There are many alternatives to a Totem Axe and you can easily get it for cheaper than a Totem Axe. When I first started farming I bought a perfect insc. sephis sword and upgraded that and voilĂ  I had 20% enchanting, +5 energy for around 3K.

Whoever told you an assassin is impossible to farm with isn't really a good source since now assassin is probably the most used profession for farming due to Shadow Form. You can easily farm with an assassin just go to the farming section within pvxwiki and look at the perma sin builds.

Totem Axes are not worth very much. Sins will probably struggle as you need to be able to run there, then dish out damage when you get there, which can difficult for an Assassin. You would be better of farming somewhere else, and getting the money to buy a Totem Axe.
The build you have posted is a running build, you could possibly run to the Root Behemoths, but you can no method to kill them or the Life Pods that spawn.

5K isn't really that much anyway so ask your guild/alliance to borrow 4K and then return the money later on once you start running..

i always use either - earth staff of enchanting with +20 nrg for running or for farming when a/e - the extra energy is great and if using earth it means you do better dmg if u need to.
the other weapon is a scythe of enchanting but thats mainly for use if fighting an i need nrg fast or im using crit scythe sin ( yes some still use them ).
Totems i feel are used too much and also after a while look too ugly and its always nice to have a weapon that you feel looks nice - firey dragon sword of enchanting i think always looks gd on a sin or caster and others may suggest a diff weapon - usually voltaic spear ( in not a vs lover an i refuse to have one on any chr lol )

Two rules about totem axe farming.

1) Its actually very easy.
2) The "Great" builds listed on PvX for this are really, really dreadful.

The most important thing when you start farming is not too restrict yourself to one thing. I'd start with HM Raptor farming, since it's very easy and even though apparently Anet has no anti-farming code, when you start out there you get a lot of golds and it eventually dwindles out. These golds at the start are generally pretty bad skins, but you can sell them unidentified for quite a bit of money to get you on your feet. Then you can start farming other stuff, anywhere really where the monsters don't have healers/strong selfheals.

Raptors are in EotN and you need to have completed that to access Hard Mode

Depends on what you want to do...I would complete nightfall even though it takes ages just to get money or I would to EotN so I can farm different things in HM but I would do prophecies last even though you won't have HM ToA because it doesn't really benefit a assassin but you can do that on another character. It's really about what you want to do

Well then complete all the campaigns in order of priority; prophecies for UW HM farming in ToA, nightfall for money I guess and DoA and EotN for dungeons

Bird farm for feathers (honestly its a good and stable return) 9-10k per stack of feathers

all you need is a perma setup with sliver radiation field and ebon standard glyph of lesser energy as well Farm Hardmode outside LA. totem farming is a long run and boring

it is not too hard to get 250 feathers you get alot of gold drops and salvage everything to sell

before you know it you will have some good cash

Perma is using a build that keeps Shadow Form up permanently, thus making yourself basically invincible. If you take a look at PvXwiki, or the builds thread that's stickied at the top, you'll find several different variations on it.

Feather farming is awesome, though. I usually do it in easy mode in Jaya Bluffs in Factions, though outside LA and Nahpui Quarter are also good places. Try them out and pick your favorite and go to town. It's a good stable way to get some decent income. I personally prefer it to pretty much any other farms
