Default ADVICE, PLEASE. The kind of Ranger I want.

Well, I'm going to start Prophecies today. I love, love, love Rangers so there is my Primary.

Now I'm having a bit of a dilemma that I'm sure MANY Ranger primaries experience... THE SECONDARY PROFESSION.

This is the kind of Ranger I want:
The kind of Ranger I enjoy playing is... well, the Marksman Ranger. I like shooting things with my bow. And being good at it. This doesn't necessarily mean DAMAGE DAMAGE DAMAGE. I love doing all kind of things with my bow. I want to have a good relationship with my bow.

SO I'm thinking... well what secondary profession skills would help me in this quest? To do better with my bow?

So we have these combinations available:
Ranger/Warrior
Ranger/Necromancer
Ranger/Elementalist
Ranger/Mesmer
Ranger/Monk

Whichhhhhhhhh one gah this is so hard haha. I want to actually TAKE ADVANTAGE of my secondary while playing a Ranger. Yes yes some Rangers don't even use secondary. Well I think Secondary is what gives your ranger some FLAVOR! So yes. Wanna use secondary, as well.

OOOOOOOOO here's something. Since I'm like doing my thing and using my bow.... well what happens when I get surrounded? Some skills to aid me with that from my secondary... possibly????/?1?!?/!?!?1/1/

Ranger/Warrior: you get three more weapon options... don't believe I need this, because i like the bow. But maybe Tactics is like good or something?

Ranger/Necromancer: okay i need help with this. I like distance fighting. And I don't like touching you.

Ranger/Elementalist: NO EXPERIENCE HELP

Ranger/Monk: um...........meh bleh blah. help

Ranger/Mesmer: sounds boring...

SO YES. Some Advice would be much welcome in this oh soooooo important quest of mine to find a secondary I can love just as much as my primary.

Thank you.

/Mo for Mending Touch. Just because something is your secondary doesn't mean you have to spec into it and use it's skills for half your bar.

QFT.

And all you do for mending touch is throw your extra points into it anyway.

Epidemic on a ranger allows you to really spread your conditions, such as burning and poison or dazed and bleeding, or whatever combination you choose.

I'd go for Mesmer, but Monk is also a safe way (with less power in my opinion)

I would agree with /Mo. If you mostly want to use your bow, there's not a whole lot of point to using some other secondary. Using monk as a secondary will allow you to use a "hard" rez such as Rebirth and some form of self heal such as Mending Touch or Healing Breeze, without actually putting anything into monk attributes except some left-over points.

I have used every secondary with my ranger, and I must admit each has its strengths. Yet, the monk secondary is probably the way to go in the beginning. Warrior usually only works well in the sense of thumpers, the others tend to lean towards spell casting- which rangers don't perform too well at.

Mesmer skills like epidemic will help since they are non attribute affiliated and work well with condition spreading. I say go monk, and play with the rest later.

Get them all, and change your secondary to suit you build and not the other way around.

I was going to go Ranger/rit but seeing how ugly all the male faction rangers are, I went /paragon instead, I'll switch to RT later.

But on that note I would advise warrior, warriors offer tactics aside from more weapon attributes, which offers adrenaline based skills, as you shoot things with your bow, you will build up ample amounts of adrenaline. I'd say its kind of a waste not to make use of it wouldn't you?

You are a ranger so you still mainly rely on energy, but just 1 or 2 skills that can be useful with a low skill spec offer nice benefits, especially to a starting ranger that doesn't have a a lot of attribute points for expertise yet.

The majority of the time I run my Ranger bar without any secondary profession skills. Rarely I decide to put some in.

I normally go as a secondary Rit and bring skills such as Pure Was Li Ming. Might be a bit energy intensive but its a great skill which I dont trust my heros to use ^^ I would also sometimes bring a Hard res in the form of [skill=text]Flesh of my Flesh[/skill] or [skill=text]Death Pact Signet[/skill] this time I dont trust PUG's to res.

Although to be honest, imo, this was the post I could agree with the most in this thread...

A lot of people use Epidemic but to be honest I find it a bit mindless lol drop BA/BHA and stick in [skill=text]Magebane Shot[/skill] its a lot more fun ^^

Well I would disagree here. While using epidemic you have to aim at the right foes to spread the conditions on most of them so it's not a c-space build.

While Magebane is a pvp FOTM I don't see it good enough for pve. Do you really need an elite interrupt every 5 seconds? I guess that is a bit mindless since you will end up probably spamming it on recharge (especially in hard mode where mobs have half cast time). Good old d-shot / savage combo is enough for me to stop crucial skills and Gwen does a great job interrupting anything randomly (she's not a human, I tell ya).

Just my 2 cents.

All you do is aim for the one in the middle lol or closest to the most enemies. Not hard imo.

[skill=text]Magebane Shot[/skill]

If this attack hits, it interrupts target foe's action. If that action was a Spell, it is disabled for additional 10 seconds. This attack cannot be blocked.

Know what I mean?

Also please dont spam Interupts lol ^^

EDIT: Stupid out-of-date skills on these forums -_-

I didnt say epidemic is hard, I said it's not mindless.

ummmm I know what magebane is, I play TA most of the time. And I still think you don't need it in pve... waste of elite. What mobs you need to interrupt every 5 secs? Mobs die to fast to make it worth to disable their skills. d-shot is enough in most cases when you need to stop aegis or meteor shower. I rarely need to use savage when i miss d-shot or there is another skill i need to stop shortly after using d-shot.

And I din't say I spam interrupts, I just said that this skill encourages spamming and most of the people would prolly end up spamming it since there is not much skills to stop in pve really so why waste your elite doin nothing?

Stone Summit in Slavers

The reason I posted the skill description was not to remind you what the skill done, but rather to emphasize the fact that it cannot be blocked. It is the only Ranger Interrupt in the game that cannot be blocked. Now everyone's reaction to this is ALWAYS "nothing blocks in PvE anyway". This is complete and utter rubbish. I've been playing through EotN Dungeons recently on both NM and HM and im telling you now, lots of enemies have some form of block.

Yes prehaps the disable isnt that effective is some areas. But try Slavers even on NM with H/H against those massive 2 or 3 monk mobs with more res's than a GvG team, battles can last a while and Magebane comes in very handy when you need to not only interrupt but disable. DShot (no disrespect its a great skill) becomes very ineffective when you only have a 50% chance of hitting a foe with guardian.

So its far from a waste of an elite

I actually did Slavers on HM with a friend and 6 heroes, didnt need magebane (doesnt mean it's not good). As I said, just my opinion that keeping few mobs at 10 degen while still being able to interrupt crucial skills most of the time is best for me. Sure I adjust when I need to, or just change when I'm bored, but that is my fav pve setup.

I know magebane is an uber skill, actually it's too good, but I don't see how could you use it's full potential in pve.

Anyway, OP: try to use few builds and see what you like most.

Mesmer secondary can be a lot of fun, it has some nifty skills, like [wiki]Epidemic[/wiki] and [wiki]Frustration[/wiki] or the many, many mantra's.

Skill unlocking could be something to factor in, playing through Prophecies will unlock many important skills for both primary and secondary class. If you plan on getting heroes, they will have access to all skills you have unlocked.

Homogeneous groups of ele's, 1,2,3 and no meteor showers today and they may all keep their deep freeze and whatnot as well, thank you.
Granted, it's less useful against non-casters and called shot could deliver the poison unblocked, but then, with all the burning usually present bringing BA for it is not all that much of an addition. Depends on the area and the foes you're expecting the most trouble from.
