A lot of people will say VoR and Empathy are bad in PvE because they only do damage after a mob has attacked you or used a skill. In PvP they can have a shut down effect, cause someone to pause for a second, or force a monk to remove a hex... that said mob AI isn't that great overall for those tactics to work.

It's generally thought that shutdown is preferable to punishment.

BTW, you can also enclose skill tags [like this] in order for their icons [Empathy] to show up.

The big question is what do you want to do?
Do you like playing this build and would like minor modifications (if any)?
If this is the case - the build is fine and dandy. You have damage in there - so it should work in PvE.

You prefer something more effective?
In which case - AP CoP.

1 [cry of pain] isn't nearly as effective as a whole bunch.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why is it armour-ignoring?

Because it is. When skills say inflicts <insert number> damage then its usually armor ignoring,
metoer shower = fire damage, not armor ignoring
ice spikes = water damage, not armor ignoring

Cry of Pain = Damage = armor ignoring.

Theres quite a few PVE only skills that are armor ignoring and very few non pve skills, such as that earth magick skill i cannot quite remember right now, but costs 5 energy, causes exaustion, got shortish recharge, and is armor ignoring.

Song, CoP is one of the few AoE damage spells mesmers have. Ease up on it a little.

ss is very different in pve because ss triggers on attacks, which foes do more often in pve since they don't have a full skill bar, and also don't spam skills.

Punishment is fine and has its place but its not the best way, and really shouldnt be used as the main/only form of damage

Controling the rate of damage is better than letting the mobs control the rate of damage they take.

Example, Ap+mop or Ap+cop let YOU and your party control the damage were as SS and VOR lets the MOBS control the rate of damage they take due to only taking the damage when they attack/use skills..even if they do retardedly spam thru them.

Id take The control thanks :P

Having said that, punishment Is fine if you already have enough Brute force controlled damage, mitigation(weakness/blinds ect) and backline.

The problem with DF is that it kinda should be one of your opening moves.
As you aggro - you DF the melee and prevent them from reaching you. But since it's used as e-management - I can see why you feel it feels a bit useless.

Personally - I'd look into Assassin's Promise.
It simply is the best mesmer elite.

Throw out [Energy Burn] and replace it with [Arcane Echo] and I would drop [Backfire] and put [Auspicious Incantation] or [Ether Signet] for godly e-management. Put some quick recharging cover hex like [Mind Wrack] instead of [empathy] and you got a damage machine.

here's what works extremely well for me

visions of regret
empathy
backfire
cry of pain
cry of frustration
power drain(far superior energy management)
a hex removal skill.. i think its inspired hex?
rez sig/hard rez of choice

pretty much as a mesmer ur not doing crazy crazy individual damage(CoP can be crazy on balled foes tho)
so ya u engage foes hex stuff up(empathy can be pretty much put on anything because all enemies are constantly wanding cuz they're stupid) power drain's ur emanagement, and it helps to relive pressure off the team by interupting those ele nuke skills. Cry of frustration is ur skill to rupt absolutely anything. inspired hex is to remove hexes...rez is to rez.

very straight foward and a pretty fun mesmer bar to run. just remember to be constantly switching targets when u hex and try to cast vor on balled foes.
