How did I already use up slots for a game I don't even have yet?

Its an expansion if you merge. You already played the game you're adding an expansion to.

Uh, no. It can't be a stand alone for some customers and an expansion for others. It is the same price for everyone.

The players who have factions alone will not have the same amount of content as those who have it merged.

See the animation for Type 2: Factions only.

If you do not understand the concept, please stay on this thread.

If you understand it, but want to argue about it, this isnt the proper thread. You can argue here:

And you can't have a "MMO"RPG up 24/7 without charging a monthly fee, right?

Nice job on the animation, Lyra. I understood it well berfore I saw this, but It'll hopefully clarify things for others.

I like the idea of 6x100% rather than 8X50%.

Unfortunately for me I am liking the idea of 12X100% even more. But since I want to have more available combinations, 2 additional slots won't be enough for me. Looks like I'll be buying one more prophecies account and 2 Factions accounts.

That doesnt explain why i should see my linked factions account (which will cost the same as a stand alone) as an expansion when it only nets me 2 slots.

Lets try and make it even simpler

GW:Prophecies takes place in (currently) 1/2 of the Guild Wars world.
GW:Factions takes place in (currently) 1/2 of the Guild Wars world.

If you have a stand-alone Prophecies account you have 4 slots to use for the 6 professions that can experience 1/2 of the total content.

If you have a stand-alone Factions account you have 4 slots to use for the 8 professions that can experience 1/2 of the total content.

Now the real killer - if you merge your accounts you have 6 slots for 8 professions to experience 100% of the content.

The question I asked myself was; do I want to keep my current characters stuck in Tyria, where I have already experienced all that the game has to offer, and have my new characters limited only to Cantha?

Or would I prefer to take my cherished lvl 20's on a nice cruise over the water to slaughter some different creatures, on different maps, with different team-mates, professions, rewards, armour, weapons etc. And at the same time allow my new character classes to travel back to Tyria to experience the missions/quests/areas that I know well, to prolong the playability of the game?

The other argument that I could put forward is that when you purchased your GW:Prophecies account, you received 4 slots for 6 professions - you had to choose which 4 of the 6 primaries to use, and yet you still bought it and probably never even thought about not having enough slots to role all primaries. Why then should you expect to get 8 slots for 8 professions with the Factions account?

Just my 2cents

I totally understand what you are saying gragman. I want to take my Ranger into Cantha to get a new pet. I will be linking my accounts. I understand that My three current level 20 characters will be able to cross the seas, and experience a brand new continent. But I only get to make 2 Canthan characters if i still want to keep a pvp slot open.

Everyone keeps saying that if i have Prophesies, I have 4 slots with access to 50% of guild wars. and if i have Factions, seperately I have 4 slots with access to 50% of guild wars, However if i have a linked account I have those 4 slots with access to 100% of guild wars, and a bonus 2 slots. Well that is all fine, and good and well, but those 4 slots from factions are empty now, When I link my account those factions slots are "merged" with my current slots.
I understand that you are trying to rationalize the fuzzy math, but linking still nets us 2 fewer slots. That is fine, I have come to terms with that, I will be buying factions, and linking. I planned to from the beginning.
Thanks for being patient with me.

it's nowhere fuzzy, it's just narrowminded people not understanding it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to seem narrowminded. I am not in the least, I have a very open mind.

This threed is a link to a nice graphic view on how accounts are handled.

Not if it's right or not.. please see other threads for discussion lyra_song keep pointing out and I still find people that don't understand how merge vs non-merge works (independent on how they feel about the situation).

Just as a side note, everyone should be glad that they got 2 extra slots. Anet was planning on only giving one originally.

How much more does it cost for ANet to just give the mergered accounts the full 8 slots? Apparently too much...

6 slots is enough for me, though I question the justification they made from a business perspective.
