Default Tanking in GW

(forgive me if this is not the right forum. please move if it is not)

So, I was just wondering. Not even a year ago, It was pretty much a general consensus that Tanking in Guild Wars = Epic Fail

...So why has this changed all of a sudden?

Aside from solo farming, what would lead you to believe that tanking isn't bad?

because a lot more people talk about tanking in serious terms now, and the reason has eluded me.

Mainly because a warrior couldn't tank 50+ enemies throwing degen/conditions/ridiculous damage around.

A permasin can, and with nuking being much stronger (RoJ, CoP) than the old searing flames nukes, tank n' spank is seriously the strongest it's ever been.

Currently, and I hate to admit this, but a good permasin tank with enough cryers will easily beat out a balanced team with SY/TNTF and a lot of physicals. The damage from CoP is just absurd.

I think that Eles and rangers make better tanks then Warriors.

Tanking in PvE has been given to Permasins and 600/Smite teams now.

Tanking in PvP can only be done effectively with Warriors using [[Defy Pain]. By the way, you'd be stupid to even touch the idea of tanking in any serious PvP.

I'm interested in why you'd think that. The only builds I can think of that Eles and Rangers would use for tanking are for farming. Warriors also do farming through tanking, so I don't see how one of those would be better over the other.

Mr. Snow Bunny above me hit it right on the head. Back in the day (2-3 years ago) tanking really was crappy, a warrior (or ele) moved 50% slower than normal with OB flesh + the fact they still took physical damage meant for slow pulls that also factored in the chance of death. Not to mention the fact that by the time the nukers or necros started laying down the damage the aggro had already broken and everyone starts spamming skills all over the place fearing for their lives.

Nowadays...perma tanks run 20% faster than normal w/celerity and can negate most damage and any damage that gets through SF is usually negated by the bonds. Also, instead of seeing a bunch of eles spamming a skill w/ 1 sec cast time and 2 sec recharge, we now see a group of X/Me or Me/X using 1-2 skills and completely annihilating a group of 50+ enemies like a hot knife through butter.

As soon as you're able to lay down 1000+ dmg in a matter of a second with tank'n'spank, it doesn't seem so "omgub3rlamesauce" anymore.
