Default Whirling farmer help

I am running the standard whirling R/A build ( Shadow from , dwarven stability , whirling defense ) I have used this build on the mantids outside Nahpui ( necros and monks ) and killed them easily. However using the same build and technique with vaettirs I do no damage to them. They are both casters - am I missing something?

Whirling defense only deals damage with ranged attacks. Even though vaettirs are casters, they attack in melee, so WD does no damage.

Only a few foe types attacks differ from what you would think.
Mindblades in uw weirdly used to be melee even tho being casters but anet changed them to ranged to hinder farming of them in uw.
Cant figure out tho the logic behind vaetires being melee then again Razjar in factions is a caster but holds a sword.

Mist Vaettir use Illusionary Weapon. Spectral Vaettir are literally Mist Vaettir with a different skill set.
