second profession is up to you, you can change it later on anyway.

As for attribute points, I usually base it off of what skills I have at the time, ie if I had skills on that uses blood magic and death magic, then I put put the points into those two (and if I have more skills or just prefer to use skills that use blood magic, I would put more into blood than death magic)

so it's more preference, specially at this early point in the game

As Stuart said, you can change secondary profession later on.
And you'll probably have an easier time if you go Death Magic (And then a MM (Minion Master) With animate skills)
Seeing as they're more asked for in groups (Ofcourse, it's up to you and you can change it freely whenever you want)

Yeah you can change your secondary to whatever profession you want....after you have reached level 20, ascended and (if you're in the original game) after you complete a quest to gain that profession. So it's gonna be your only secondary for a while. While Ranger might be seem fun at first....you may want to put a bit more thought into it first...you may still go with it but at least you won't be thinking you can change it when you get to LA or Maguuma.

As for attribute points...well it is best to place as many as possible into the magic line you are using the most of in your current build. Fortunately you don't have to worry about earning enough refund points to change it if you change your build like some of us old timers did way back in the day.

As an example....if most of the skills in your bar are Blood magic but maybe you have a couple of Death or Curses based skills ....then get Blood as high as you can followed by Death or Curses.

Soul Reaping is your primary attribute and while it does give you one point of energy for every point into it when something dies....unless you run only one line of magic skills and don't use your secondary....you wont have enough points to make it worth while. This will change later.

Basically my best advice right now is to just have fun playing a necromancer. Your level right now is not going to give you many points to play with anyway so it is mostly about learning how best to play your profession. In another three to five levels things start to change and your attribute point distribution will start to matter. That is when you will really need to begin to focus on specific builds that allocate points in one way or another and you will no longer be able to just spread them across all of your attributes.

1. At level 5, don't worry about your build. Honestly, nothing "good" is available to you yet. Just focus on learning how to play the game right now. When you reach level 20, with the two 15 att point quests done, and max armor, then it's time to worry about your build.

2. Later on you will be able to change your secondary profession. For the time being, monk is an excellent secondary because it allows you to bring a reusable resurrection skill.

3. Put your attribute points wherever they boost your skills.

Mesmer and Monk are the best secondaries for Necros. Rits are fine too, but /Me and /Mo are the best, hands down.

For now, focus on and/or Magic. Curses aren't effective until later on in the game.

Why is monk the best? But imo, n/rt or n/a would be the best. Assassin's promise or n/rt healers are useful.

Monks offer [Heal Area] and [Dwayna's Sorrow]. If you're MMing with human monks, I assure you they get tired of having to heal you. Dwayna's is also for MM or MBing, but it's often left for heroes. /Mo also offers a hard rez.

I forgot about /A lol. Yes, it's very good with the Curses line. Moloch posted a few good builds utilizing AP.

N/Rt healers are for Heroes imo. It's fine for humans, but it's clunky with H/H cuz of targeting issues, and Monks are just more versatile because of Protection Prayers.

Telling people who are level 5 to choose /A for secondary for a N is inviting them to commit suicide. There are only a select few skills from the A line that are good for a Curses necromancer, all of those effective at a very modest spec. Those can be capped and added later. But tell him to run /A and in a couple days you'll have him shadow stepping with daggers into enemy mobs...

True true.

I really only see AP being a viable skill. Should have written that.
