Wrong, at least as far as rubies go. Sapphires indeed have no reliable farm, but you can farm hulking stone elementals in ascalon for rubies. Not the most efficient farm maybe, but people do it, and you will get rubies.

Just for clarification - any monster that drops crafting materials has an extremely slim chance of dropping a Sapphire/Ruby, Pre-Searing excluded IIRC.

I've got like five or six from farming Elementals in HM outside Sardelac Sanitarium, in Ascalon. However, just like in Pre-Searing, the variety of drops of these monsters is very low; they basically just drop Warrior and Ranger weapons, a collectable, and Charcoal/Granite, limiting the possibilities and increasing the percentage of dyes/rubies/sapphires.

Another way would be to farm hidden chests on level 2-3 in CoF, just clear enough to make it to all the hidden chest spawns, rinse and repeat. It should be 6-8 chests, 3-4 per level on levels 2-3. It should take you 30 minutes or less if you don't bother to go on and kill the boss each time..

They do drop from those chests but rarely so you would have to do it a lot I imagine.

FYI, Only gold and maps drop from level 1 hidden chests so you could just pass those up to speed things up.

Hulking Stone Elementals in between Ascalon City and Sardelac Sanitarium in HM also drop Sapphires (not just Rubies). I've had 3 Sapphires drop from them in runs with my 55 SV Necro farmer (all 3 dropped during holiday weekends, too!).

Rare crafting materials can drop from Hidden Treasures in some of the GW:EN Dungeons as well, I've seen them in CoF HM runs quite a few times.

The last time I did the 'free' chest runs in NF (Treasure Chests/Buried Treasures/Do Not Touch) I got 1 Ruby and 1 Sapphire, too.

As far as farming goes, Ruby Djinn Essences can salvage into Rubies, and Sapphire Djinn Essences can salvage into Sapphires, but just like the Hulking Stone Elementals, this is pretty rare. Still, a friend of mine used to use a D/Mo farmer to solo farm the Djinns (both types, Ruby and Sapphire) and he got tons of Essence drops, but rarely a Ruby/Sapphire salvage. Those are pretty much your options, unless you go on Wiki and find what can drop/salvage either of those 2 materials. Just like others have said, it might be a better use of your time to farm up the cash and buy them from a Rare Material Trader or other Players, but the farming runs can't hurt, even if they put 1 or 2 more in your stash, right?

Hope this helps.

Well not really a true farm, but a way of earning rubies and sapphires is to earn your Trade Contracts and trade them in at the Kodash Bazaar. It takes 7 Contracts per gem. You could also waste your time and stand around spamming "WTB Trade Contracts".

You can always go Perma SF and farm ectos before ANet nerfs it, if they do.

In the 3 or so days I farmed ectos, I got about 3 Rubies and 5 Sapphires (with 80ish Ectos). Not the fasted for the materials themselves, but you can sell Ectos and buy Rubies and Sapphires.

Plus while you are farming for the gemstones, you are getting a ton of granite (they seem to drop a lot of cleavers which salvage into granite too) and it is selling pretty high right now so you can buy save money to buy what you don't find.

Farm something else and buy them, or as anyone else said, if you can mass kill something that drops mats, they can also drop rubies/what not

Well, when compared with something like ecto farming chaos planes with a perma, most "normal" farms fall short. I'm not saying its a bad farm per se, its just that there are a few very, very good farms that outshine it (and most other farms too). Doesn't stop people from doing them though.

Just a thought but geodes also have a chance to salvage into a ruby.

Quit making your self look stupid,i said no effective way, meaning the way i said was better then farming rubies/sapphires.

You are MUCH better off farming somthing else and buying rubies-farming elementals for them would take many hours longer then just farming some where else.

Please think and actually read what your quoting before you say somthing stupid. by giving the OP bad info your making him farm somthing that obviously isnt going to get him any where.

Please read the I made two above the one I'm replying to right now.

I'll even clarify more, being the generous guy that I am. When I said that "it's not the most efficient farm", I meant exactly what I said, but not what you took it to mean: that its plenty good, but that there are a few farms that vastly outclass it, like farming ectos with sin or doa speedclears. However, these outclass most farms, so unless you want to say that noone should ever farm anything but these most efficient farms, you can't dismiss this farm out of hand either.

It should also be noted that elemental farming is stupid easy. Not that something like perma sin is hard, but doing chaos planes FAST is, as you have to have some rudimentary knowledge aggro control, especially with mindblades being ranged now. The elemental farm can also be done by many different classes and builds, and so anyone with prophecies can do it, whereas the perma requires access to factions, nf, and eotn (the amount of people missing at least one of these chapters is amazing, though admittedly they don't post much here).

What i was going to write.

For all the weapons find a higly salvageable inscr and place it onthe item and its very easy to farm Geodes and salvage them for rubies lets say out of 12 geodes theres a ruby and seeing as its a easy farm its good money. You can farm Roaring ether hearts and a elite Rt tome if you have a perma sin its a very profitable farm.

Farm Rain beetles for Geodes not sure what build could be used but you certainly need anti interupt.

I've farmed a couple of stacks of granite from elementals, and played through all three campaigns several times, am "I have many leather-bound books", and never got a single gem except from chests in EotN dungeons and as drops in FoW/UW, so I'd say the probability of getting gems from normal mobs is very, very, very, low.

For comparison I have 17 black dye in storage, plus several of avatars have black armor, and superior vigors on most of my avatars, all obtained as drops.

I completely support the suggestion to farm something else (feathers or granite is fast & easy) and buying the gems.
