decides your drops is the TIME at which you entered the zone. In particular, 2 people tried farming where they tried to farm a location, entering at exactly the same time (or as close as they could get). They farmed the same location using the same build, taking different amounts of time to kill things. At the end the drops they both got (right down to the whites, tomes, etc) where almost completely identical. For this to have happened randomly is exceedingly unlikely, and so this provides strong reason to believe that drops are decided by time of entry alone. For any more certainty, we'd have to hear from Anet in my opinion...

ive also tampered with this idea, and it doesnt really seem to make a difference in drop rate.
