i've been using IW as my elite ever since i got it. never 55'ed, i will post up my current build when i get my home pc going. glad to see some posts on it since it seems to be a taboo skill.

Thanks already, that would be really nice. Yeah I just love to be cast and use melee attacks aswell.

It's not that it's a taboo skill (although it is to some degree

), it's that you can put yourself to better use with something else. Generally, and notice that I said generally, a mesmer's piddly 60AL isn't enough to justify using it when all you get is 42 dmg per hit. That is nice and all, but a warrior can out damage that in a heartbeat, in most situations, and a warrior can have significantly more armor while doing so. Just yesterday I was hitting for 70+ on that warrior Jotun boss outside Siifhalla (using that 4a skill that boosts for signets). You will generally put an unnecessary burden on your monk while using it since you have to be in melee range to use it.

I'm all for using it, and trying to find good uses for it, I'm just pointing out that you'll likely find resistance from teams that you join if they know you have it (as in, they'll likely boot you before the mission/quest starts or they'll flame you if they see you using it).

It is one of the below average Mesmer builds...
Mesmers are below average overall in PvE

So that makes this skill/build below below average.

Can someone please explain how IW is the "Dark side of the Mesmer" Domination fits the bill more since that's where the real power is baby. No?

I ran this IW build in RA as a test this weekend and really had some fun. Killed a lot of people and did not die as fast as other setups I have tried in the past. Give it a try. Not great but what is with IW. Dark Escape is awesome when you have IW up. so is Feigned Neutrality (just attack while it is used and don’t use another skill till it is done)

P.S. the new vipers as a spell is good fun

Isn't illusionary weaponry good in that, other than bypassing any sort of block/ blind status, it is completely armor-ignoring?

Yeah it's chaos dmg so it's armor ignoring. But it's still not that great.

You mean untyped damage. No skill causes chaos damage.

I might try and find a IW build for my mesmer to use...maybe mixed in with some of the GWEN PVE only skills I will find something somewhat effective...yah I'm not holding my breath, but still might be fun.

It is good for pressure but it is hard to kill (example monks). You can not combine with attack skills since you do not actually hit. So it fails for spikes. It could see an increase in damage (but I would only like it to be on attributes of 13 14 15 16) So mesmers would see it only.

It would not hurt to add a 10-20% chance to deflect melee.

IW is more of a gimmick skill and as others have said, the ability to counter it is pretty easy. I can only remember one farming build that used it, and I think that one needed a scythe to get the most out of it.

It was scythe based, for mulitple enemy hits. But it was nerfed when Earth magic was changed. Don't remember what exactly, but pretty sure it doesn't work anymore.

Seems like it would since you're inflicting damage, you're just not attacking. I think skills that work while you're not attacking (i.e. Signet of Stamina) will not be affected since you're not attacking. Feel free to correct me as I may be wrong. I'll do some more research though just to make sure.

Guild wiki says this : Anomaly! This skill's description says your attacks deal no damage in melee; instead, they do not hit. These do not trigger effects based on hitting the target or effects based on failing to hit.

So that leads me to think that, since the foe isn't getting hit, Pacifism and Binding Chains should work just fine. Neat idea, by the way.

I will have to unlock Binding Chains on my Mesmer and Whack A Way while my finger is on the Disrupt button waiting for the heal skill that should be showing up… if it does work like this what a gimmick.
