Default R/W Stubborn Ranger Raptor Farm (NM) - event items farming

Note: Please consider this a fun but casual farming build.

I'm looking for comments and suggestions regarding speeding it up, but ideally want to keep to the original design.

So please, if you want to post another build all together, then don't.

This build is used for farming event item drops such as ToT bags or Wintersday items in normal mode by killing Raptor Nestlings who can be outside of Rata Sum in a cave.

Drop rates for these items are the same in both normal mode and hard mode. This build is designed for normal mode and cannot kill the Brood Mother.

I made this build for Ranger players who lack access to other farming builds used by Warriors, Assassins, etc... and don't have the time or the energy to create other farming characters. Thus the stubborn in the title.

This is also the reason the build is for NM and avoids using heroes.

The average time per run is 1 to 2 minutes.

The fast run I've tried was 47 seconds!

--------------------

Profession: Ranger / Warrior
  • Axe Mastery - 9
  • Tactics - 12
  • Expertise - 8 + 3
  • Wilderness Survival - 5 + 1
Skills:
  • Dwarven Stability
  • Gladiator's Defence
  • Radiation Field
  • Cyclone Axe
  • Whirlwind Attack
  • Healing Signet
  • Whirling Defence
  • Dodge
Variations:
  • Replace Dodge with Zojun's Haste if you don't have it
Equipment:
  • Radiant or Survivor Armour
  • A Furious max damage Axe of Fortitude

Usage:

The build usage is as follows, if done correct a single run can be done in under 1-2 minutes:
1. Immediately use Dwarven Stability and then use Dodge to quickly run to the cave.

2. Upon entering the cave use Whirling Defence, now round-up all the Raptor Nestlings. Leave the Brood Mother group alone.

3. Recharge Dwarven Stability when it runs out.

4. Use Radiation Field before the Raptor Nestlings catch up with you (This lessens the chance of it being interrupted) and the use Gladiator's Defence.

5. The combined damage of these two will easily kill all the Raptor Nestlings off within moments.

6. Use Cyclone Axe when its available to do additional damage. Follow this up with Whirlwind Attack, which Cyclone Axe will charge for you.

7. Used Healing Signet to heal as needed.

8. Optional - Now round up the Brood Mother group and quickly kill as many Raptor Nestlings in the same manner and collect any drops before the Brood Mother kills you. I generally skip this as I find it faster to map back to Rata Sum and get another run going.
Counters:
  • Having Radiation Field interrupted (Which does happen sometimes) could result in the Raptor Nestlings killing you before you kill them.
  • If the Raptor Nestlings get enough hits past your defences due to bad luck
  • Aggroing the Brood Mother group, this build cannot kill the brood mother.
  • Aggroing any of the monsters outside of the cave will kill you.
Notes:

Remember the build is designed for farming event drops such as ToT bags or Wintersday items, which drop rates are the same in both normal mode or hard mode.

Also you can kill the Raptor Nestlings within the Brood Mother group if you want, just make sure to collect any drops before the Brood Mother kills you.

For farming reputation or other drops, try other builds.

I'm sure many will look at this and think 'huh or lolz', but oddly it does work, and the results speak for themselves:

Note: Please consider this a fun and casual farming build.

I'm looking for comments and suggestions regarding speeding it up, but ideally want to keep to the original design.

So please, if you want to post another build all together, then don't.

Take the N/W bar, put crap in BM instead of curses, take EoE, turn HM on.
?????
Profit!

With eoe as mentioned in my earlier post you can and farm HM, and kill rekoff. As a bonus, it's usually faster than a war r Nec cuz your ball matters little as long as its in eoe range.

Winbow alextheprecise thanks for that, but I clearly stated I wanted feedback on this odd / fun little build I few together one bored evening, not for you to post / plug another build.

But I will consider building the hammer skill in favour of an axe with Cyclone Axe for greater DPS, and maybe replace troll with Throw Dirt for greater damage reduction.

While Feel No Pain isn't the best healing skill, its enough to provide some instant healing, which is better to have then not.

Remember I'm not looking for a better build, I'm just trying to improve this one.

Update:

Changed to Axe Mastery and an max damage Axe. Added Cyclone Axe and Throw Dirt.

Build is working even faster now, down to a confirmed 1 minute 30 seconds or less.

Done 5 runs, each less then 2 minutes and gained 28 ToT bags for my troubles. Not bad.

Now, just theorycrafting here, if you wanted to go hard mode, maybe get paragon hero, like the w/n and n/w versions, use their shouts to help you, and then equip eoe. Put it outside the cave, then round everything up and use the skills as normal, although rad field may be a bit iffy, it might be better just to use 100b.

How is changing from Hammer to Axe not be a completely different and not just a "improvement". Seems to me to be just as minor of a change as the EoE change proposed by Windbow...

Way to play the fun card, Firebat. I don't have any suggestions.... just do what you're doing bro. More power to you.

You're still doing this in NM and you're using the same principle as HB + whirlwind (but in a less effective manner).

I don't understand why you wouldn't just use http://www.gwpvx.com/Build:Any/W_HB_Raptor_Farmer

You're using the exact same method in each build. HB just let's you farm every raptor + boss in HM while your bar is pulling half the mobs in NM. Using cyclone axe + glad defense isn't more "creative" or "fun" than using HB + whirlwind, you're just using gimped skills to try and do the same thing xD

As a very stubborn ranger, I plan to try this later.

Plus I like the no heros thing to his build. The extra clicks means I have to pay attention to that raptor farm and paying attention while I grind is not my thing.

Plus if you are farming event items, mode doesn't matter.

Plus if you want certain items (r7/15 etc) normal could be better for ya.

Also, you do realize TD with GD is counterproductive right?

  • Removed Throw Dirt based and replaced it with Whirlwind Attack

You know good point. I forgot about that. I have to head for work but I will give Whirlwind Attack, which goes well with Cyclone Axe.

Showtime gets it, I want to avoid using a hero, less micromanagement, faster run. Remember the idea is to farm event items.

If I want to do HM, I'll just leech.

Remember not everyone has the access to Paragon / PvE skills to do things HM.

Calling a skill 'gimped' is purely a matter of opinion. You say the skills I'm using are gimped, and yet using the build I can still manage to clear the mobs I'm aiming for in less then 1 minute. My fastest timed run was 47 seconds.

For 'gimped 'skills they sure are working as intended, and quickly! Thus the build works :P

You still miss out on golds, full cave and boss for the occasional elite tome but whatever I guess.

Well I think your missing the point of what I use this for. I need event items for titles.

By the way I do get Golds in NM too

Not nearly as much since you're farming ~1/2 the mobs in NM instead of HM...

1/2 the mobs? Think you need to count the number of raptors my friend. More like 1/3 of the mobs I'm missing, if that. I done all my HM stuff, so again this suits my and anyone else's needs.

The title clearly states what the build is tended for, so why the negativity? Don't like it, use something else. Simples.
