Ive posted problems such as this on many forums, but as many know, a CPU clocked at 1.67Ghz(2200) runs dramatically slower than a CPU at 2.08Ghz(2800). If i put my FSB at 133 or higher, when i run my computer for a couple of hours, my computer crashes, no matter what. Most of the time, i have to pop out the battery and put it back in. I keep my computer very cool, also keep dust out of everything. I should be at home to post this because i think its mobo related as well... My mobo is an ABIT, not sure the exact model atm.
I play HL2, and my average FPS used to be about 60-90, and now its about 30-60. It even effects WoW a lot more (a 40 fps drop on average) Im almost sure this will effect Guild Wars even more.. Should i just buy a whole new processor, or are there any possible tips i could get?

Unless you have the required cooling systems, overcloaking will overheat your processor. Overcloaking is bad, that's all you need to know. It shortens the life of your processor and might even fry your Mobo if used incorrectly. Just leave everything on your default settings and do not touch it again

Their is a mobo bios update. Which should fix the problem. Also you may have your cpu cooler mounted badly. And check your ram sticks. Are they paired.?

Pls. give more info about your settings if you want a better answer.

what are your actual measured processor temps?

what are you using to cool it make and model of hearsink and fan

are you using arctic silver or some heat transfer pad

have you actually checked the contact pattern on the heatsink/cpu

AS ABOVE

if what you did is not working set it back to default
i am running GW at top quality with a 2100+ (stock speed) and having no problems at all (6600GT card) i gig corsair dual

the 2200+ should do as well

my 2500 barton is going into another mb tomorrow

things are fast enough that i value the warranty more than a few FPS which i dont need as what i have works

From what the bios says, my temps are all fine EVEN when its clocked at its supposed speed, The computer runs fine all until a few hours, then it crashes. As i said, i have it completely cool. The fan (i use a fan) is on right, ram is paired (duel 512 mb 3200). I may need a bios update, not sure, ill give more information when im at that actual computer.

Take a temp reading after a crash and see what it says. You have to do a fast restart though for it to be close.

The AMD 2800 XP Barton is clocked at 2,08 GHz and has a FSB of 166 MHz also called as 333 MHz DDR.

Do I understand it right, that you have to UNDERclock that CPU to have it run?

If that is so then there are the usual suspects as unstable power supply, RAM problems, overheating. But if your mainboard is about 1-2 years old then you should check the capacitors on your MB. Any of them are bulged out or lost some electrolyte? In this case - get a new MB.

is your 2200 CPU OVERclocked to 2800
or
is your 2800 CPU UNDERclocked to 2200?

If you have overclocked to 2800 and it's not stable then it sounds like you've simply overclocked too much

If it's underclocked and you've *never* been able to run it at 2800 then you probably just need to update your BIOS.

sorry, i should have clarified, yeah, its a 2800 which can only run at 2200, going to try a bios update guys, and check my power supply and what not.

oh and i CAN run it at 2800, but it will crash after a couple of hours. Ive read on other forums tho that the 2800 does usually have lots of problems with clockspeeds.

one very important thing which was not mentioned

was this a retail box with included heatsink

or an oem box with processor only?

you might have gotten an overclocked 2200+ sold as a 2800+ after being overclocked if oem box

the reason AMD started laser locking the bridges not long ago was that so many trays were being diverted for this fraud they had to start locking their speeds

many of the relabeled overclocked cpus were giving trouble and amd was catching flack on it

the retail has 3 year warranty and if it is not working you might check on an RMA for it

It was infact OEM... you may be right about this, i dont quite remember fully, but i remember there was something weird about my chip. I think it did say something like 2200 on the side of it, i thought it was just a misprint or something like that... hmmm, it seems now im just going to have to wait until this summer when i get an amd 64, thanks for all of your input everyone, it really helped me out.

good news and bad new there

you have an unlocked chip and while it may not stand up to 2800+ you might get by clocking at 2400+ or even 2600+

i also have a 2100+ which runs GW fine so while you might not run at 1600 and 4x aa you still have a very good view with alnost no lag except connection

6800 and only 2xaa? you are joking

my 6600GT does 4xaa without a sweat

go and adjust for highest quality with 4aa and try it

fps fine to your eye dont worry what the fps number is just sit back and enjoy it

AMD has always had problems with confusing 'speed' ratings. A 2000 is in reality a 1.67 etc. etc. Dollar for dollar, if you get the right chip, if unlocked, they are a great bargin if you control the heat problems because they, unlike most Intel's, can be overclocked. But if you make a mistake, or your cooling is inadequate, goodbye cpu.

Because of the dramatically declining dollar in the past year, bargins are hard to come by now. I was bulk buying (lot of 12) 2000's and 2200's a year ago for under $50 each and single lots for $65, they are now about $85 in single lots. Same goes for memory, it's getting harder to get what you want without spending a lot of money.
