Default Whats the benefit of Primary Necro?

Honest question.

I've been taking a look over all the classes recently, as I just hit the end with my Ranger, and was planning on playing through again, and one of the classes I was looking at playing was the Necromancer. However, I can't seem to find a good reason to actually Primary one, I can see plenty of reasons to Secondary one, and I see that many of their skills are actually pretty cool, and it will be fun trying to figure out interesting specs with them, but as a Primary?

I think my main problem is Soul Reaping, and the skills it affects, while it sounds nice on paper, it doesn't actually do anything unless I put a considerable amount of points into it, and even then, requires someone to die near me, which if I'm playing alone, and sometimes even when playing with a team is not a certain thing, when you add in that very few of the skills it affects are even useful in most situations, and those that are would require a decent amount of points into Soul Reaping, and eh...

So am I just missing something here? I mean, why not just go Ele, and put a bunch of points into Energy Storage, then use one of the skills in that which helps reduce Energy Costs, or go Ranger Primary, and max out Expertise, and have everything you cost be super low costwise? Heck, you could probably even go Assassin and make a decent amount of Energy.

In PvE, Soul Reaping gives you unlimited energy in virtually every situation. You can spam your skills more often, with less consequence, than pretty much every other class/build (only prominent exception would probably be ER). Mix in the armor ignoring power of the Curses line and Death line, and you have an extremely powerful, borderline overpowered class.

"near" is double aggro range, that's not a difficult thing to pull off in pve. Factor in that minions also trigger soul reaping and you'll be bathing in energy without spending a single skill slot on it.

It's not very impressive until you start getting near 20 and have atts to spare, plus large number of mobs dying in 8 player areas... then it's just disgusting.

it's the best energy primary in game, you'll rarely if ever have to deal with energy as long as you have minimal energy management. You can do quite alot of things with a necro primary, give it a go and have fun

Necromancer is easily one of the best primaries for PvE. The only two that come close in terms of viability/usefulness in PvE would be Paragon and Assassin.

its so OP ANet should nerf it .

Am kidding about the nerf part xD but i'm serious about it being overpowered . it's like the only class which can spam energy spells with no energy problems as long as things (everything except spirits) die

Soul Reaping got one solid use is for summoning minions. When they die They give energy back to you.So if you are main Necro you got the privileged of making an army.Aside from the Ritualist spirits those are on steriod a couple update ago.

Soul reaping is one of the best primary attributes there is for energy managment. It has already been "nerfed" before you would get energy equiverlent (spelling?) to the points you put into soul reaping EVERY time a foe died. Now I think it's every 15 seconds soulreaping will be triggered 3 times by a foe being killed. Which is still really good.

Aside from Soul Reaping, Necros are an incredibly versatile class. Aside from minions (and let's admit, travelling with a small army is fun) there are curses which can devastate enemies.

I don't think they're overpowered. I just think they got the necros RIGHT.

a trivia - ghost-in-a-box triggers sr as well.
sr is overpowered, but compared only to other primairy attributes. i think that, for the sake of gameplay, sr is good while other primairies are faulty and underpowered, especially mesmer's in general pve.

I think the TS should read the sticky. It's old but it explains at least this.

Made properly = can play with any class's skills better than that class itself can because they don't need to worry about energy? How is that a good thing?

1. Soul Reaping, even after lots of nerfs, remains the second-best way of gaining lots of energy. It can handle an energy load that most other classes can't.

2. The Curse line probably has the best assortment of good skills for any single skill line in GW (for PvE purposes).

3. Death has minions, and you have to love those.

4. Blood, while it sucks pretty badly overall, has Orders, which can be important in designing team builds.

Soul Reaping is broken hence is one reason why necros are so loved in PvE.

They nerfed it before and even now: still broken.
