If you ask me axe is better in most situations bc it has an unconditional deep wound. Sword always needs sever+gash and usaully final thrust+something else for damage. Axe needs two for deep wound and damage, eviscerate and executioners.

edit: spelling

Axes are for spiking, swords are for pressure. Not to say that either can't do the opposite or that there arn't exceptions, but they generally pan out to the aforementioned.

If you ask me, Sword is better because it has cooler sounds.

Quite seriously, it's Pie vs. Cake. Go with what tastes good!

No, just make a new thread and leave this one sitting here to rot when the discussion can still be continued, even 2 years later.

The mods lock new threads and redirect people to these old ones...then people like you come and say to lock the old ones just because they're old.

Make up your minds.

I like swords best...because they just feel better than axes. The wide range of damage in an axe is unappealing to me. I do have some axe builds and tend to use them in areas with alot of mobs(triple chop + cyclone axe ftw), but I always trend back to swords for most of my play time. I have 3 out of 4 of my weapon setups with swords, and 3 other swords in my inventory for different scenarios. Personal preference...swords.

Even if you are low on money, every warrior should have both, and also hammers.

You simply have a +1 swords and a +1 axes helmet.

Then you switch your helmets and weapons as needed.

Then you ideally have at least one physical (furious/sundering/zealous/ vampiric) weapon and one elemental (fiery/icy/ebon/shocking, I suggest fiery if you only have one) weapon.

General differences:

1. Axes can cause deep wound for 5 adrenaline (dismember) unconditionally
2. Swords require bleeding for Gash and have in general poor ways to inflict deep wounds
3. Axes have more area attacks like triple chop, cyclone axe. Works wonders in PvE with a zealous axe haft and also gains adrenaline like mad
4. Swords have dragon slash, which can put incredible pressure with "For Great Justice" on a target in PvE
5. Axes have more spike potential and potentially higher damage due to critical hits, but their damage is not constant as swords (6-28 vs 15-22)
6. Swords have with Riposte and Deadly Riposte skills in the tactics line that work great for farming, but so does Cyclone Axe

Axes and axe upgrades are in general cheaper to get. Just go to Wiki and search for "sword" and "axe" and pick the weapon line which has more pretty skins in your opinion.

I personally prefer the looks of most swords, but still mostly play with Axes. Triple Chop+Cyclone Axe+Whirlwind Attack, Dismember and Exec strike in PvE combined with splinter weapon cast by a ritualist is fun.

If its a sword warrior vs. axe warrior in a fight, then I would say that swords have the advantage because of riposte and deadly riposte. Add conditions like bleeding and deep wound on top of that and its hard to beat even though axes can do more damage. Throw in an interupt and and final thrust and its game over.

the way i see it swords are better for defence (ripostes and easy cripples)while axes are better for attack(PBAoE and easy dmg conditions). im sure there are alot of skills out there that would work as exceptions but this is just me trying to make a generalization.

Swords are, without a doubt, the strongest option for PvE.

Dragon Slash + "Save yourselves!" + Brawling Headbutt.

Whatever axes can do, it's nowhere near as great as making the party invincible.

I like Pie. And deep wound. And lots of damage.

So...

Axes > Swords.
Pie > Cake

Sword is better pressure and DPS with Dragon Slash. Not that great for spiking because it has an abominably crappy Deep Wound. Can snare with Crippling Slash.

Axe has better spikes with Eviscerate and Executioner's Strike. Auto-attack DPS is higher than Sword but you don't have a DPS machine like Dragon Slash to rape stuff in PvE.

Sword = PvE
Axe = PvP

There's some AoE options with Triple Chop/Cyclone Axe but IMO Dragon Slash/Whirling Attack is better.
