On topic: There isn't anything wrong with Spiteful Spirit, especially in Hard Mode where foes attack faster.

I think with the recent changes to HM armor that Icy Veins is probably going to give you more bang for your buck. I like Icy Veins because since it is in Soul Reaping, you can max out any other attribute just fine opening your bar up to whatever you want.

SS is ok, just somewhat unimpressive.

Discord is crap. SV is... spoil victor? Damn that isn't even mildly useful unless you are 55ing. Icy Veins is OK if you like to use Deathly Swarm but want to make it harder on yourself.

Take AP/Curse and go balls out like a pro.

Is there really nothing better than the AP/Curse? I've been running the AP Mark of Pain nuker build for the longest time and I've been experimenting with SS and SV but haven't really tried Discord on the player.

SS works just fine... as does SV, AP, IV, Discord, MMing... hell, just about anything will work just fine. Winning PvE is more about aggro, flagging, and targeting tactics than it is buildwars.

^ This, pretty much. Some people still stand by SS in HM because it's so easy to abuse monster AI. It's viewed as unfavourable because there are faster ways to get kills. AP-MoP+derv heroes, for example, it's just for those who prefer to play defensive.

It depends on what your after in sense of damage.
SS is more aoe type dmg and usually used on melee foes who you try and ball up unless its a specific farm.SV is more 55 build skill as its dmg(lifesteal) is single target and only works till target reaches the hp of attackers target - hence mainly used by 55hp builds.

Wait, is Icy Veins actually viable? Oo Heard it was and saw forum posts about it but it seems so lackluster when compared to any other builds. Why not just go elementalist and blast people with more damage if necros go icy veins?

SS is for defensive teams, because you'll deliberately let mobs attack you to get it trigger.

Generally is much faster to unbalance the builds on attack, and take down mobs w/o let you hit the team: thus SS lose most of the appeal.

I still use SS, it gives a lot of satisfaction in areas where foes are in big groups, tend to ball and have enough life for your skill not to be wasted (2 secs cast is a bit too much if the target dies the second after...), I have much fun with it in areas like DoA and FoW...but for the rest it's not so worth it, I often end up using the rest of the bar and not SS in normal/easy areas cause it seems too much cast time for little effect if prev conditions are not met. I still use it as that necro of mine must be curses and can't find anything better from that line...
Probably Ice Veins or something is better in normal play, yeah. In fact I use it on my other necro...

I wonder if you can arcane echo icy veins and then spam it on different mobs and then when one dies a chain reaction occurs

The problem is that Icy Veins just does (relatively) poor damage even if it triggered instantly. Compare Icy Veins (elite) to Liquid Flame (non-elite). Notice that non-elite ele nuke skills do better than IV, which is pretty pathetic because ele nukers are on the whole fairly pathetic.

Anyone even considering using IV should take Deathly Swarm because its better for almost all conceivable instances.
