I have reinstalled my Apogee overclocking utility. This thing, I really only use for it's temperature readout on my 6-in-1 card reader/temperature display. My question about what the program displays while it is running.

Everything makes sense except for the FSB MHz. Mine is reading 203 right now. This is the default setup. My processor has a FSB speed of 800MHz. Is it possible that this utility has slowed my FSB? Or that my FSB is somehow setup to be underclocked? The overall CPU speed display is 2436, so I would think that my 2.4GHz is running where it should be.

Does anyone have any experiance or ideas on this?

Or does anyone know what a safe speed to overclock a NVidia GeForce 5200 is?

first that 800mhz is the EFFECTIVE speed in that it is really 200 quad pumped (4 operations/clock same as ddr ram is 2/clock)

if you value your warranty i would not think of oc one of those

what little you would gain would not be worth it

if you must

do it like i do

go up 1 percent at a time and use it for a bit on benchmarks looking for artifacts (white or off color specs or prismatic rainbow etc)

see those back off fast

my overclocking was done in the days of the original doom when going from 12 fps to 15 fps was worthwile

The processor speed, regardless of how fast its' own capabilities are, can only run at the maximum speed of your motherboard, it is possible your motherboard is configured slower than its' own maximum (jumpers maybe?) The utility wouldn't underclock your bus though, on the overclocking of the geforce though, I'm not sure, I would suggest looking it up online,

:edit: alot of places have an overclock or overdrive feature for the cards that will safely overclock your graphics. Much like ATI's catalyst control center overdrive.

Thanks, Lovitar, I thought that might be the case about the FSB. It seemed weird to be so off.

Jeanette, my motherboard is configured for 800MHz, they just failed to mention that it was a multiplied effect, so.....

Thank's for the help, I will just leave everything where it is since I never have processor lag and run GW better than I would ever hope.

I wish you guys were here to over clock my computer correctly. I'm a little scared to attempt any radical overclocking. I only did a little measle overclocking on my video card through the software overclocking thingamajigger.

If you guys come over to help me fix it I'll give you guys coconut soda drinks as rewards

todays pcs are fast enough that even a 10 per cent overclock will not make that much practical improvement and 10 % is the recommended maximum

unless you get lucky and have a gpu at the high end of tollerance which will go wild

you might have one at the low end which will not overclock at all (it just squeeked by testing)

hmmm yeah that does seem like a possibility. I hardly notice much change in my video card performance, but then again thats because my cpu and such are still the same.

Overclocking is one of the predominant reasons we get pinged for customer or technical support. As Loviatar said, you don't gain that much, but you really press a system that is working hard to try to work even harder. What does that get you? Heat! And for a game as graphically complex as Guild Wars, heat is always a reality. Increase heat, you're more likely to see random crashes and mysterious glitches of all kinds.

I spent about 6 months with the case cover off and a fan blowing cold air onto the chassis; it was the only way I was able to stop the every-few-minute crashes during the StarCraft beta and the first few months after the game came out. So I'm ultra sensitive to issues of computer heat, and would strongly urge you to just pop for a new processor if you have to have more power, and forget the measly 10% boost that comes an potentially great cost!

Hehe Gaile you haven't seen the insane people I know at www.vr-zone.com.sg then.

They could push 3.2ghz processors to 4.2ghz with a weird cooling system of an air-conditioning compressor from a car rigged to the PC with cold air being blasted to both the CPU and the GPU, and they fool around with LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen).

Need for Speed Underground was playing like Mach One.

I've overclocked every PC of mine that has gone past his/her age. I'm not disagreeing with Gaile but merely offering the other side. OC is a way to gain performance (and on some older systems that don't immediately run so hot, you could gain closer to 50% w/ a good HS/Fan and cooling), as long as your willing to take that risk. If your planning on getting a new computer for instance... why not? Especially those with money to spend, it's your computer, have at it, but don't complain when you knew fully well that there were consequences. , boy was I young then (I thought that was the coolest name ever). Did you also participate in the tourney against South Korea? I don't remember a Gaile Gray, maybe your alias changed

as mine has. Anyways I had my 300Mhz Cyrix OC'ed to about 375MHz which is a 25% performance increase.
